  2. Icon Corral 2.0
  3. ---------------
  4. The Icon Corral allows you to prevent specific programs from
  5. adding entries to the taskbar.  This is good for reducing
  6. taskbar clutter caused by programs such as Schedule+, PPP dialer,
  7. perfmon, clock, e-mail notify, iconbar, etc.  Icon Corral optionally
  8. uses taskbar notification area icons (you know, those ones
  9. by the clock) to hold minimized windows without taskbar entries.

  12. New features in 2.0:
  13. --------------------
  14. + Even non-minimized programs can have their taskbar entry hidden
  15. + You can now hide by executable name
  16. + You can configure the taskbar behavior of an executable by a new
  17.   tab on its property page
  18. + You can drag and drop shortcuts and exe's to the iconcorral setup dialog
  19. + Notify icons are updated periodically
  20. + You can choose to give each minimized entry its own notify icon or not
  21. + There is now a setup and uninstall program

  23. Setup
  24. -------
  25. If you are upgrading from an older version of Icon Corral or a beta of
  26. 2.0 without uninstall, you should first do a manual uninstall:
  27. + delete the shortcut in Startup, if you have one there
  28. + remove IconCorl.exe (optional)
  29. + if you're upgrading from a beta of 2.0, remove taskhide.dll
  30. You do not need to worry about cleaning up .ini files or the registry.  
  31.  
  32. To install 2.0, run setup.exe from the distribution files.  Setup will by default
  33. install The Icon Corral into your 'Program Files' directory, and it will
  34. automatically create a shortcut to Icon Corral in your startup group.
  35. Once The Icon Corral is installed, you can delete all distribution files.

  37. To uninstall The Icon Corral, use the Add/Remove Programs control panel
  38. applet.

  40. Usage
  41. -----
  42. Once Icon Corral is installed and running, there are several ways
  43. to configure the taskbar behavior.  The coolest way is to invoke the
  44. property page for an executable:  Icon Corral 2.0 adds a new property
  45. sheet called 'Taskbar' that lets you configure an exe's taskbar behavior.
  46.  
  47. You can also configure the Icon Corral off the context menu of any of
  48. Icon Corral's notify icons.  This brings up the global configuration 
  49. dialog which lets you add, remove, edit, and drag-and-drop entries.  
  50.  
  51. Configuration, either way it is done, is fairly similar.
  52. A series of checkboxes and radio buttons let you choose what you
  53. want hidden (an executable or window) and how (always or just when
  54. minimized), and whether or not the entry will get its own notify
  55. icon when minimized.  If you choose to hide by window title, you can even 
  56. use wildcards (*) in this specification.  There is also an option
  57. for overriding the default taskbar notification icon.
  58. Dragging executables and/or shortcuts to the global setup dialog
  59. creates default specs that can easily be edited.
  60.  
  61. When Icon Corral finds any taskbar entry that meets spec, it will
  62. remove it from the taskbar and add a new notify icon if approprate.  
  63. Left-clicking on a notify icon will restore the corresponding
  64. program.  Right-clicking allows you to do the normal context menu
  65. stuff plus it will let you configure/exit the Icon Corral, and restore
  66. any completely hidden programs (that is, those minimized without their
  67. own notify icons).  When Icon Corral isn't showing any custom notify
  68. icons it shows its own icon.

  70. Bonus: Icon Corral adds 'Disconnect' to Win95 PPP Dialer's context menu.

  72. Notes
  73. -----
  74. + Some executables are not what you'd expect.  For example pbrush.exe
  75.   in c:/windows really just loads paint.exe elsewhere on the system.
  76.   PPP dialer is rnaapp.exe.  
  77. + You can't drag-n-drop DUN icons, because they're not exe's.
  78. + The mouse pointer may (repeatedly) move over the Start button while the
  79.   Icon Corral is loading (this is a fix to an even even more unsightly solution)
  80. + This program currently conflicts with Nortin Navigator Taskbar, and
  81.   some other programs that hook onto the desktop or taskbar.  Side effects
  82.   include not being able to hide when not minimized.
  83. + If you do not see the 'Taskbar' tab on the property pages, you
  84.   may need to update your registry to include the complete path of taskhide.dll
  85.   (do a registry search for taskhide.dll).  You may also need to remove
  86.   long filenames from this path (so I've heard...).
  87. + This program does not fully work on NT 4.0: the context menus don't
  88.   work fully, the startup shortcut isn't added, and hide by executable
  89.   doesn't work.  Otherwise you should be able to use it fine.
  90. + If a notify icon does not look as you'd expect, it may be that
  91.   Icon Corral could not automatically find the correct icon.  In such
  92.   cases, specify a custom notify icon.
  93. + If explorer crashes, notify icons dissapear even though their programs 
  94.   often continue to run.  You can often restore their icons by re-executing
  95.   Icon Corral and pressing hide.
  96. + Minimized programs dissapear from the ALT+TAB chain, non-minimized
  97.   ones do not.
  98. + Icon Corral does not restore taskbar entries for non-minimized
  99.   programs when it exits.  To remedy, simply minimize and restore
  100.   the window(s) in question.
  101.  
  102. Future versions will solve many of the above quirks.  They will also 
  103. allow notify icons to persist even when the window is restored,
  104. and there will be a more powerful grammer for specify window
  105. specs.
