  34. 1.0     Introduction
  35.  
  36. This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the User's
  37. Guide or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  38. this file before proceeding with the installation.
  39.  
  40. For information on running the INSTALL program please refer to the 
  41. following sections in your User's Guide:
  42.  
  43. - "Configuring the Hardware"
  44. - "Running the INSTALL Program"
  45.  
  46. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLATIONS:
  47.  
  48. - In order to match your mach64 to your monitor and to your system
  49.   configuration, you must run "QUICK SETUP" before installing any
  50.   drivers.
  51. - Please follow the instructions in the "Selecting Your Monitor Type"
  52.   section of your User's Guide.
  53. - After running "QUICK SETUP", select "DRIVERS INSTALLATION" and use
  54.   <escape> to exit back to DOS.
  55.

  57.  
  58. 2.0     Adapter Installation
  59.  
  60. Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the INSTALL
  61. utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
  62. adapter does not conflict with other system resources and to ensure
  63. optimal performance.
  64.  
  65. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps 
  66. required to install an mach64 graphics adapter.
  67.  
  68. 1)  Upon removing the mach64 card from the box, record in your User's 
  69.     Guide, the serial number (found on the non-component side of the 
  70.     card) and the BIOS version (located on a white label on a plug-in 
  71.     BIOS chip on the component side of the card).
  72.  
  73.     The serial number will be helpful if you require ATI Customer 
  74.     Support and will also be required to complete the Warranty Form.
  75.  
  76. 2)  The following port addresses are used by the mach64:
  77.  
  78.     102, 1CE, 1CF, 2EC-2EF, 3?4, 3?5, 3?8, 3?9, 3?A, 3?B, 3DC
  79.     and all aliases; 46E8 (?=B for monochrome, ?=D for color operations)
  80.  
  81.     Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  82.     which may be using addresses at 2E8 or any other I/O address used by 
  83.     the mach64.
  84.  
  85.     Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
  86.     are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
  87.  
  88.     If you have a system containing an on-board graphics controller, 
  89.     consult your owners manual on how to disable it.
  90.  
  91.     Check and record how much system memory is installed on the system
  92.     motherboard.
  93.  
  94.  
  95. 3)  After powering down your system, remove your old graphics adapter (or
  96.     disable the on-board graphics controller) and plug-in the mach64.
  97.  
  98.     If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 2
  99.     and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
  100.  
  101.     If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  102.     essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  103.     etc.) to determine the nature of the conflict.
  104.  
  105.     As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in a different
  106.     system.
  107.  
  108.  
  109. 4)  Once the system has properly booted, place Disk #1 of the supplied
  110.     mach64 disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL
  111.     program.
  112.  
  113.     The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
  114.     be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press
  115.     any key to have the INSTALL program update the mach64 EEPROM.
  116.  
  117.     Also Install may report a conflict at I/O 2E8.  Refer to part 2 for
  118.     possible conflicts.
  119.  
  120.     NOTE: THE SCREEN WILL BE BLANKED FOR FEW SECONDS DURING CONFIGURATION
  121.     CHANGE.
  122.  
  123.     The INSTALL program also checks for potential system conflicts.  The
  124.     "System Information" selection will list the graphics and system
  125.     configuration details.  You can also run this option from command line
  126.     by typing "INSTALL SYSINFO".

  130. 3.0     Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
  131.  
  132.  
  133. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  134.  
  135. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  136.  
  137. 3) From the Drivers Installation menu select Microsoft Windows.
  138.  
  139. 4) Select INSTALL Windows 3.1 driver:
  140.  
  141.     a) Select Display Drivers only
  142.        - if you have NOT installed Windows based multimedia applications
  143.      (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  144.  
  145.     b) Select Display Drivers + Software MPEG
  146.        - if you have installed Windows based multimedia applications
  147.      (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  148.  
  149. 5) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  150.  
  151. 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  152.    exit the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
  153.  
  154. 7) Start Windows, use the ATI Desktop icon to configure Windows for the
  155.    desired resolution and color depth.
  156.  
  157. Note:  If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, to a different
  158.        driver (i.e. VGA), do not use the Windows' Setup icon within 
  159.        Windows. To change the display, exit Windows and change directory 
  160.        to the Windows subdirectory.  When at the Windows prompt type SETUP 
  161.        and select the desired display driver.
  162.  
  163. For further information regarding the mach64 Windows functions please use
  164. MS Write to read the MACH64.WRI file.  This Write file is located in the
  165. ATI\ATIDESK default subdirectory.
  166.  
  167. 3.1     Installation Notes for Windows For WorkGroups 3.11
  168.  
  169. Follow the Microsoft Windows 3.1 installation instructions.
  170.  
  171. The Super VGA 256 color drivers supplied with Microsoft Windows for
  172. WorkGroups 3.11 will not function correctly on a mach64 based card.
  173. These SVGA drivers appear to check for specific Super VGA adapter chip
  174. sets and incorrectly identifies the mach64 card as a SVGA adapter.
  175.  
  176. If you wish to use other Windows for WorkGroups supplied graphics drivers,
  177. you may select the VGA or Super VGA (800x600, 16 color) driver.

  180. 3.2     Installation Notes for Software MPEG for Windows 3.1
  181.  
  182. During the Windows driver installation (refer to section 3.0), the INSTALL
  183. program will prompt the user if they want to optionally install the 
  184. Software MPEG driver. Software MPEG drivers require Video for Windows to 
  185. be installed in the system. If Video For Windows is not detected to be 
  186. installed in the system, the INSTALL program will default to installing 
  187. display drivers only.

  191. 4.0     Installation Notes for Windows 95 Display Driver
  192.  
  193. For detailed information of Windows 95 drivers and ATI Utilities please 
  194. refer to the README.W95 file on the disk label "WIN95 Driver".  The file
  195. is located in the WIN95 subdirectory.
  196.  
  197. The Windows 95 mach64 enhanced display driver is a Windows 95 mini driver.  
  198. It is installed and configured using the standard Windows 95 configuration 
  199. utilities.  The installation procedure for the driver are as follows:
  200.                                       
  201. Note: Windows 95 will require a re-start to implement certain display 
  202.       settings 
  203.  
  204. 1) Start Windows 95. 
  205.  
  206. 2) Insert the disk labelled mach64 Windows 95 Drivers into a floppy drive.
  207.  
  208. 3) Click on the Start button. Click on the Run menu item. 
  209.  
  210.    Type A:\WIN95\SETUP.EXE in the text entry area. Press OK.
  211.  
  212. 4) Follow the instructions displayed in the help.

  217. 5.0     Installation Notes for Software MPEG for Windows 95
  218.  
  219. 1) Start Windows 95. 
  220.  
  221. 2) In the Start menu, click "Run..".  
  222.  
  223. 3) Insert the disk labelled mach64 Windows 95 Driver into the disk drive.  
  224.  
  225. 4) On the command line, 
  226.  
  227.     Type A:\MPEG95\SETUP OR B:\MPEG95\SETUP.  
  228.     
  229. 5) Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

  234. 6.0     Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
  235.  
  236. Note:   The following applications are supported:
  237.     AutoCAD R10, R11, R12 and R13(Protected Mode only);
  238.     3D Studio R2,R3,R4 and AutoShade 386 with Renderman.
  239.  
  240. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  241.  
  242. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  243.  
  244. 3) From the Drivers Installation menu select one of the following:
  245.  
  246.     AutoCAD
  247.     AutoDesk 3D Studio
  248.     AutoShade
  249.  
  250. 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  251.  
  252. 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  253.    hit <escape> to exit the INSTALL program.
  254.  
  255. 6) All the AutoDesk products require environment variables to be loaded
  256.    prior to starting the application.  The INSTALL program creates
  257.    batch files that contain all the necessary SET statements.  These
  258.    batch files will be located in the directory specified during the
  259.    driver installation. The following are the default batch file names:
  260.  
  261.     AutoCAD R10, R11, R12 and R13    ADIACAD.BAT*
  262.     AutoDesk 3D Studio R2, R3, R4    ADI3DS.BAT
  263.     AutoShade 2 with Renderman       ADISHADE.BAT
  264.  
  265.  * ADIACAD.BAT is not required under ACAD 12 and 13 default stand-alone
  266.    installations.  If the TurboDLD driver option does not appear in the
  267.    video display selection list, run the batch file.
  268.  
  269. 7) After running the appropriate batch file, refer to your AutoDesk
  270.    documentation for information on how to select and reconfigure the
  271.    display driver.
  272.

  276.  
  277. 7.0     Installation Notes for OS/2
  278.  
  279. Notes
  280.      a) Before installing the ATI OS/2 display drivers, you must
  281.        set your system to use the IBM supplied VGA driver. Type SETVGA from
  282.        a full screen OS/2 session to accomplish this.
  283.  
  284.      b) Check the Window List (press CTRL-ESC) to see if you have any 
  285.        WIN-OS/2 or DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the OS2 device 
  286.        driver install not complete successfully if a WIN-OS/2 or DOS 
  287.        session is running.
  288.  
  289.      c) To complete the install successfully you will require the following
  290.        information:
  291.  
  292.        *The OS/2 boot drive on which the PM driver is located.
  293.        *The default ATI OS/2 driver directory is C:\MACH_OS2.
  294.  
  295. After you have set the operating system to use the IBM supplied VGA driver:
  296.  
  297. 1) Open an OS/2 Window or Full Screen command prompt, insert disk #1 of the
  298.    mach64 diskettes.  Change to the drive containing the ATI disk
  299.    and type OS2INST.
  300.  
  301. 2) When the main selection menu appears,
  302.  
  303.    a) Select Drivers Installation and press <Enter>.
  304.    b) From the Install Enhanced Drivers menu select IBM OS/2 and 
  305.       press <Enter>
  306.    c) Follow the on screen prompts until this portion of the installation
  307.       process complete.
  308.  
  309. 3) When the files have been successfully copied to your hard disk, open an
  310.    OS/2 session and type DSPINSTL, then press <Enter>.
  311.  
  312. 4) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  313.    and click OK to bring up the Primary Display Driver List.
  314.  
  315. 5) Select "ATI mach64 (Enhanced x.xx)" from the list and click OK.
  316.  
  317.    Note: Users of OS/2 WARP will be presented with a Monitor 
  318.    Configuration/Selection panel.  Select "Install Using Defaults
  319.    for Monitor Type".
  320.  
  321. 6) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
  322.    C:\MACH_OS2   (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't 
  323.    use c: Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, 
  324.    exit the OS/2 window or full screen session. Shut down and restart 
  325.    your system.
  326.  
  327. 7) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the
  328.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  329.  
  330.    a) Open 'OS/2 System' folder.
  331.    b) Open 'System Setup' folder.
  332.    c) Open 'System' object.
  333.    b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
  334.    e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  335.    f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
  336.       menu to close the window.
  337.    g) Shut down and restart your system.
  338.

  343. 8.0     Installation Notes for Windows NT 3.5/3.51
  344.  
  345. For installation instructions of Windows NT 3.5/3.51 drivers please refer
  346. to the README file on the supplementary NT disk.

  350. 9.0     VESA Support
  351.  
  352. The VESA modes supported by your mach64 card are dependent upon the amount
  353. of video memory and the monitor type selected in the ADVANCED or QUICK 
  354. SETUP. To determine the modes supported by your current configuration you 
  355. must install the mach64 utilities, then run VESATEST from the mach64 
  356. directory.
  357.  
  358. 1) Run INSTALL and select "Utilities Installation" from the Main Menu.
  359.  
  360. 2) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  361.  
  362. 3) When INSTALL is finished copying all necessary files, press <escape> to
  363.    exit install.
  364.  
  365. 4) Change directory to the mach64 (default) directory and type "VESATEST".
  366.  
  367. 5) All the modes currently supported will be displayed.
  368.  
  369. If you experience problems using applications which support VESA, please
  370. install the mach64 Utilities and consult README.VBE for further 
  371. information.

  375.  
  376. 10.0     VGA Feature Connector
  377.  
  378. The VGA feature connector is provided on mach64 graphics accelerators
  379. for the purpose of passing display information to optional add-in products
  380. such  as TV or video playback (overlay) boards.  However, for VRAM-based
  381. accelerators such as the GRAPHICS PRO TURBO 1600, GRAPHICS PRO TURBO and
  382. WINTURBO, the feature connector only provides display information if the
  383. mach64  is placed in VGA mode.  This means that the user must select a VGA
  384. or SVGA driver prior to running Windows, etc.
  385.  
  386. VRAM based products use an advanced 64-bit architecture in which the
  387. data path from the VRAM connects directly to the DAC. This high performance
  388. 64-bit bus between the VRAM and the DAC provides for a substantially
  389. increase in bandwidth for improved refresh rate support at higher
  390. resolutions and color depths.  Mach64 drivers are written to operate in
  391. accelerator mode and utilize the full capabilities of the dual-ported VRAM
  392. memory.  However, when operating in accelerator mode, the low bandwidth VGA
  393. feature connector does not carry pixel information, and thus, overlay add-in
  394. cards connected to this feature connector will have no display or 'black
  395. windows'.  To use the feature connector with VRAM-based products, a VGA
  396. driver must be used.
  397.  
  398. If the mach64 is installed in a PCI slot, palette snooping must also be
  399. enabled.   This will ensure that the color palette on both the graphics
  400. and overlay cards are properly initialized.  Refer to your system
  401. documentation for instructions on how to do this (for many PCI motherboards,
  402. the system CMOS provides a user accessible switch to enable palette
  403. snooping).
  404.  
  405. For DRAM-based mach64 products such as the GRAPHICS XPRESSION and WINBOOST,
  406. the VGA feature connector can be used in both accelerator and VGA modes.
  407. Due to the single-ported DRAM memory, data must return to the graphics chip
  408. and appear on the feature connector, regardless of the mode.  However when
  409. operating in accelerator mode, the mach64 driver must be directed to load
  410. the VGA palette on the overlay card.  This is accomplished by adding
  411. VGADAC=ON to the MACX section of the SYSTEM.INI.
  412. Note that if the mach64 accelerator is installed in a PCI slot, palette
  413. snooping will also have to be enabled as described previously.

  417. 11.0  FEATURE.EXE and the VGA Feature Connector
  418.  
  419. FEATURE.EXE is a small utility that allows one to control the state of the
  420. Video Feature connector on ATI264-CT based products only. The Video Feature
  421. Connector resides on the Video card and is used by other peripheral cards
  422. in the system to pass video information to and from the Graphics Adapter;
  423. the link is achieved via a 24-pin ribbon cable that connects peripheral
  424. cards and the video adapter in a daisy-chain fashion.
  425.  
  426. There are two modes of operation for the Feature Connector supported by
  427. FEATURE.EXE:
  428.   
  429.   default - supports resolutions up to and including 800x600, AND refresh
  430.         rates up to and including 75Hz.
  431.  
  432.   1024    - supports resolutions up to and including 1024x768, AND refresh
  433.         rates up to and including 75Hz.
  434.  
  435. For example, if an user wants to enable pass-through at 1024x768 mode, 
  436. the syntax is :
  437.  
  438.     Feature 1024 <enter>
  439.  
  440. To install FEATURE.EXE:
  441.  
  442. 1) Run the INSTALL program from the disk #1.
  443.  
  444. 2) Select "Utilities Installation".
  445.  
  446. 3) Follow the messages and once complete, FEATURE.EXE will reside in
  447.    the \mach64 default directory on your hard drive.

  452. 12.0     Reporting Problems
  453.  
  454. If you experience difficulties, open the file REPORT.TXT and complete
  455. the Problem Report form.
