  36. 1.      Overview
  37.  
  38.     This disk (or CD-ROM subdirectory) contains the ELSAmotion 
  39.     Windows driver and the setup utility for installation.
  40.  
  41.     The Windows driver enables the ELSAmotion to be used as an
  42.     MCI-device by Windows Media-Player and alikes. It can be 
  43.     used to view MPEG films under all graphics modes your graphics 
  44.     card supports. MPEG films may be taken from CD-ROM, VideoCD or
  45.     CD-i (CD-interactive) devices. Playback may be done with up to 
  46.     30 frames per second from iconic size to full screen (depending 
  47.     on your graphics board). For this, a DCI-/DirectDraw- supporting 
  48.         graphics board is required (e.g. ELSA WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  49.     WINNER 2000PRO/X..).
  50.  
  51.     SETUP is an installation program for the installation and 
  52.     configuration of the ELSAmotion Windows driver.

  57. 2.      Disk contents
  58.  
  59.     It is not sufficient to copy the files from the disk (or 
  60.     directory) to your harddisk, because there are some changes 
  61.     required in your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI, too.
  62.

  105.     In case of trouble during or after installation, please make
  106.     sure you have all the files mentioned above!

  111. 3.1     Installation Windows 3.1x
  112.  
  113.     Prior to installation of ELSAmotion, an DCI-capable graphics
  114.     board (and its drivers) as well as Video for Windows 1.1d (or
  115.     newer) from the ELSA CD have to be installed. ELSAmotion has to 
  116.     be inserted into a PCI-slot that is capable of running as a 
  117.     "PCI-BUSMASTER" (see documentation of your PC).
  118.  
  119.     You can install the ELSAmotion Windows driver with the 
  120.     program SETUP.EXE on this disk "ELSAmotion Driver for 
  121.     Windows 3.1x" or on CD ROM in the subdirectory labeled 
  122.     "MOTION".
  123.  
  124.     Start Windows, call in the "Program Manager" "File"/"Run ...",
  125.     enter the commandline "a:setup" (or the appropiate directory 
  126.     if you install from the ELSA-CD) and confirm with "OK".
  127.     SETUP asks for your language, installs the ELSAmotion Windows
  128.     driver and modifies your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files
  129.     accordingly. If asked, please insert the disc labeled "MPEGtest"
  130.         into your disc-drive.
  131.

  133. 3.2     Installation Windows 95
  134.  
  135.     You may install ELSAmotion for Windows 95 as you do with
  136.         Windows 3.1x. If you insert ELSAmotion for the first time
  137.         into your computer, you are asked to use the Windows 95
  138.         standard installation path, which is also possible. 
  139.     
  140.         Fullscreen replay is only possible with DirectDraw and offscreen 
  141.         memory. Also, there may be a need to install DirectX (Direct Draw, 
  142.         Direct Sound, Direct Play) to your system. If you use Setup, you 
  143.         will be prompted to install DirectX if it hasn't been before. If 
  144.         you used Windows 95 procedures for ELSAmotion installation, you 
  145.         won't see ELSAmotion drivers in the "Devices" of Media Player.
  146.         Direct Draw resides on an extra disc (labelled "DirectX") or in  
  147.         the directory "\ELSAWARE\DDRAW" on CD Versions. To install 
  148.         DirectX, change to the subdirectory "DirectX" and start the 
  149.         program "Dxsetup.exe". 
  150.         CAUTION:
  151.         after installation of DirectX from CD, you will have to 
  152.         reactivate your WINNER driver if you own a ELSA Graphics Card. 
  153.         This is due to the fact, that Microsoft DirectX reinstalls 
  154.         original S3 drivers.

  285. 5.      Caveats
  286.  
  287.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  288.     hints on work arounds.
  289.  
  290.  
  291. 5.1     Installation
  292.  
  293.     Installation problems may be checked out in detail by
  294.     "MPEGTest". See documentation. 
  295.        
  296.     If the Media Player encounters any problems with an MCI-device
  297.     (e.g. board removed..) after changes in SYSTEM.INI it marks the 
  298.     device as bad and removes it from his device-table. To reenable 
  299.     it, you have to remove the lines "MPEGVideo=0," and "VideoCD=0," 
  300.     from the MPLAYER.INI file or modify SYTEM.INI again and restart 
  301.     the Media Player without a mpeg-film file name. In Windows 95, 
  302.     the driver is checked at every start of MediaPlayer.
  303.  
  304.     If there were other MPEG-devices installed, their dynalinks are 
  305.     removed, but they remain accessible as MCI-devices.
  306.  
  307.  
  308. 5.2     Using VideoCD / CD-i
  309.   
  310.     Depending on an alternate data format, CD-i's are unreadable by
  311.     some CD-ROM drives. See section 5.11 for details on certain 
  312.         drives.    If you get a message "MCI device not installed" using 
  313.         the VideoCD driver and having inserted a VideoCD in your drive, 
  314.     your CD-ROM driver isn't capable of reading "raw-mode" (2532 
  315.     bytes per sector, no error correction). An updated version 
  316.     should solve the problem.
  317.     If you try to replay pure CD-i's, tracks may not appear. Linear 
  318.     replay and positioning by time/frame are possible.
  319.  
  320.  
  321. 5.3     Distortion of sound / Framesize
  322.     
  323.     Depending on Framesize there might be short flaws in sound 
  324.     (mainly in "primary" mode on slower graphics boards). For this 
  325.     reason frame size in the above mode is limited to 800*600 dots.
  326.     If film stops sometimes for a short while, you should disable
  327.     your disk-cache (e.g. smartdrive) for the drive you play your 
  328.     mpeg files from.
  329.     Replay speed is settable to 1 (speed 1000) or 2 (speed 2000), 
  330.     but, in double speed mode, frames are dropped.
  331.  
  332.  
  333. 5.4     Supported graphic boards / color modes
  334.  
  335.     Recently there are color failures in 24 bpp mode and in
  336.     YUV. Using "offscreen" they aren't used. Using 8 bpp modes may
  337.     lead to false colors on the desktop, which will be restored 
  338.     after closing media player. Try setting up Windows Desktop to 
  339.     use "Windows standard color scheme" if color is mismatched. 
  340.     Current hardware / software doesn't support 64k-banked VGA as 
  341.     well as scattered "offscreen"-surfaces. In this case your 
  342.     graphics cards isn't able to deliver graphics memory "in one 
  343.     piece".    These errors will be solved by future hardware releases.
  344.  
  345.  
  346. 5.5     Other caveats
  347.     
  348.     - Copy / Capture sometimes leads to system hangs.
  349.     - Depending on MPEG coding, some films can show distorted, 
  350.       interrupted video. This won't happen with professional CD-i's 
  351.       or VideoCD's.
  352.         - "Cue to" without the "noshow" flag sometimes crashes the driver
  353.  
  354.  
  355. 5.6     Triton Board failure / 486-er PC's
  356.  
  357.     On some of the newer Pentium boards with the Triton Chipset 
  358.     (mainly Intel Alladin and Zappa) the system crashes after a 
  359.         few seconds running offscreen. The reason is a bug in the chipset
  360.     which may be circumvented by reprogramming it. This is enabled
  361.         automatically, but can be disabled by inserting "TritonFix=0" into 
  362.         the [DCISurface] section of "win.ini" (Win31) or in Registry's 
  363.         section "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/
  364.         Class/MEDIA/DDrawSurface" (Win95).
  365.         If you encounter other crashes, especially corrupting harddisk, 
  366.         you will need to disable IDE prefetch buffer in the BIOS. This 
  367.         is due to a bug in your IDE controller chip in conjunction with 
  368.         the Triton Chipset.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. 5.7     not supported MCI-commands / parameters
  372.     
  373.     - seek parameter exactly
  374.     - only audio and video stream 1 is supported
  375.     - no frame-exact positioning
  376.     - step parameter key not supported

  379. 5.8     OLE-embedding
  380.     
  381.     there is no still frame displayed
  382.  
  383.  
  384. 5.9     Windows 95
  385.     
  386.     Some of the Win95 CD-ROM-drivers aren't capable of reading CD-i 
  387.     inspite of their Win 3.1x counterparts causing no problems. Also,
  388.         on some drives swapping VideoCD's will not be recognised. Close
  389.         Mediaplayer and start it again.
  390.  
  391.     ELSAmotion is only capable of running offscreen if used in 
  392.         conjunction with DirectDraw. On ELSA WINNER graphics boards, 
  393.         Windows 95 driver Version 1.04 and newer is required. If you use 
  394.         it with other graphics boards or older driver versions, you will 
  395.         only have DD-primary support. The same will appear, if you 
  396.     upgrade from Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 without reinstalling 
  397.     ELSAmotion driver. On 2MB cards DirectDraw will only run off-
  398.     screen up to 800*600 pixels with 16 bpp. Future ELSA WINNER 
  399.     drivers will fix this.
  400.  
  401.         If you install ELSAmotion and ELSAvision boards in parallel, the 
  402.         software starting later will have access to primary surface only.
  403.         Newer releases of ELSAvision software will stop this.
  404.     
  405.  
  406. 5.10    Low DOS memory
  407.  
  408.         If you encounter the message: "No memory for CD-ROM data buffer" 
  409.         (or "...control buffer") while starting MPEG or VideoCD driver,
  410.     you are out of DOS-low-memory. This memory is required for 
  411.     reading of VideoCD and CD-i. If you don't plan to play "*.DAT"-
  412.     files directly (single tracks of VideoCD), you may suppress this 
  413.     message by inserting the line: "VideoCDFiles=0" into 
  414.         [ELSAmotion] section of "elsamot.ini". On Win95 systems, these 
  415.         effects are unlikely to happen.

  417. 5.11    Compatibility of CD-ROM's
  418.         The following combinations of CDRom-drive / Controller / driver

  433. 5.12    Coding of Audio Files
  434.         Because ELSAmotion does a lot of buffering, the correct end-of-
  435.         file is hard to recognize on short Audio-only MPEG's. If you are
  436.         a producer of this type of file, include about half a second of 
  437.         silence after your audio.
