  8. The computing facilities are provided in order to promote and support
  9. academic pursuits.  Academic computing facilities are therefore to be
  10. used only for instruction and research activities.
  11.  
  12. Listed here are certain responsibilities and the ethical behavior
  13. expected of you as a computer user.  The guidelines presented here
  14. reflect U.S. Copyright Law, the Law of the State of Missouri, and
  15. additional specific rules imposed by UMR Computing Services.  The
  16. Computer Center will try to keep current copies of the pertinent
  17. federal and state statutes on hand for your reference.

  20.                U.S. Copyright Law and Software Licensing
  21.  
  22. * All computer software is protected by the federal copyright law.
  23.  
  24. * Most of the software available in university facilities is
  25.   proprietary and is protected by legal licensing agreements in
  26.   addition to the copyright law.
  27.  
  28. * Special provision for copying may be granted by the copyright owner
  29.   and will be specified within the software package, documentation, or
  30.   license agreement.  Inspect these provisions carefully before making
  31.   any copies.

  33. * Under no circumstances should copyrighted software be distributed
  34.   outside the university through any mechanism, electronic or
  35.   otherwise.
  36.  
  37. * You are responsible for being aware of the licensing restrictions
  38.   for the software you use on any system.  Lack of knowledge does not
  39.   justify a violation of the law.
  40.  
  41. * When in doubt, don't copy.  Violation of copyright law or licensing
  42.   agreements may result in university disciplinary action and/or may
  43.   result in legal action.

  48. A state law makes unauthorized access and interference with computer
  49. systems, computer data, and other computer users illegal.
  50.  
  51. * Do not attempt to access any computer unless you are authorized.
  52.  
  53. * Protect your passwords.  You are responsible for unauthorized use of
  54.   your userid as well as for refraining from using someone else's
  55.   userid.
  56.  
  57. * Accessing the private computer files of others, even if those files
  58.   are unprotected, is illegal.
  59.  
  60. * Do not endanger or interfere with the operation of any computer
  61.   system.

  64.                          Additional UMR Rules
  65.  
  66. Always apply normal standards of academic ethics and polite conduct to
  67. your use of computing services.
  68.  
  69. * Respect the equipment and privacy of others.
  70.  
  71. * Drinks, food, tobacco smoke, and chewing tobacco are not allowed in
  72.   university computing facilities.
  73.  
  74. * University computing facilities may not be used for personal profit.
  75.  
  76. * Your computing activities should not interfere with the rights of
  77.   other users.  Examples of activities you should avoid:
  78.  
  79.   - tying up computer resources for game playing or trivial
  80.     applications,
  81.  
  82.   - sending annoying or obscene messages to any other user,
  83.  
  84.   - using computing systems for personal activities that are not
  85.     required for class of for research.
  86.  
  87.   - importing software of unknown function and quality.  This is the
  88.     primary mechanism for spreading viruses.
  89.  
  90. * In order to receive user support from the Computer Center or
  91.   vendors, you may be asked to produce the manuals, original
  92.   diskettes, serial number, or other proof of proper software
  93.   licensing.  In addition, vendors normally do not allow users of
  94.   questionable software to upgrade to a new version of the product.

  97.                          Disciplinary Action
  98.  
  99. Misuse of university computing facilities will be reported to the
  100. Director of Computing Services.  The Director can impose restrictions
  101. on the offender's computer access, report the incident to either the
  102. Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs or the Vice Chancellor of Academic
  103. Affairs (whichever is appropriate).  Please keep in mind that
  104. violation of U.S. or Missouri laws may result in legal action.

  107. Statutes.
