  38. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  39.  
  40. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.

  42. 3) From the Install Enhanced Drivers menu select MicroStation.
  43.  
  44. 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  45.  
  46. 5) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed, 
  47.    exit the install program.

  49. 6) Reboot the system (if you allowed INSTALL to modify autoexec.bat).  If
  50.    you have created a batch file for the set environment, run the .BAT file.

  52. 7) Reconfigure MicroStation for the ATI MicroStation V2.3.1 display

  56. 3.0     Known problems
  57.  
  58. The mach64 is only compatible with the following Vibrant Graphics display 
  59. driver options:

  61.          ATI GRAPHICS PRO TURBO
  62.          ATI GRAPHICS XPRESSION
  63.          mach64

  65. Selecting any other graphics display, may cause display problems and/or 
  66. reports incorrect error messages.

  70. Garbage screens and intermitant system lock-ups will occur if BREAK is 
  71. set to ON.  To correct the problem set BREAK OFF.

  95.   The MicroStation Driver is a protected-mode driver designed to
  96.   improve the user interface of MicroStation products by implementing the
  97.   full resolution of your graphics board and monitor and by providing
  98.   the means to customize some of the presentation parameters.

  126.   To run the MicroStation Driver your computer system must be capable of
  127.   running your intended application.

  137. B.1   Installation for MicroStation Driver
  138.  
  139.   Your Microstation Driver can be easily installed with minimum effort:
  140.  
  141.      1. Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes. 
  142.      
  143.      2. Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  144.  
  145.      2. Choose the 'Microstation' entry.
  146.  
  147.      3. Follow the instructions as given by the Installation program.
  148.         Use the F1 key to bring up context-sensitive help screens at any
  149.         point in the installation process.

  152. C.0   Included Files
  153.  
  154. The following files are included with the MicroStation 4.0 driver.
  155.  
  156.   README.USD     This file in standard ASCII format.
  157.  
  158.   ATIU40R.EXP    The executable driver file which is unarchived by INSTALL.EXE
  159.   ATIU40L.EXP    into the DRIVERS sub-directory, created by MicroStation when
  160.                  MicroStation is installed. The DRIVERS sub-directory is
  161.                  located just below the root MicroStation directory
  162.                  (C:\USTN40\DRIVERS).
  163.  
  164.   ATIU40R.MA     This .MA file is required by MicroStation to interface
  165.   ATIU40L.MA     between the protected mode driver ATIU40?.EXP) and the
  166.                  MicroStation executable file.  This file loads and
  167.                  unloads, and handles all calls to the .EXP file at
  168.                  MicroStation's request. The .MA file is the file located
  169.                  by MicroStation when it reads its CONFIGUR.DAT file,
  170.                  located in the C:\USTN40\DATA directory, using the
  171.                  MicroStation environment variable MS_PMGRAPH.
  172.                  MicroStation only knows how to load a .MA file, not a .EXP
  173.                  file, so it is up to the .MA file to load the .EXP.
  174.                  ATIU40?.MA file is also unarchived by INSTALL.EXE at the time
  175.                  of installation and placed in the DRIVERS sub-directory
  176.                  along with ATIU40?.EXP.

  178.   ATIU40R.MGL    This file is just a text file whose first line contains the
  179.   ATIU40L.MGL    line Mach64 MicroStation 4.0, which is displayed by the
  180.                  MicroStation USCONFIG program to allow you to select this
  181.                  MicroStation 4.0 driver. The .MGL file is uncompressed by
  182.                  handled by INSTALL.EXE into the DRIVERS sub-directory along
  183.                  with the .MA and .EXP files (all three files should have the
  184.                  same name).

  186.   ATICFGR.DAT    This is the text file created by INSTALL.EXE to be read by
  187.   ATICFGR.DAT    ATIU40?.EXP file during driver initialization.

  189. D.0   Technical Notes
  190.  
  191. D.1   Anti-Aliasing
  192.  
  193.   Anti-aliasing is technical jargon for the process by which graphics
  194.   drivers create the effect of smooth lines on your screen.  In normal
  195.   graphics modes most lines exhibit a stair-step effect (jaggies) which
  196.   detracts from the straightness of the line.  Anti aliasing "blurs" those
  197.   stair-steps to create the illusion of a straight line.
  198.  
  199.   Lines in standard graphics are a single pixel (screen element) wide,
  200.   with that pixel being the actual color of the line.  Anti-aliasing draws
  201.   most lines using 2 pixels, with each pixel pair summing to a full
  202.   intensity of the desired color, visually.  In this way, the eye is fooled
  203.   into seeing two pixels as only one, at some position midway between the
  204.   two anti-aliased ones.
  205.  
  206.   Anti-aliasing is accomplished by using the palette entries (colors)
  207.   above color 15 (16-255) to store graded shades of the first 16 colors (0-
  208.   15) compared to the background color.  The graded shades of these 16
  209.   color are computed and loaded automatically by the driver once
  210.   MicroStation communicates the base 16 colors and the background color to
  211.   driver.  The background color is user set with the AA_BACKGROUND_COLOR
  212.   option in the ATIUCFG8.DAT file.
  213.  
  214.   By using this graded palette shading technique, the MicroStation driver
  215.   is essentially trading the number of available colors (16 from 256) for
  216.   smooth anti-aliased lines.  If you try operating the MicroStation driver
  217.   in anti-aliased mode in a 16 color graphics mode, the MicroStation driver
  218.   will ignore the anti-aliasing and just use the 16 colors available for
  219.   that graphics mode. This is done because the MicroStation driver assumes
  220.   that your graphics board is only capable of 16 simultaneous colors and,
  221.   since anti-aliasing requires at least 256 colors, ignores the anti-
  222.   aliasing mode.

  224. D.2   The USCONFIG.EXE Program
  225.  
  226.   The MicroStation configuration program USCONFIG.EXE, when run, will
  227.   search the DRIVERS sub-directory for all files with the extension .MGL
  228.   and display the first line of each file found as an entry under the
  229.   Vendor Supplied Driver selection menu.  If the user picks a .MGL menu
  230.   entry, an initialization program specified by the .MGL file's second line
  231.   (if any) will be executed before continuing.

  233. D.3   The UCONFIG.DAT File
  234.  
  235.   There is a file called UCONFIG.DAT, located in the DATA sub-directory,
  236.   created by MicroStation when User Preferences are saved during a
  237.   MicroStation session.  If MicroStation is configured to use a protected
  238.   mode driver, the variable MS_PMGRAPH will be set in the .DAT file to the
  239.   path(s) containing your protected mode driver that exist at the time the
  240.   UCONFIG.DAT file is executed.  If you subsequently exit MicroStation and
  241.   reconfigure the display driver for a different protected mode driver,
  242.   MicroStation will not recognize the new configuration unless you change
  243.   the UCONFIG.DAT file.  Using a text editor, change the line containing
  244.   the MS_PMGRAPH to point to the new protected mode driver(s).  Do not
  245.   delete this file, otherwise you will lose all your other MicroStation
  246.   customizations.

  248. D.4   Becoming an Integral Part of MicroStation
  249.  
  250.   Because the MicroStation Driver is for MicroStation applications only,
  251.   it can become an integral portion of that program and is basically
  252.   transparent to the user. The MicroStation Driver runs in protected-mode
  253.   taking advantage of your 386 computing power. MicroStation Driver is
  254.   not a TSR (terminate and stay resident program) so it does not have to be
  255.   loaded in the valuable lower 640K of RAM that many other programs
  256.   require.
