  52.         This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  53.         Microsoft Windows 95.
  54.  
  55.     The drivers support 256, 32768 and 16 Million colors in all
  56.     resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.

  114. 3.      Installation
  115.  
  116.     This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  117.         Display Driver for Windows 95.
  118.  
  119.         To install the drivers, start the program SETUP.EXE in this
  120.         directory. The installation assistant will help you to install
  121.         the driver with the control panel.
  122.  
  123. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  124.  
  125.     - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  126.       older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  127.     - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  128.       Information Database.
  129.     - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.
  130.

  132. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  133.  
  134.     First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  135.     WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  136.     install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  137.  
  138.     The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  139.     the Windows desktop.
  140.  
  141.     - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  142.       mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  143.     - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  144.     - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  145.       Display Type" will pop up.
  146.     - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  147.       You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  148.     - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and change to
  149.           the WIN95 directory on the ELSAware CD for your WINNER board.
  150.         - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  151.           and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  152.     - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  153.       "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  154.         - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  155.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  156.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  157.           driver.
  158.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  159.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  160.           you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  161.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  162.           Boards.
  163.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  164.           now".
  165.  
  166.     Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  167.     now".
  168.  
  169.     In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  170.     without rebooting your system.

  242. 5.      Release notes
  243.  
  244. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  245.  
  246.     The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  247.     file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  248.     mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  249.     distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  250.  
  251.     The following table shows the meaning of this entries:

  253.     Section [Settings]

  255.     CursorFG/CursorBK
  256.         ColorCursor
  257.  
  258.         With this two entries you can change the color of the
  259.         hardware cursor. The format is:
  260.             CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  261.         at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  262.                 the range 00 to FF of the base color components.
  263.                 You must specify ColorCursor=1 to make this working!
  264.  
  265.     RefreshRate
  266.                 no longer supported!
  267.  
  268.         TI-Snow
  269.                 Set this value to 1, if the screen flickers around the
  270.                 cursor shape while changing the pattern.
  271.                 This switch works only on WINNER 2000PRO/X, -AVI and
  272.                 GLoria.

  275.                 Set this value to 1 to force the 5-5-5 color format in
  276.                 16BPP modes.

  279.     Section [Hardware]
  280.  
  281.     CursorType
  282.  
  283.         In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  284.         graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  285.         this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  286.         by inserting the line
  287.             CursorType=SW
  288.         in your ELSA.INI file.
  289.         This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  290.  
  291.     Video-RAM base address and size
  292.  
  293.         Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  294.         your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  295.         segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  296.         On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  297.         into the host address space. This increases the
  298.         performance of multimedia applications.
  299.         For example, insert the line
  300.             VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  301.         to map the video RAM at the physical address
  302.         A00000000h.
  303.         Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  304.         main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  305.         size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  306.         graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  307.         your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  308.         PCI 4GB.
  309.         If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  310.         VRAM-Size entry:
  311.           for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  312.               WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  313.             VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  314.           and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  315.           the size of the video memory in bytes.

  317.  
  318. 5.2.    DirectDraw support
  319.  
  320.         The display drivers do support DirectDraw, but to use it in an
  321.         application, you must install DirectDraw. The Microsoft
  322.         DirectDraw components are not included in the standard retail
  323.         version of Windows 95.
  324.  
  325.         To install DirectDraw start the program DXSETUP ind the
  326.         directory \ELSAWARE\DDRAW\DIRECTX on the ELSA CD
  327.

  329.  
  330. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  331.  
  332. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  333.  
  334.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  335.     hints on work arounds.
  336.  
  337.  
  338. 6.1     Videomode not available
  339.  
  340.     Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  341.     display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  342.     indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  343.     a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  344.     notification message.
  345.  
  346.  
  347. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  348.  
  349.         On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  350.         32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  351.         very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.
  352.  
  353.  
  354. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  355.  
  356.     Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  357.     a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  358.     cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  359.  
  360.     - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  361.       driver for Windows 95.
  362.     - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  363.       In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  364.       Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  365.       resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  366.  
  367.     or:
  368.     - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  369.       the mouse track.
  370.  
  371.     Hints:
  372.     When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  373.         board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  374.         active.
  375.     With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  376.     drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  377.     the entry "ELSA GmbH Aachen (Germany)".
  378.  
  379.  
  380. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  381.  
  382.     This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  383.     868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  384.     only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  385.     in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  386.         VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  387.         VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  388.  
  389.  
  390. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  391.  
  392.         Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  393.         (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  394.         switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  395.         color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  396.         "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".
  397.  
  398. 6.6.    Unknown and PnP-monitors
  399.  
  400.         If you don't have selected a Monitor or you have a PnP (DDC1)
  401.         Monitor, in all graphics modes the default refresh rate is
  402.         60Hz. The DDC case is becaus a bug in Windows DDC support
  403.         You can change to a higher refresh rate with the program
  404.         WINman. WINman, unlike Windows, can evaluate the monitor
  405.         information provaided by DDC exact.
  406.  
  407. 6.7.    Cursor corruption
  408.  
  409.         If you see some "snow" araound the cursor shape while changing
  410.         the pattern, insert the line
  411.                 TI-Snow=1
  412.         in the section [Settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
  413.         ! This fix slows down the performance of the cursor changing
  414.         ! operations !
  415.
