  3.        Installing VGA Adapter Drivers for GEM Versions 3.0-3.1

  6. The following instructions are applicable to users of GEM Versions 3.0
  7. and 3.1, and the VGA Adapter.
  8.  
  9. The enclosed GEM driver files require a new GEMSETUP.TXT file to be
  10. installed in place of that which is on GEM System Master Disk. The
  11. drivers make full use of the extended graphics modes of the VGA
  12. Adapter. Your VGA monitor must be capable of displaying these
  13. resolutions in order to utilize this driver.

  15.           Be sure that your VGA monitor can display
  16.           800x600 and/or 1024x768-pixel resolution.
  17.           Choosing a higher resolution than your
  18.           monitor is capable of displaying will bring
  19.           about unsatisfactory results.

  23. Before installing GEM, perform the following steps:
  24.  
  25.           1) Make a DISKCOPY of GEM System Master Disk. This copy
  26.              will be used in place of the original during
  27.              installation.
  28.  
  29.           Example:      C:>DISKCOPY A: B:    or
  30.                         C:>DISKCOPY A: A:
  31.  
  32.           2) Copy the appropriate setup file, GEMSETUP.V31 for
  33.              Version 3.1 or GEMSETUP.V30 for Version 3.0, from
  34.              your VGA Adapter Driver diskette to the newly-
  35.              created copy of the GEM System Master Disk, as
  36.              GEMSETUP.TXT.

  38.           Examples:  For Version 3.0,
  39.                      C:>COPY A:GEMSETUP.V30 B:GEMSETUP.TXT
  40.                      For Version 3.1,
  41.                      C:>COPY A:GEMSETUP.V31 B:GEMSETUP.TXT

  44.      Note that you are copying the GEMSETUP file from your VGA
  45.      Driver Diskette to your newly-created GEM System Master Disk
  46.      while renaming it simultaneously.
  47.  
  48.      After the GEM System Master Disk is copied and prepared with
  49.      the new GEMSETUP.TXT file, you can proceed with the
  50.      installation.

  52. The installation of VGA extended mode drivers is a 2-step
  53. process.
  54.  
  55. First, install GEM as per instructions, selecting
  56.  
  57.    IBM 16-Color VGA for PS/2 (640x480) or Compatible
  58.  
  59. as your video driver. Complete the GEM installation instructions
  60. normally. After completing installation, it is a good idea to
  61. start GEM to ensure that it operates properly before doing the
  62. next step.

  64. Next, assuming that GEM worked properly with the IBM VGA driver
  65. loaded, reinsert your System Master Disk and run GEMPREP again.
  66. This time, choose to change your configuration. You want to
  67. change the video adapter part of the configuration in order to
  68. load the VGA Adapter.

  70. Select from the following:
  71.  
  72.    VGA Adapter (800x600) 16-Color Mode
  73.    VGA Adapter (1024x768) 16-Color Mode
  74.  
  75. The program will ask you to insert the GEM DRIVER PACK diskette.
  76. This is your VGA Driver Diskette. The driver will load and the
  77. program will conclude.

  79. You can now begin using GEM.
