#### BINHEX cyber-gif.hqx ****
Date: Tue, 23 Jun 92 00:21 PDT
From: rla20@duts.ccc.amdahl.com (Roger Allen)
I am submitting my GIF-viewing program CyberGif into the sumex-aim archives.
A description follows. If you like it, please remember to support shareware.
Roger Allen
#####CyberGif Description
CyberGif is a Macintosh GIF viewer.
"Why another one?" you may ask. Well, CyberGif has a lot of features that
aren't available on the other GIF viewers that I have found. I tried the
other gif viewers/editors and found the features that I wanted in a GIF viewer.
These features include:
-Fast Decode & Display--see the gifs as you decode them.
-Small Program Size--only 54k! Save disk space for GIFs--not viewers!
-Dithering--CyberGif allows black & white Macs (w/ColorQD) to see GIF files!
Please note that CyberGif does this AUTOMATICALLY only if all monitors
hooked up to the Mac are in two color mode. Multiple monitors of differing
depths may confuse CyberGif. A future version will fix this.
-Slide Show--just put the GIFs you want in a directory and watch the full
screen show! Also note that the GIFs must be of type 'GIFf' to be seen in
the slide show.
-Growable/Scrollable windows--you can choose to stretch/shrink the window!
-Fit Gif to Screen--and keeps the GIF proportions correct!
-Full Screen Window--for those times when a window and menu bar are too
distracting!
-System Palette Option--see how the GIF would look as a background picture!
-Information Window--look at the current GIF's colors and much more!
-Flash--get rid of color residue that most GIF viewer leave in the background!
#####NOTES:
CyberGif has been developed and tested on a Macintosh IIcx running
System 7.0 with both Virtual Memory and 32-bit mode on.
I have personally tested CyberGif on the following Macs:
SE/30, System 6; IIcx, System 6; IIcx, System 7; IIci, System 6;
LC, System 6.0.8; IIsi, System 7; Classic II, System 7; PowerBook 140, System 7.
On any machine without Color Quickdraw, CyberGif dies a quick and ugly death.
This will be fixed in a future version.
On multiple-monitor machines, automatic dithering will NOT work unless
ALL screens are set to 1-bit mode.
#####CyberGif Version History
1.1 - This version hopefully fixes the problems that some users had with
Mac LCs and the HDT Lightshow init. It also includes a way to pause
the slideshow. (June, 1992)
1.0 - The first official release of CyberGif. (May, 1992)

From: Dr. G. Paul Savage <paul.savage@carbon.chem.csiro.au>
Subject: [*] earth gif
This is a GIF picture of our planet. It would make a nice startupscreen but
since it's an odd size (670*660) I thought it would be better to post the
original GIF rather than cut it down to size. That way you lucky souls with
larger screens can use GifConverter to make a big stsrtupscreen or desktop.
Enjoy

#### BINHEX gif-converter-229-to-2210.hqx ****
An updater to convert Kevin Mitchell's GIFConverter 2.2.9 to version
2.2.10.
#### BINHEX gif-converter-229.hqx ****
This is GIFConverter 2.2.9. Display any GIF, TIFF, RIFF, MacPaint,
Thunderscan, Startupscreen, RLE, or PICT file on any Macintosh just by
downloading this file! Uses color QuickDraw on color Macintoshes. GIFConverter
is SHAREWARE, $40 plus S&H.
Since version 2.2.8, LZW decompression (GIF and TIFF) has been sped up, and
crashes when open PICT or TIFF files with many colors have been removed.
Version 2.2.9 has support for TIFF LZW-compressed and RGB files. It also has
the capability to change the color palette that the images use, which means it
can make startupscreen files that work right at startup time.
GIFConverter can do scaling by percentage, higher resolution (144 or 288 dpi)
pictures, and true halftones on 300 dpi QuickDraw printers such as the HP
DeskWriter and non-Postscript laser printers.
You can print on any Macintosh printer (halftones on LaserWriter, color on
ImageWriter II or any color PostScript printer and the LaserWriter 6.0+ driver
(when Apple gets it to work) or many other color printers), or save to any of
these file formats plus EPSF! Every feature is fully implemented, so you can
test GIFConverter with your complete system!
Support for GIFConverter is available online through Compuserve, GEnie,
America Online, and Internet Mail.
This file is a self-extracting archive, and has been checked for viruses with
Disinfectant 2.4.
Send comments and bug reports to 74017.2573@compuserve.com.

Subject: GIF specifications
A few weeks ago, I asked for someone to send me the Graphics Interchange
Format (GIF) specifications. The replys were mixed.... half of the people had
the specs, and the other half wanted a copy, so it seems that the Archive
is a good place for it.
I also recieved some 'C' source code to do the encoding and decoding,
but it is not specifically for the Mac. If there is sufficient demand,

From: beckett@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu (Robert Beckett)
Subject: GIFTyper1.0.hqx
I am posting this for the author:
GIF Typer is a small application that was designed to be a tool to prepare
GIF files between GIF viewing applications like QuickGIF and Giffer and
communication packages like Fetch and White Knight. When GIF files are
brought into the Mac, they are often of a type unknown to GIF viewers. In
the past, this forced a GIF frequenter to have to suffix all files with
.gif. GIF Typer offers a neat fix for this problem.
To use GIF Typer, simply drag and drop a file on top of GIF Typer's icon.
GIF Typer will launch and convert the files to a GIF type and quit, all in
the blink of an eye. Multiple files can be converted by selecting a group
of files and dropping them on GIF Typer.
GIF Typer requires System 7.x to work. Freeware.

Giffer version 1.12 (Sep 23, 1991)
Giffer, an image display program for the Macintosh II, is Copyright
1987-91 by Stephen Blackstock, who reserves all rights to its
distribution and sale.
Giffer is Beerware. If you like it and use it, please send me a case of
beer (or $20 so I can buy one). If you do send me something, I'll make
you a registered user of Giffer, and that will entitle you to receive
news about Giffer updates. (Please also tell me what version you have!)
I plan to work on Giffer more, so this update news might be beneficial
if you like the program.
Giffer is an image display program for the Macintosh II family of
computers. It works best in 256 color (8-bit) mode, but will work in 16
color (4-bit), 4 color (2-bit) and 2 color (1-bit) modes as well.
Giffer also works in 24-bit mode, but 24-bit images will not be
displayed in full color (they will be dithered to 256 colors). (GIF
currently does not support 24 bits of color, so there would be no way to
save a 24-bit images in GIF.) It is a memory-intensive program, so it's
nice to have as much memory as you can get to run it. However, it will
run with the standard 1 Meg.
1.12 (8/91) - Fixed bug which caused off-screen dialogs on IILC. Added
support for Flex images.
1.11 (6/91) - Added color icons for System 7.0. Improved System 7.0
comaptibility. Fixed bug which caused crash on Mac LC.
1.10b1 (3/91) - Added limited support for TIFF. Allowed Giffer to read
GIF 89a revision files (needs significant testing). Fixed the Open
command so that it will allow any file to be selected when the option
key is held down as the menu selection is made.

From: mjkobb@media-lab.media.mit.edu
Greetings,
Attached is a spectacular 640x480x256 GIF image by David Palermo. It's a
surrealistic rendering of a sort of "cosmic wristwatch" on a marble surface.
It's very hard to describe, but it's visually stunning, and makes a superb
desktop image. I downloaded it from America Online and re-upload it here with
his permission. David's description follows:
"This image is of a woman (my friend's wife) sitting inside a time piece
looking out into space which is inside the time piece. Does that make sense?
I guess you will have to see it to understand."
Please note that the correct title is "Timetraveller". It may have been
truncated somewhere along the way...
David can be reached at (619) 944-9907 or at Space7 on America Online.
