  34. 1.0     Introduction
  35.  
  36. This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the User's
  37. Guide or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  38. this file before proceeding with the installation.
  39.  
  40. For information on running the INSTALL program please refer to the following
  41. sections in your User's Guide:
  42.  
  43. "CONFIGURING YOUR CARD"
  44. "RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM"
  45.  
  46. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLATIONS:
  47.  
  48. - In order to match the card to your monitor and to your system
  49.   configuration you must run "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION" before installing
  50.   any drivers
  51. - Please refer to "MAIN SELECTION MENU" in your User's Manual.
  52. - After running "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION", run Install Device Drivers
  53.   and EXIT back to DOS.
  54.  
  55.  
  56. GENERAL INFO FOR UPDATE INSTALLATIONS:
  57.  
  58. If you are updating from a previous version of the mach32 Windows Driver
  59. we suggest that:
  60.  
  61. A) You make a backup of you current WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI prior to
  62.    installation
  63.  
  64. B) You use the UNINSTALL WINDOWS DRIVER Option before installing the
  65.    the new drivers. The UNINSTALL will remove any previous mach32 settings.
  66.  
  67. UNINSTALL PROCESS:
  68.  
  69.    a) Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  70.       disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  71.  
  72.    b) On the Main Menu Screen select the "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVER" and press
  73.       ENTER.
  74.  
  75.    c) From the "Install Device Drivers" pop-up menu select
  76.       "Microsoft Windows"
  77.  
  78.    d) After confirmation of directory and paths you will be presented with
  79.       the "Windows Enhanced" pop-up menu. From this menu, select the
  80.       appropriate "Uninstall" option and follow the directions on the Screen.
  81.  
  82. ****************************
  83.  
  84. 2.0     Adapter Installation
  85.  
  86. Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the mach32 INSTALL
  87. utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
  88. adapter does not conflict with other system resources and that it will
  89. provide optimal performance.
  90.  
  91. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
  92. to install a mach32 graphics adapter.
  93.  
  94. 1)  The mach32 requires port addresses 2E0-2EF and 3A0-3DF.  It also uses
  95.     C0000-C7FFF for VGA BIOS.
  96.  
  97.     Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  98.     which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
  99.     range of 2E0 to 2EF.
  100.  
  101.     Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
  102.     are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
  103.  
  104.     If you have a system containing an on-board graphics controller, consult
  105.     your owners manual on how to disable it.
  106.  
  107.     Check and record how much system memory is installed on the system
  108.     motherboard.
  109.  
  110. 2)  Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager device
  111.     driver is being loaded.
  112.  
  113.     Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may
  114.     interfere with the installation software and should not be loaded
  115.     until the mach32 graphics adapter has been completely installed
  116.  
  117. 3)  After powering down your system, remove your old graphics adapter (or
  118.     disable the on-board graphics controller) and plug-in the mach32.
  119.  
  120.     Connect the monitor cable and mouse cable (if applicable) to the
  121.     mach32 card and power-up the system.
  122.  
  123.     NOTE: Not all mach32 cards have built-in Mouse ports.
  124.  
  125.     If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 1
  126.     and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
  127.  
  128.     If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  129.     essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  130.     etc.) to determine the nature of the conflict.
  131.  
  132.     As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in a different
  133.     system.
  134.  
  135. 4)  Once the system has properly booted, place Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  136.     disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  137.  
  138.     The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
  139.     be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press
  140.     any key to have the INSTALL program update the mach32 EEPROM.
  141.  
  142.     NOTE: The screen will flicker for a few seconds during a configuration
  143.           change.
  144.  
  145.     If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find
  146.     a mach32 based graphics card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove
  147.     any memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file.
  148.

  214. 4.0     Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
  215.  
  216. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
  217.  
  218. 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
  219.  
  220. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select Microsoft Windows.
  221.  
  222. 4) Select INSTALL Windows 3.1 driver:
  223.  
  224.     a) Select Display Drivers only
  225.        - if you have NOT installed Windows based multimedia applications
  226.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  227.  
  228.     b) Select Display Drivers + Video drivers
  229.        - if you have installed Windows based multimedia applications
  230.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  231.        - Note:  INSTALL will not successfully install the Video drivers
  232.          unless it detects that Video for Windows has already been installed.
  233.  
  234. 5) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  235.  
  236. 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  237.    exit the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
  238.  
  239. 7) Start Windows, use the mach FlexDesk Control Panel icon to configure
  240.    Windows for the desired resolution and color depth.
  241.  
  242. Note:  If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, to a different
  243.        driver (i.e. VGA or 8514a), do not use the Windows' Setup icon within
  244.        Windows.  To change the display, exit Windows and change directory
  245.        to the Windows subdirectory.  When at the Windows prompt type SETUP
  246.        and select the desired display driver.
  247.  
  248. For further information regarding the mach32 Windows functions please use
  249. MS Write to read the MACH32.WRI file.  This Write file is copied to the
  250. Windows directory specified during install.
  251.  
  252. 4.1     Multimedia Video Acceleration
  253.  
  254. In order to take advantage of ATI's Multimedia Video Acceleration, you will
  255. require one of the following:
  256.  
  257. - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.0 or 1.1
  258. - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 run-time
  259.  
  260. Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 run-time is available from the following
  261. sources as a self-extracting file called VFW11A.EXE:
  262.  
  263. - On CompuServe, GEnie, and Microsoft OnLine.  VFW11A.EXE is located in the
  264.   Microsoft Software Library.  You can find VFW11A.EXE in the Software
  265.   Library by searching on the word VFW11A.EXE.  On CompuServe, you can also
  266.   get VFW11A.EXE through the Video for Windows library (use "GO WINMM").
  267. - By Modem.  Use the Microsoft Download Service which you can reach by
  268.   calling (206) 936-6735.  The highest download speed available is 14,400
  269.   bits per second.
  270. - On the Internet.  VFW11A.EXE is located on the Microsoft anonymous ftp
  271.   server, which you can reach by typing "ftp ftp.microsoft.com" (without
  272.   the quotation marks) at the ">" command prompt.
  273.  
  274. Once you obtain VFW11A.EXE, perform the following steps:
  275.  
  276. 1. Copy VFW11A.EXE to an empty directory and expand it by typing "VFW11A.EXE"
  277.    (without quotation marks) at the DOS prompt.  You will now have a file
  278.    called SETUP.EXE.
  279. 2. Start Windows.
  280. 3. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  281. 4. In the Command Line box, type the path to the SETUP.EXE file you expanded
  282.    from VFW11A.EXE.  For example:
  283.        c:\download\setup.exe
  284. 5. Setup will install the Video for Windows run-time.
  285.  
  286. Follow the Installation Notes for Windows 3.1 and select Display Drivers 
  287. + Video driver to enable Multimedia Video Acceleration.
  288.  
  289. ****************************
  290.  
  291. 5.0     Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
  292.  
  293. Note:   The following applications are supported:
  294.         AutoCAD R10, R11, R12 (Protected Mode only); 3D Studio R2 and
  295.         AutoShade 386 with Renderman.
  296.  
  297. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
  298.  
  299. 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
  300.  
  301. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select one of the following:
  302.  
  303.         AutoCAD
  304.         AutoDesk 3D Studio
  305.         AutoShade
  306.  
  307. 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  308.  
  309. 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  310.    hit <escape> to exit the INSTALL program.
  311.  
  312. 6) All the AutoDesk products require environment variables to be loaded
  313.    prior to starting the application.  The INSTALL program creates
  314.    batch files that contain all the necessary SET statements.  These
  315.    batch files will be located in the directory specified during the
  316.    driver installation. The following are the default batch file names:
  317.  
  318.         AutoCAD R10, R11 and R12        ADIACAD.BAT
  319.         AutoDesk 3D Studio R2           ADI3DS.BAT
  320.         AutoShade with Renderman        ADISHADE.BAT
  321.  
  322. 7) After running the appropriate batch file, refer to your AutoDesk
  323.    documentation for information on how to select and reconfigure the
  324.    display driver.
  325.  
  326. For further details, please see README.DLX or README.SE after installing 
  327. the drivers.
  328.  
  329. ****************************
  330.  
  331. 6.0     Installation Notes for OS/2
  332.  
  333. 1) Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
  334.    (under OS/2) and check "Set Power-up Configuration", to ensure that you
  335.    have selected an appropriate monitor type:
  336.  
  337.     a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
  338.        default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
  339.     b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
  340.        can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
  341.        Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
  342.        correctly.
  343.  
  344. 2) Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  345.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL may not work
  346.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  347.  
  348. Note: Do not task switch while running the INSTALL program.
  349.  
  350. 3) From the INSTALL Main Selection Menu, select Drivers Installation and
  351.    pick Presentation Manager.  Then follow the instructions given on the
  352.    screen.
  353.  
  354. Note:  If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full screen
  355.        DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full screen.
  356.        You must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
  357.  
  358.  
  359. 4) Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
  360.  
  361. 5) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  362.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  You should see an option for
  363.    ATI mach32.
  364.  
  365. 7) Select 'ATI Technologies mach32' from the list and click OK. Ignore the
  366.    error message pop-up which says "The installed adapter does not support
  367.    the selected display driver.  Do you wish to continue?" and click OK.
  368.  
  369. 8) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
  370.    C:\MACH_OS2 (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't use c)
  371.    Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2
  372.    window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
  373.  
  374. 9) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the
  375.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  376.  
  377.    a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  378.    b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
  379.    c) Open 'System' icon.
  380.    b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
  381.    e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  382.    f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
  383.       menu to close the window.
  384.    g) Shut down and restart your system.
  385.  
  386. NOTE:    Changing Refresh Rates
  387.  
  388. When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution using the mach32
  389. installation diskettes from a DOS full screen window, the computer freezes
  390. up.  IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA frequency since it sets the registers
  391. directly.  This is a design limitation of OS/2 and only applies to the
  392. 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured at any vertical
  393. refresh rate.
  394.  
  395. ****************************
  396.  
  397. 7.0     Installation Notes for WordPerfect 
  398.  
  399. WordPerfect drivers support 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions in 16 colors,
  400. VGA mode for Print Preview.
  401.  
  402. 1) Make sure that WordPerfect has already been installed on your hard drive.
  403.  
  404. 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
  405.    information:
  406.  
  407.    a) The full path name of the WordPerfect directory.
  408.  
  409. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select WORDPERFECT.
  410.  
  411. 4) Select WordPerfect and follow the screen instructions to completion.
  412.  
  413. 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed, 
  414.    exit the program.
  415.  
  416. 6) Change directory to the WordPerfect subdirectory and run WordPerfect.
  417.  
  418. 7) Select display driver in Setup option <shift><F1>.
  419.  
  420. 8) Press <D> for Display.
  421.  
  422. 9) Press <G> for Graphics Screen Type.
  423.  
  424. 10) Select the desired resolution.
  425.

  427.  
  428. 8.0     Installation Notes for Microsoft Word
  429.  
  430. Microsoft Word drivers support 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions in 16 
  431. colors, VGA mode for Print Preview.
  432.  
  433. 1) Make sure that Word has already been installed on your hard drive.
  434.  
  435. 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
  436.    information:
  437.  
  438.    a) The full path name of the Word for DOS directory.
  439.  
  440. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select MICROSOFT WORD.  
  441.  
  442. 4) Select Microsoft Word from the menu and follow the screen instructions 
  443.    to completion.
  444.  
  445. 5) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed, 
  446.    exit the program.
  447.  
  448. 6) Change to your Word directory and start Word.
  449.  
  450. 7) Word's print preview function will automatically use the highest 
  451.    resolution installed. 
  452.  
  453. Note: If the high resolution page preview mode is not available, (i.e.
  454.       the mach32 has not been configured to support high resolutions)
  455.       the VGA 640x480 16 color mode will be used.
  456.  
  457. ****************************
  458.  
  459. 9.0     Installation Notes for Lotus 1-2-3/Symphony
  460.  
  461. The Lotus driver supports:
  462.  
  463. Lotus 1-2-3 version 2.0, 2.01, 2.1 and 2.2;
  464. Symphony version 1.1 to 2.x
  465.  
  466. For VGA text modes:     132x25 and 132x44 in 16 colors;
  467.                         132x44 in 2 colors
  468.  
  469. 1) Make sure that Lotus has already been installed on your hard drive.
  470.  
  471. 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
  472.    information:
  473.  
  474.    a) The full path name of the Lotus directory.
  475.  
  476. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select Lotus 1-2-3.  
  477.  
  478. 4) Select a program version, , for example, Lotus 1-2-3 version 2.2.
  479.  
  480. 5) Follow the on screen instructions to completion.
  481.  
  482. 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed, 
  483.    exit the program.
  484.  
  485. 7) The driver installation is now complete. Remember to run the Lotus 1-2-3/
  486.    Symphony setup program to update the configuration files; only then can 
  487.    you use the driver you just installed.
  488.  
  489. ****************************
  490.  
  491. 10.0     Installation Notes for MicroStation 
  492.  
  493. 1) Make sure MicroStation has already been installed on your hard drive.
  494.  
  495. 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
  496.    information:
  497.  
  498.     a) The full path name of the MicroStation directory.
  499.     
  500. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select MicroStation.
  501.  
  502. 4) When INSTALL has completed copying all necessary files, exit the 
  503.    program.  
  504.  
  505. 5) Reboot the system (if you allowed INSTALL to modify autoexec.bat).  If
  506.    you have created a batch file for the set environment, run the .BAT file.
  507.  
  508. 6) Change directory to the MicroStation subdirectory and run USCONFIG.EXE.
  509.  
  510. 7) Refer to the README.USD file for further information regarding how to 
  511.    use the enhanced features.  This readme file is copied to the 
  512.    MicroStation DRIVERS subdirectory during the drivers install.
  513.  
  514. ****************************
  515.  
  516. 11.0     Driver Compatibility
  517.  
  518. The mach32 accelerator supports more software drivers than any other 
  519. graphics card. This flexibility means that the mach32 accelerator is 
  520. compatible with virtually any software application right out-of-the-box. 
  521. The supported drivers are:
  522.  
  523. *       mach32
  524. *       VGAWONDER+
  525. *       IBM VGA
  526. *       VESA Super VGA
  527.  
  528. These drivers differ by the degree of acceleration, resolution and colors 
  529. supported.
  530.  
  531.  
  532. ****************************
  533.  
  534. 12.0     Turbo Application Interface
  535.  
  536. The mach32 Turbo Adapter Interface (Turbo AI) is a programming interface 
  537. written exclusively for the mach32 accelerator chip. This AI provides 
  538. access to the mach32 graphics controller by providing a "call interface" 
  539. to programs performing display functions in the 8514/A-compatible part 
  540. of the graphics card. This Turbo AI is 100% compatible with the IBM 8514/A 
  541. adapter interface.
  542.  
  543. The Turbo AI is only supported on 2MB Graphics Wonder product. Attempting 
  544. to use the Turbo AI on a 1MB card may result in displays problems.
  545.  
  546. Any application that needs an AI will ask for a TSR (Terminate-and-Stay-
  547. Resident) program called HDILOAD.EXE. This TSR is supplied on a diskette 
  548. that comes with your mach32 accelerator. Install this TSR only if you use 
  549. applications that specifically use an 8514/A adapter interface.
  550.  
  551. There are two categories of software drivers that support the IBM 8514/A 
  552. graphics adapter -- Direct-to-Registers and Adapter Interface. They are 
  553. described as follows:
  554.  
  555. Direct-to-Registers:
  556. The direct-to-registers driver writes directly to the registers of the 
  557. graphics controller. Examples of such applications are MS Windows and 
  558. IBM OS/2 Presentation.
  559.  
  560. Adapter Interface
  561. Many applications access the 8514/A graphics controller using a software 
  562. interface called the 8514 Adapter Interface (AI). Examples are Lotus 1-2-3, 
  563. WordPerfect, and Turbo Pascal. These and many other applications use the AI 
  564. to eliminate the need for separate graphics drivers for different 
  565. applications. Contact your application program vendor for information on 
  566. AI support.
  567.  
  568.  
  569. Installing the Turbo AI:
  570. 1.      Run the mach32 INSTALL program to bring up the Main Selection Menu.
  571. 2.      Select Install Adapter Interface from the menu.
  572. 3.      Although the AI files can be copied to any directory on the hard 
  573.         drive, certain applications require that the AI must be in a 
  574.         directory called \HDIPCDOS. We recommend that you accept \HDIPCDOS 
  575.         as prompted by the installation program. If this directory does not 
  576.         exist on the drive, one will be created. Press<Enter> to continue.

  604. 13.0     Features Changes
  605.  
  606. - New VESA 75Hz Refresh Modes:
  607.  
  608.     ATI has adopted the 75Hz vertical refresh rate modes which have been
  609.     recently standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association
  610.     (VESA).  Where applicable, these new modes will replace the previous
  611.     76Hz modes at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 and the 74Hz mode at
  612.     1280x1024.
  613.  
  614.     In addition, new 90Hz and 100Hz modes are now supported on 2MB VRAM 
  615.     mach32 graphics cards. To access these new modes, use the following 
  616.     procedure:

  618.     To access any of these modes, use the following steps:
  619.  
  620.     1.  Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  621.         disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  622.     2.  From the Main Selection Menu, select Set Power-Up Configuration
  623.     3.  Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
  624.     4.  Under the Monitor Type menu, select either:
  625.             VESA standard 75Hz
  626.             High-Refresh  90Hz
  627.             High-Refresh 100Hz
  628.  
  629. Note:   90Hz and 100Hz selections apply only to current 2MB VRAM mach32 
  630.         graphics cards. Refer to the attached Mode Tables for supported 
  631.         resolutions and color depths.

  633.     5.  Save your monitor selection by pressing <F10>
  634.     6.  From the Main Selection Menu, re-select Set Power-Up Configuration
  635.     7.  Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
  636.     8.  Under the Monitor Type menu, select the Custom... option
  637.     9.  For each resolution, you must specify the vertical refresh rate.
  638.         You will notice that the refresh rate which you have specified in
  639.         step 4 will now be listed as an option, if it is available at that
  640.         resolution.

  642. WARNING!   If the box outline in the Adjustment Screen becomes scrambled, 
  643.            press < Esc > immediately to exit, then try a lower refresh rate.

  648. Note:      Your existing refresh rates will remain unchanged (i.e. may

  654. - VDIF.EXE Utility:
  655.  
  656.     VDIF files are monitor definition files which conform to the VESA Display
  657.     Information Format.  They define parameters which provide optimal
  658.     resolution and refresh rate for the specified monitor.  If your monitor
  659.     type is not already defined in the monitor list of the mach32 INSTALL
  660.     program, having the VDIF file for your monitor will save you time.
  661.     Please note that VDIF files are provided by your monitor manufacturer and
  662.     they may not be available for all makes and models.

  664.     VDIF.EXE is a mach32 software utility which takes a VDIF monitor
  665.     definition file and converts it into an entry in the monitor list
  666.     of the mach32 INSTALL program.  For complete instructions on using
  667.     VDIF.EXE, consult README.VDI in your mach32 Utilities subdirectory
  668.     (default is C:\MACH32).
