  46. The DPMS Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program allows you to use the
  47. energy saving features of a monitor that conforms to the VESA Display Power
  48. Management Signaling (DPMS) Proposal.  This program provides DPMS signaling
  49. under the DOS environment.  This TSR will not provide DPMS support under
  50. Windows.  If you wish to use DPMS under Windows, use the ATI Desktop DPMS
  51. icon.
  52.  
  53. The DPMS proposal is designed to work in conjunction with other power
  54. management standards such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
  55. Energy Star Computer program in reducing PC power consumption after an
  56. extended period of inactivity from the user.  The power management states
  57. are designed to follow the Microsoft/Intel Advanced Power Management standard.

  59. The three power management states are known as Standby, Suspend and Off.
  60. Standby represents a state of minimal power reduction.  Suspend represents
  61. a state with a significant reduction in power consumption.  Off represents
  62. the lowest level of power consumption.

  66. 2.0     Requirements
  67.  
  68. - ATI Accelerator Card: GRAPHICS ULTRA PRO, GRAPHICS ULTRA+, GRAPHICS WONDER

  70. - System:
  71.         DPMS requires at least a 386-based or higher computer running
  72.         at least DOS 3.0 or greater.
  73.  
  74. - Monitor:
  75.        DPMS compliant monitors ONLY. Damage may occur to non-DPMS monitors

  79. 3.0     Installation
  80.  
  81. When you run the INSTALL Program on Disk #1 and select the "Utilities
  82. Installation", DPMS.COM is automatically copied to the Utilities
  83. subdirectory (default is C:\MACH32).  Start the program by typing "DPMS"
  84. or DPMS followed by one or more options at the DOS prompt.  See the
  85. following section for details regarding the various options that are
  86. available for DPMS.

  91. 4.0     Using DPMS
  92.  
  93. To use the screen saver, simply type "DPMS" at the DOS prompt.  Type
  94. "DPMS HELP" to get an overview of the commands that DPMS recognizes.  The
  95. program is not case insensitive so keywords can be entered in upper or lower
  96. case.  Keywords and parameters must be separated by at least one space or
  97. tab character, e.g. "DPMS STBY 5" is fine, but "DPMS STBY5" will generate
  98. an "unknown parameter" error.
  99.  
  100. Typing DPMS with no options will load the TSR with default timer settings.
  101. If the TSR is already loaded, typing DPMS with no options simply displays
  102. the current timer settings; the timers are not adjusted.
  103.  
  104. If any timer keyword is specified, all timers that are not specified are
  105. automatically disabled.  For example "DPMS STBY 5" will set the Standby
  106. timer to 5 minutes and disable the Suspend and Off timers.  In other words,
  107. the screen saver will only go into standby mode; it will never go into either
  108. of the other two modes.  To set all three timers, specify them all on the
  109. command line e.g. "DPMS STBY 5 SUSP 10 OFF 15".

  111. The following options are recognized by DPMS.  These options may appear in
  112. any order, although specifying HELP or UNLOAD will cancel all other options:
  113.  
  114. STBY {number of minutes} - Sets the standby timer.  After the specified
  115.     number of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts
  116.     the monitor into Standby mode.
  117.  
  118. SUSP {number of minutes} - Sets the suspend timer.  After the specified
  119.     number of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts
  120.     the monitor into Suspend mode.
  121.  
  122. OFF {number of minutes} - Sets the off timer.  After the specified number
  123.     of minutes has elapsed with no keyboard activity, DPMS puts the
  124.     monitor into Off mode.

  126. NOMOUSE - Normally, DPMS only monitors the keyboard for activity and will
  127.     optionally monitor the mouse for activity only if it detects that a
  128.     Microsoft compatible mouse driver is installed.  Specifying the NOMOUSE
  129.     option tells DPMS to ignore all mouse activity, even if a mouse driver
  130.     is detected.

  132. QUIET - Suppresses the normal messages that DPMS displays when called. This
  133.     option is useful in batch files.
  134.  
  135. UNLOAD - Unloads DPMS from memory.
  136.  
  137. HELP - Displays a usage message and then exits, no other action is done.

  141. 5.0     Known Problems
  142.  
  143. - DOS:
  144.  
  145.     If DPMS is loaded and you receive the message "DPMS unable to unload
  146.     itself." when you attempt to unload DPMS, it is likely another TSR has
  147.     been loaded after DPMS.  Try unloading the other TSR first and then
  148.     attempt to unload DPMS again.
  149.  
  150. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 Enhanced Mode:
  151.  
  152.     The DPMS DOS TSR does not run under Windows.  When Windows 386 enhanced
  153.     mode is started up, DPMS "goes to sleep" by disabling its internal
  154.     timers and resumes operation when you either open up a full screen DOS
  155.     box or you exit Windows.
  156.     If you wish to use DPMS under Windows, use the ATI Desktop DPMS icon.

  158. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 Standard Mode:
  159.  
  160.     The DPMS DOS TSR (DPMS.COM) is not supported under Windows when run
  161.     in standard mode (/s).  Prior to starting Windows, change directory to
  162.     the mach32 utilities directory and type:

  164.            DPMS UNLOAD
  165.  
  166. - Microsoft Windows 3.0:
  167.  
  168.     ATI does not support DPMS under Windows 3.0.
  169.  
  170. - Screen Savers:
  171.  
  172.     DOS screen savers should not be used in conjunction with the DOS
  173.     DPMS.COM TSR.
  174.  
  175.     Windows 3.1 screen savers should not be used in conjunction with mach
  176.     FlexDesk control panel's DPMS function.
