  55. 1.      Overview
  56.  
  57.         XREFRESH.EXE is a utility to set the display refresh rate of
  58.         VGA and VESA graphics modes of the ELSA graphics boards
  59.         WINNER 1000ISA,WINNER 1000TRIO, WINNER 1000TRIOV, WINNER 1000AVI,
  60.         WINNER 2000AVI, WINNER 1000PRO/X, WINNER 2000PRO/X, GLoria and
  61.         VICTORY 3D

  84. 3.      Installation
  85.  
  86.         To use this utility, please copy the file XREFRESH.EXE from the
  87.     disk to a directory on your hard disk. This directory should be
  88.     included in your DOS path (environment variable PATH).
  89.  
  90.     If you want to use this utility permanently, you should call it
  91.     in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set the refresh rate automatically
  92.     each time your system is started.

  97. 4.      Usage Notes
  98.  
  99. 4.1     DDC  (VESA Display Data Channel)
  100.  
  101.         If your ELSA graphics board and the connected monitor support
  102.         VESA DDC1 or DDC2B, please call XREFRESH without any parameter
  103.         on command line.
  104.  
  105.         DDC information about the monitor is read via graphics board.
  106.         Using this information, XREFRESH analyses the maximum sweep rate
  107.         of your DDC monitor. With the sweep rate XREFRESH calulates the
  108.         maximum refresh rate for each graphics mode resolution.
  109.  
  110.         This establishes an optimal configuration for your monitor.
  111.  
  112.  
  113.         Hint:
  114.  
  115.         - Only fixed refresh rates, which are implemented in graphics board
  116.           BIOS, can be used.
  117.  
  118.         - If you are using a DDC1 graphics board, the display will be
  119.           blanked for about one secound.
  120.  
  121.         - Our first experiences with DDC monitors (proto types) show,
  122.           that sometimes the DDC information returned from monitor differs
  123.           from the monitor specification. XREFRESH displays the maximum
  124.           available sweep rate of the monitor. If the displayed maximum
  125.           sweep rate is above or extreme below the monitor specification,
  126.           the monitor shows a strange behaviour.  Under these
  127.           circumstances consult the monitor documentation or contact the
  128.           monitor manufacturer.

  130.         - Should the automatic refresh rate setting using the DDC standard
  131.           fail, you can configure the refresh rate via command line parameter
  132.           as described in the next paragraph.
  133.  
  134.           If the automatic refresh rate setting fails, the sweep rate will
  135.           be unneccessary slow, the monitor will flicker and shows a distort
  136.           display or the the monitor will produce a high frequency tone.

  139. 4.2     Command Line Parameters

  153.     This will set the given refresh rate in Hertz for all VESA
  154.     resolutions, as long as your hardware supports this setting;
  155.     otherwise the next lower refresh rate is used instead.

  157.         Example: XREFRESH 75Hz
  158.     For the VESA resolutions from 640 up to 1280 pixels, a refresh
  159.     rate of 75 Hz is set. The setting will become effective the
  160.     next time a VESA mode is started.

  163.       - A setting for individual resolutions is possible as follows:

  177.     The next time a VESA mode with a resolution of 1280 x 1024
  178.     pixels is used, a refresh rate of 75 Hz will be set.

  181.       - You may also set several refresh rates for different
  182.     resolutions in one single call:

  188.         An individual refresh rate is assigned to each of the
  189.     resolutions:
  190.  
  191.                 640 x  480 pixels  75 Hz
  192.         800 x  600 pixels  72 Hz
  193.            1024 x  768 pixels  70 Hz
  194.            1280 x 1024 pixels  60 Hz
  195.                1600 x 1200 pixels  60 Hz

  201.         XREFRESH accepts the following parameters as VGA refresh
  202.     rates (upper or lower case allowed):
  203.  
  204.                 VGASTD
  205.                 VGAHIGH

  207.         Example: XREFRESH VGAHIGH
  208.  
  209.     "VGASTD" sets the refresh rate for the VGA modes 0 to 13 to
  210.     the standard VGA value (horizontal scan frequency 31.5 kHz).
  211.     Depending on the graphics mode, this will result in refresh
  212.     rates of 60 or 70 Hz.
  213.  
  214.         "VGAHIGH" increase the refresh rate by approximately 25% for
  215.         the VGA modes 0 to 13 (horizontal scan frequency 39.4 kHz).
  216.         Depending on the graphics mode, this will result in refresh
  217.         rates of 75 or 87.5 Hz.
  218.  
  219.     At text modi 3 and 7 immediatly the new settings becomes
  220.         effective. The monitor is syncronized again.

  222. 4.3     Problems
  223.  
  224.     If you come across any errors or problems using this utility,
  225.     please note the exact program version number, the command line
  226.     parameters and other circumstances, under which the error or
  227.     problem occurred. This will make it easier for us to track down
  228.     the source of your problem.

  254. 5.2     Monitor Frequency Limits
  255.  
  256.     For the VGA high refresh timing (VGAHIGH), the monitor connected
  257.     to the graphics board must allow a horizontal scan frequency of
  258.     at least 39.7 kHz and a refresh rate of at least 87.5 Hz.
  259.  
  260.     The maximum allowed horizontal scan frequency of the monitor
  261.     (sweep rate) must not be exceeded!
  262.

  264. 5.3     Refresh rates for VGA modes
  265.  
  266.     The command line parameters "VGAHIGH" and "VGASTD" were added
  267.     to set the standard VGA display timings to high or normal
  268.     refresh rates.

  273. 6.      Restrictions / Known Problems
  274.  
  275. 6.1     Permanent Setting
  276.  
  277.     This program does not allow a permanent setting of the refresh
  278.     rates. It must be called each time the operating system is
  279.     started.
  280.  
  281.     This is most easily done by calling the program in your
  282.     AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  285. 6.2     VGA Modes with High Refresh Rate
  286.  
  287.         ( This option is not supported by the WINNER 1000ISA! )
  288.  
  289.     The refresh rates set with the "VGAHIGH" option are no standard
  290.     values. Therefore, it is possible that some high refresh VGA
  291.     modes are not properly displayed on some monitors.
