  51.         This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  52.         Microsoft Windows 95.
  53.  
  54.     The drivers support 256, 32768 and 16 Million colors in all
  55.     resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.

  113. 3.      Installation
  114.  
  115.     This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  116.         Display Driver for Windows 95.
  117.  
  118.         To install the drivers, start the program SETUP.EXE in this
  119.         directory. The installation assistant will help you to install
  120.         the driver with the control panel.
  121.  
  122. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  123.  
  124.     - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  125.       older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  126.     - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  127.       Information Database.
  128.     - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.

  131. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  132.  
  133.     First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  134.     WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  135.     install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  136.  
  137.     The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  138.     the Windows desktop.
  139.  
  140.     - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  141.       mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  142.     - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  143.     - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  144.       Display Type" will pop up.
  145.     - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  146.       You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  147.     - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and change to
  148.           the WIN95 directory on the ELSAware CD for your WINNER board.
  149.         - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  150.           and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  151.     - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  152.       "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  153.         - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  154.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  155.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  156.           driver.
  157.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  158.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  159.           you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  160.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  161.           Boards.
  162.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  163.           now".
  164.  
  165.     Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  166.     now".
  167.  
  168.     In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  169.     without rebooting your system.

  238. 5.      Release notes
  239.  
  240. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  241.  
  242.     The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  243.     file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  244.     mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  245.     distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  246.  
  247.     The following table shows the meaning of this entries:

  249.     Section [Settings]
  250.  
  251.     CursorFG/CursorBK
  252.         ColorCursor
  253.  
  254.         With this two entries you can change the color of the
  255.         hardware cursor. The format is:
  256.             CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  257.         at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  258.                 the range 00 to FF of the base color components.
  259.                 You must specify ColorCursor=1 to make this working!
  260.  
  261.     RefreshRate
  262.                 no longer supported!
  263.  
  264.         TI-Snow
  265.                 Set this value to 1, if the screen flickers around the
  266.                 cursor shape while changing the pattern.
  267.                 This switch works only on WINNER 2000PRO/X, -AVI and
  268.                 GLoria.
  269.  
  270.         Format555
  271.                 Set this value to 1 to force the 5-5-5 color format in
  272.                 16BPP modes.

  275.     Section [Hardware]
  276.  
  277.     CursorType
  278.  
  279.         In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  280.         graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  281.         this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  282.         by inserting the line
  283.             CursorType=SW
  284.         in your ELSA.INI file.
  285.         This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  286.  
  287.     Video-RAM base address and size
  288.  
  289.         Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  290.         your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  291.         segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  292.         On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  293.         into the host address space. This increases the
  294.         performance of multimedia applications.
  295.         For example, insert the line
  296.             VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  297.         to map the video RAM at the physical address
  298.         A00000000h.
  299.         Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  300.         main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  301.         size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  302.         graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  303.         your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  304.         PCI 4GB.
  305.         If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  306.         VRAM-Size entry:
  307.           for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  308.               WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  309.             VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  310.           and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  311.           the size of the video memory in bytes.

  313.  
  314. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  315.  
  316. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  317.  
  318.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  319.     hints on work arounds.
  320.  
  321.  
  322. 6.1     Videomode not available
  323.  
  324.     Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  325.     display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  326.     indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  327.     a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  328.     notification message.
  329.  
  330.  
  331. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  332.  
  333.         On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  334.         32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  335.         very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.

  338. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  339.  
  340.     Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  341.     a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  342.     cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  343.  
  344.     - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  345.       driver for Windows 95.
  346.     - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  347.       In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  348.       Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  349.       resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  350.  
  351.     or:
  352.     - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  353.       the mouse track.
  354.  
  355.     Hints:
  356.     When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  357.         board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  358.         active.
  359.     With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  360.     drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  361.     the entry "ELSA GmbH Aachen (Germany)".

  363.  
  364. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  365.  
  366.     This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  367.     868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  368.     only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  369.     in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  370.         VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  371.         VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  372.  
  373.  
  374. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  375.  
  376.         Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  377.         (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  378.         switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  379.         color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  380.         "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".
  381.  
  382. 6.6.    Unknown and PnP-monitors
  383.  
  384.         If you don't have selected a Monitor or you have a PnP (DDC1)
  385.         Monitor, in all graphics modes the default refresh rate is
  386.         60Hz. The DDC case is becaus a bug in Windows DDC support
  387.         You can change to a higher refresh rate with the program
  388.         WINman. WINman, unlike Windows, can evaluate the monitor
  389.         information provaided by DDC exact.
  390.  
  391. 6.7.    Cursor corruption
  392.  
  393.         If you see some "snow" araound the cursor shape while changing
  394.         the pattern, insert the line
  395.                 TI-Snow=1
  396.         in the section [Settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
  397.         ! This fix slows down the performance of the cursor changing
  398.         ! operations !
