  5.          5 Apr 95       - Initial pre-release
  6.      6 Apr 95    - Fixed palette bugaboo w/ dos boxes in Viper.VxD
  7.         11 Apr 95       - Fixed problem w/ 'Shutdown to MSDOS mode'
  8.         12 Apr 95       - Fixed a DIB problem (improved AVI performance)
  9.         13 Apr 95       - Found the b440 DOS window problem in the VXD.
  10.     19 Apr 95    - Fixed problem w/ Visual Basic forms in all color depths
  11.                 also removed 2 invalid modes from viper.inf
  12.         21 Apr 95       - Fixed Shutdown/DOS hang problems (?)
  13.     25 Apr 95    - Fixed minor palette init problem that caused color shifts
  14.                 with "Desert" and like schemes when changing resolutions.
  15.          3 May 95       - Fixed Viper.INF to prevent spurious filenotfound err

  17. Expand Viper.zip into a empty scratch directory (like C:\VIPER\WIN95)
  18. DO NOT expand these either into your Windows System directory or into a
  19. directory containing the Win3.1 drivers!

  21. Before installation, reset Win95 to the 'standard VGA driver',
  22. reboot, then install using Win95 Display Properties / Settings / Change Driver
  23. /Have Disk...
  24.  
  25. You still need a VIPER.INI file (created by VPRMODE) stored in c:\viper or
  26. another path pointed to by SET VIPERPATH=
  27.  
  28. Note: You may need to edit WIN.INI, and remove the [DrawDib] section to
  29.         allow Video for Windows to retest the new driver and optimize itself.
  30.         This hopefully will be done automatically in a later version...
  31.     This is only needed for a upgrade from a version before 11 April
  32.     to a more current one!

  36. These drivers support 256 colors, 32768 colors, and 16777216 colors.
  37. These drivers support 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x900, and 1280x1024

  49. This is a very unofficial release!  These drivers have not yet receieved 
  50. thorough application testing.  They _have_ been 'smoke tested' w/ the DCT.

  54. Test Matrix:  (these tests were all done w/ the 5Apr version, later versions
  55.               are just being tested on PCI versions, unless another VLB
  56.               specific problem crops up)...

  68. Known Problems:
  69.  
  70.     *   At 16bpp (32k colors) or 32bpp (16M colors), stretched .AVI files are
  71.         rather slow (many frames dropped).  Also, at 32k and 16M colors,
  72.         AVI files in "MS Video One" format perform poorly.
  73.  
  74.     *   Color/Animated cursors are NOT supported.  Sorry!
  75.  
  76.     *    These drivers have not undergone much application
  77.         compatibility testing yet.
  78.  
  79.     *    Bitblt performance is only optimized for 256 color modes.
  80.  
  81.     *    DO NOT TRY TO RUN THE OLD DIAMOND VIPER CONTROL PANEL!  IT WILL GPF!
  82.         it will be automatically removed by the installation once I figure
  83.         out how to get the .INF file to do this...

  85.     *    Do not try to use the DPMI Diamond power management application
  86.         either, it won't work right.
  87.  
  88.     *   32k color color mode has some drawing problems (noteably,
  89.         the copying files status display has a magenta background...)
  90.  
  91.     *   'BitEdit' (a unsupported tool from the MSDN Library) causes stack
  92.         faults at 16 and 32bpp pasting large bitmaps.  This seems to be a
  93.         problem in BitEdit, it is calling the driver with no stack space
  94.         left.  It appears that BitEdit causes USER to recursively call
  95.         itself numerous times, consuming nearly all the available stack,
  96.         until a DeviceBitmapBit driver call crashes in the prolog.
  97.  
  98.     *   I'm hearing that some systems are not shutting down correctly.
  99.         Ditto, some system have problems w/ DOS jobs...  I'm still
  100.         trying to determine whats going on here.
  101.         This may be fixed in the 21 April version.  Then again, it may not.
  102.     2 out of 3 systems are working fine.  I can't seem to get my hands on
  103.     a system that exhibits these problems!
