  93. To run Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools, your 
  94. computer must meet the following minimum requirements:
  95.  
  96. - A 486 with a 66 MHz (megahertz) processor (Pentium processor 
  97.     recommended)
  98.  
  99. - For Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98:
  100.   16 MB (megabytes) of RAM (random access memory) minimum
  101.  
  102. - For Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4.0:
  103.   32 MB of RAM minimum
  104.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  105.  
  106. - For Microsoft Windows(R) 2000:
  107.   64 MB of RAM minimum
  108.  
  109. - Minimal installation (browser only):

  128. Disk-Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 5.5 Installation
  129. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  130. Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools Setup installs the 
  131. majority of its files on the drive where the Windows operating 
  132. system is installed, regardless of the installation location you 
  133. chose. To free up space on your hard disk in order to meet the 
  134. Internet Explorer 5.5 disk-space installation requirements, 
  135. you must free up space on the drive where the Windows operating 
  136. system is installed.
  137.

  139. SETUP
  140. =====
  141.  
  142. Installing Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools
  143. ----------------------------------------------------
  144. Whether you choose to install over the network or download the 
  145. installation files to your hard disk, some or all of the Setup 
  146. files are copied to your hard disk. This allows you to reinstall 
  147. more quickly if necessary. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  148. you can remove the Setup directory as follows:
  149.  
  150. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click 
  151.    Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools. 
  152.  
  153. 2. Click Add/Remove, make sure the check box for Restore the Previous 
  154.    Windows Configuration is selected, and then click Advanced.
  155.  
  156. 3. Click the option named Remove Folder Containing Windows Update Setup 
  157.    Files, and then click OK. 
  158.  
  159. 4. When asked whether you want to continue, click Yes.
  160.  
  161. 5. Click OK in the next dialog boxes.
  162.  
  163. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools to or 
  164. run it from a network drive. However, you can download it to a network 
  165. drive. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  166. your computer; you cannot download Internet Explorer 5.5 to a UNC path.
  167.  
  168.  
  169. Running Internet Explorer 5.5 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  170. ----------------------------------------------------------
  171.  Note
  172.  You must have administrative privileges to install 
  173.  and uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes 
  174.  having administrative privileges the first time you 
  175.  start your computer after installing or uninstalling.
  176.  
  177. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  178. 5.5 and Internet Tools. This is also true for some add-on 
  179. components.
  180.  
  181. For corporate deployment on computers running Windows NT 4.0, 
  182. make sure you have the following free registry space:
  183.  
  184. - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 2.0 or 
  185.   Internet Explorer 3.x: at least 4 MB
  186. - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 4.x:
  187.   at least 2.5 MB 
  188.  
  189. If you're running Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows NT 4.0, 
  190. you must set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary 
  191. Internet Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission 
  192. so that files can be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  193.  
  194. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after you 
  195. install Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools, you must specify 
  196. when prompted that you do not want it to overwrite any files that 
  197. are newer. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps 
  198. to update the registry:
  199.  
  200. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  201.  
  202. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  203.  
  204.  
  205. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs over Internet Explorer 5.5 
  206. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  207. If you reinstall a Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack after Internet 
  208. Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools is installed on your computer, 
  209. some components will need to be re-registered. To do this, carry 
  210. out the following steps:
  211.  
  212. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  213.  
  214. 2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  215.    5.5 and Internet Tools.
  216.  
  217. 3. Click Add/Remove.
  218.  
  219. 4. Click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
  220.  
  221. 5. After the repair operation is complete, restart your computer.
  222.

  224. Installing over Windows 2000 Releases
  225. -------------------------------------
  226. Typical and Full installations are not currently available for Windows 2000. 
  227. Internet Explorer 5.5 will install a minimal set of files into your 
  228. system; this includes the Internet Explorer 5.5 Web browser and scripting 
  229. support. Other components such as Outlook Express are not available 
  230. for Windows 2000 at this time.

  233. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Before Upgrading to Windows 2000
  234. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  235. Windows 2000 contains an earlier version of Internet Explorer components.
  236. When upgrading from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT to Windows 2000, 
  237. we recommend that you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 before the upgrade.

  240. Downloading Internet Explorer using Third-Party Download Manager
  241. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  242. During the Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools installation, Setup 
  243. must download components from the Internet. If you are using third-party 
  244. download managers (for example, Netzip or GetRight) they will intercept 
  245. the download request. This will cause Setup to stop. To prevent this
  246. from occurring, first disable third-party download managers, and then run Setup.

  250. High Encryption Support For Internet Explorer 5.5 
  251. -------------------------------------------------
  252. High Encryption components are available on Windows 95, Windows 98,
  253. Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows NT 4.0. To obtain high 
  254. encryption support for Windows 2000, please visit Windows Update or
  255. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/default.asp

  258. Enhanced Encryption Strength
  259. ----------------------------
  260. Internet Explorer 5.5 now ships with standard encryption strength 
  261. of 128 bits and supports the U.S. government standard for data 
  262. encryption (DES). 128-bit Internet Explorer 5.5 is eligible 
  263. for distribution to all users worldwide except in U.S.-embargoed 
  264. destinations. For more information, visit the following Web site:

  268. Running Internet Explorer 5.5 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  269. --------------------------------------------------------------
  270. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.5 on a computer that is set up 
  271. to dual boot between two operating systems on the same partition 
  272. (for example, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0), and you have configured 
  273. the computer to share a single Program Files folder, you may have 
  274. problems with add-on components. 
  275.  
  276. Also, when you uninstall an add-on component from either copy of 
  277. Internet Explorer 5.5, it will be removed from both of them without 
  278. updating the other operating system's installed components information. 
  279.  
  280. These problems occur because the add-on files are all stored in the 
  281. shared Program Files folder, but information about installed add-on 
  282. components is stored elsewhere.
  283.  
  284.  
  285. Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update
  286. --------------------------------------------------
  287. To install or upgrade the Windows Desktop Update, you must install 
  288. Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 before you install Internet Explorer 5.5 
  289. and Internet Tools. 
  290.  
  291. If you have already installed Internet Explorer 5.5 and would like to 
  292. install the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following steps:
  293.  
  294. 1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 by using the procedure listed later 
  295.    in this document.
  296.  
  297. 2. If Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 is not already installed on 
  298.    your computer, install it.
  299.  
  300. 3. Install the Windows Desktop Update by using Add/Remove Programs 
  301.    in Control Panel.
  302.  
  303. 4. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools.
  304.  
  305.  
  306. Installing over Localized Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew Releases
  307. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  308. Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew versions require the corresponding 
  309. localized version of Internet Explorer 5.5. It is not possible to 
  310. install the English version of Internet Explorer over the localized 
  311. version of Windows 98. 
  312.  
  313. This restriction does not apply to localized versions of Windows 95 
  314. or Windows NT 4.0. However, you cannot install localized Arabic or 
  315. Hebrew Internet Explorer 5.5 over localized Windows 95 (only 
  316. English is supported). 
  317.  
  318.  
  319. Installing Outlook Express 5.x on Windows Terminal Server
  320. --------------------------------------------------------
  321. Before installing Outlook Express 5.x on Windows Terminal Server, 
  322. the administrator needs to set a compatibility flag in the registry 
  323. in order for the Outlook Express 5.x Setup program to work correctly. 
  324. To do this, carry out the following steps: 
  325.  
  326. 1. Create this registry key: 
  327.  
  328.  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\
  329.  Compatibility\Applications\setup50 
  330.  
  331. 2. Set the following value under the new setup50 key (this value 
  332. should be of type REG_DWORD): 
  333.  
  334.  Flags = 0x108
  335.  
  336.  
  337. Installing on Windows 98 with Novell IPX/IP Client
  338. --------------------------------------------------
  339. If you are using Novell IPX/IP client with Windows 98, you might 
  340. experience problems if you install Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet 
  341. Tools from the Internet. If Setup appears to become unresponsive, 
  342. restart your computer. Setup will continue and finish normally. To 
  343. work around this problem, try one of the following options:
  344.  
  345. - In Setup, select the Download Only option, and then run and install 
  346.   Internet Explorer 5.5 normally.
  347.  
  348. - Install Internet Explorer 5.5 from a CD-ROM.
  349.  
  350.  
  351. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools
  352. ------------------------------------------------------
  353. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools by 
  354. carrying out the following steps:
  355.  
  356. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  357.  
  358. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools, 
  359.    and then click Add/Remove.
  360.  
  361. 3. Click Restore the Previous Windows Configuration, and then 
  362.    click OK.
  363.  
  364. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  365.  
  366.  
  367. Uninstall for Previous Versions of Internet Explorer Unavailable
  368. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  369. If you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5, you will not be able to remove 
  370. the browser that was installed prior to Internet Explorer 5.5.
  371.  
  372.  
  373. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 Returns You to an Earlier Version
  374. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  375. When you install Internet Explorer 5.5, Setup examines your system
  376. for the presence of uninstall data that had been created by a previous 
  377. installation. If Setup cannot find this data, it creates new
  378. uninstall data for later use.
  379.  
  380. If you previously upgraded from Internet Explorer 4.x to 5.0 or 5.01,
  381. you will have uninstall data that allows you to roll back to Internet 
  382. Explorer 4.x. Unless you explicitly removed the uninstall data 
  383. using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before upgrading to Internet
  384. Explorer 5.5, this data will be preserved. When you uninstall 
  385. Internet Explorer 5.5, it will use the existing uninstall data and 
  386. roll back to Internet Explorer 4.x.
  387.  
  388. The following chart lists the various upgrade scenarios and the Internet 
  389. Explorer 5.5 uninstallation behavior that can occur in each case.

  408. Using Download only
  409. -------------------
  410. In Internet Explorer 5.5, if you select the Download Only option you will not 
  411. be able to choose which components are downloaded and which are not. All the 
  412. cabinet (.cab) files for a full installation for the operating system you choose 
  413. are downloaded. There is no user interface in Windows 2000 to select Download Only. 
  414.  
  415. To perform a Download Only on Windows 2000,  see the following article in

  420. Windows 2000 Upgrade Exception Pack
  421. -----------------------------------
  422. Internet Explorer 5.5 includes a component called the Windows 2000 Upgrade 
  423. Exception Pack.  This purpose of the Exception Pack is to downgrade 
  424. Internet Explorer 5.5 in preparation for upgrade to Windows 2000.  Until 
  425. the computer is upgraded to Windows 2000, the Exception Pack is not invoked.  
  426. During the installation of Windows 2000, the Exception Pack removes 
  427. Internet Explorer 5.5 registry keys that are no longer needed or contrary 
  428. to entries created by Windows 2000; this ensures a problem-free upgrade.

  431. Outlook Express Removed After Uninstalling Internet Explorer
  432. ------------------------------------------------------------
  433. After you uninstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.01 or 
  434. Outlook Express 5.5 from a computer running Windows 98 Second Edition, 
  435. the previous version of Outlook Express is not restored.  For more information

  442. =================
  443.  
  444. FTP User Interface and Functionality
  445. ------------------------------------
  446. If you discover an issue in the FTP user interface that blocks 
  447. FTP functionality, you can turn off this feature on the Advanced 
  448. tab in the Internet Options dialog box.
  449.  
  450. The following functionality is not supported:
  451.  
  452. - Internet connection via CERN or Web proxy servers.
  453. - Connecting to VAX or VMS FTP servers.
  454. - Using the browser from within a separate application or service.
  455. - Copying from server to server.
  456. - Drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste functionality from an FTP 
  457.   server is supported only on Windows 2000, Windows Me, and later.
  458.  
  459.  
  460. Font Display Issues
  461. -------------------
  462. If you run a non-Asian language version of Windows NT 4.0 and 
  463. you have installed many large fonts, the system's ability to use 
  464. those fonts may be exceeded. If Asian language Web pages are not 
  465. displayed correctly, install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5.
  466.  
  467.  
  468. Non-English Characters in URLs and Queries
  469. ------------------------------------------
  470. Internet Explorer 5.5 uses a new standard to transmit non-English addresses 
  471. (URLs) to the server. URLs are now encoded in a character encoding standard 
  472. named UTF-8. If the server is running Windows 2000, the URLs will work as 
  473. expected. Many servers cannot process URLs encoded in UTF-8. To use 
  474. non-English characters in URLs with these servers, carry out the following 
  475. steps:
  476.  
  477. 1. On the Tools menu in the browser, click Internet Options.
  478.  
  479. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  480.  
  481. 3. Under Browsing, clear the Always Send URLs As UTF-8 check box.
  482.  
  483. The query part of URLs is transmitted in a form fully compatible 
  484. with Internet Explorer 4 and above.
  485.  
  486.  
  487. Internet Explorer 4.x Compatibility Mode
  488. ----------------------------------------
  489. The Internet Explorer 4.x compatibility option is useful to Web 
  490. developers who want to view and test their Web sites on different 
  491. versions of Internet Explorer, using the same computer. You might
  492. not be able to change all settings for the browser while in this 
  493. mode. When using the compatibility option, you should change 
  494. Internet options via Control Panel, not through the Internet Options 
  495. command on the browser's Tools menu.
  496.  
  497.  
  498. Uninstalling Outlook Express 5.x 
  499. --------------------------------
  500. If you uninstall Outlook Express 5.x and you were previously running 
  501. Microsoft Internet Mail and News, you will be able to see only the 
  502. messages you received using Internet Mail and News. To view 
  503. Outlook Express 5.x messages, you must reinstall Outlook Express 5.x. 
  504.  
  505. If you uninstall Outlook Express 5.x and you were previously 
  506. running Outlook Express 4.x, you can view your Outlook Express 5.x 
  507. messages in version 4.x by carrying out the following steps: 
  508.  
  509. 1. On the File menu in Outlook Express, click Import, and then click Messages.
  510.  
  511. 2. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5.
  512.  
  513. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  514.  
  515.  
  516. Radio Toolbar
  517. -------------
  518. Internet Explorer 5.5 includes a Radio toolbar that allows streaming 
  519. radio playback over the Internet. By default, the toolbar is not displayed when 
  520. the browser is started. To display the toolbar whenever the browser is started, 
  521. carry out the following steps:
  522.  
  523. 1. On the Tools menu in the browser, click Internet Options.
  524.  
  525. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  526.  
  527. 3. Under Multimedia, select the check box labeled Always Show 
  528.    Internet Explorer (5.0 or Later) Radio Bar.
  529.  
  530.  
  531. Changing the Language of Menus and Dialog Boxes
  532. -----------------------------------------------
  533. Changing the language used in menus and dialog boxes might not work 
  534. with all display adapters. If you see blank menus or dialog boxes 
  535. after changing the language, try either of the following options:
  536.  
  537. - Change the resolution of your display adapter.
  538. - Upgrade the driver for your display adapter to a newer 
  539.   version. For information about updated drivers, contact 
  540.   the manufacturer of your display adapter.
  541.  
  542.  
  543. AutoComplete Options
  544. --------------------
  545. If you do not want AutoComplete to suggest matches for certain 
  546. sensitive items you have previously entered, you have several 
  547. options:
  548.  
  549. - To delete a specific AutoComplete entry, highlight it in the 
  550.   AutoComplete drop-down list, and then press DELETE.
  551.  
  552. - To delete a user name/password combination on a login page, 
  553.   delete the user name; the password will be deleted with it.
  554.  
  555. - To clear all form or password information, do the following:
  556.  
  557.   1. On the Tools menu in the browser, click Internet Options.
  558.  
  559.   2. Click the Content tab. 
  560.

  580. Setup will save your previous security settings and transfer 
  581. them to Internet Explorer 5.5 as a Custom Security Level.

  584. Contacts Missing in Address Book After Uninstalling Windows Me

  586. When uninstalling Windows Millennium Edition (Me), contacts that 
  587. you added while using Windows Me might be missing from the Windows 
  588. Address Book. When you upgrade to Windows Me, the Windows Address 
  589. Book data file is backed up.  During the uninstallation process, 
  590. the backup copy of the data file is restored, overwriting any data 
  591. that had been added in Windows Me.  To preserve any contacts made 
  592. in Windows Me, back up the .wab file(s) before uninstalling.  
  593. After Windows Me has been removed, the .wab file(s) can be 
  594. recopied back into place and used if Internet Explorer 5.01 
  595. or greater is installed.

  598. Outlook Express Title Screen Does Not Match Version

  600. When you start Outlook Express, the title screen indicates that 
  601. the product is "Microsoft Outlook Express 5" even though you 
  602. installed a later version of Outlook Express. The title screen 
  603. only reflects major product versions, such as version 4 or 5. 
  604. Versions 5.01 and 5.5 are considered minor upgrades.

  658. problems.

  661. HTML Buttons with Unselectable Attribute

  663. When the "unselectable" attribute in Internet Explorer 5.5 is applied 
  664. to buttons, the default onclick action (depressing the button) doesn't 
  665. take place. A simple workaround is to add a behavior to buttons that 
  666. causes this action. Add the following to the top of the file containing 
  667. the unselectable buttons (or to a CSS stylesheet that's referenced 
  668. from the  file):

  683. Task Scheduler in Windows NT 4.0
  684. --------------------------------
  685. Windows NT 4.0 included an old version of the Schedule service, 
  686. also known as At service (Atsvc.exe). Internet Explorer 5.5 
  687. upgrades it to the new version of the Schedule service, named 
  688. Task Scheduler (MSTask.exe) and converts At jobs to Scheduled 
  689. Tasks.

  691. With the old At service, all At jobs had to run in the same 
  692. account as the service itself. The default account for the 
  693. service was the Local System account, but it could be changed 
  694. to another user account as needed. Some Windows NT 4.0 users 
  695. changed the At service's account because they needed their jobs 
  696. to run in a user account. 
  697.  
  698. With Task Scheduler, each scheduled task can be configured to 
  699. run in a different account. The Task Scheduler service itself 
  700. has to run in the Local System account.
  701.  
  702. For backward compatibility, Task Scheduler allows the user to 
  703. set one account to use when running scheduled tasks that were 
  704. created from At jobs. When Internet Explorer 5.5 is installed, 
  705. this account is set to the Local System account. If you are 
  706. running Windows NT 4.0 and you change the account that the At 
  707. service ran in to something other than the Local System account, 
  708. then after installing Internet Explorer 5.5 you need to manually 
  709. re-enter the user name and password for that account. To do this, 
  710. go to the Scheduled Tasks folder, click the Advanced menu, and then 
  711. click AT Service Account.

  713. This must be done manually because Internet Explorer 5.5 Setup 
  714. cannot decrypt the password that was used by the At service.

  722. In Internet Explorer 5.0, if a user made a selection inside an iframe 
  723. and then clicked outside of the iframe, then in the contining document, 
  724. the selection inside the iframe would remain selected. In

  726. user clicks outside of it.
