  5. NAME
  6.        antiword - show the text and images of MS Word documents
  7.  
  8. SYNOPSIS
  9.        antiword [ options ] wordfiles
  10.  
  11. DESCRIPTION
  12.        Antiword  is  an  application  that displays the text and the images of
  13.        Microsoft Word documents.
  14.        A wordfile named - stands for a Word document read  from  the  standard
  15.        input.
  16.        Only  documents  made  by  MS Word version 2 and version 6 or later are
  17.        supported.
  18.  
  19. OPTIONS
  20.        -a papersize
  21.               Output in Adobe PDF form. Printable on paper  of  the  specified
  22.               size:  10x14,  a3, a4, a5, b4, b5, executive, folio, legal, let-
  23.               ter, note, quarto, statement or tabloid.

  25.        -f     Output in formatted text form. That  means  that  bold  text  is
  26.               printed  like *bold*, italics like /italics/ and underlined text
  27.               as _underlined_.

  29.        -h     Give a help message.
  30.  
  31.        -i image level
  32.               The image level determines how images will be shown.
  33.  
  34.               0: Use non-standard extensions from Ghostscript. This output may
  35.                  not print on any PostScript printer, but is useful in case no
  36.                  hard copy is needed. It is also useful  when  Ghostscript  is
  37.                  used  as  a  filter  to  print  a  PostScript  file to a non-
  38.                  PostScript printer.

  40.               1: Show no images.
  41.  
  42.               2: PostScript level 2 compatible. (default)
  43.  
  44.               3: PostScript level 3 compatible. (EXPERIMENTAL,  Portable  Net-
  45.                  work Graphics (PNG) images are not printed correctly)

  47.        -m mapping file
  48.               This  file is used to map Unicode characters to your local char-
  49.               acter set.  The default mapping file depends on the locale.

  51.        -p papersize
  52.               Output in PostScript form. Printable on paper of  the  specified
  53.               size:  10x14,  a3, a4, a5, b4, b5, executive, folio, legal, let-
  54.               ter, note, quarto, statement or tabloid.

  56.        -r     Include text removed by the revisioning system.
  57.  
  58.        -s     Include text with the so-called "hidden text" attribute.
  59.  
  60.        -t     Output in text form. (default)
  61.  
  62.        -w width
  63.               In text mode this is the line width in characters.  A  value  of
  64.               zero puts an entire paragraph on a line, useful when the text is
  65.               to used as  input  for  another  wordprocessor.  This  value  is
  66.               ignored in PostScript mode.

  68.        -x document type definition
  69.               Output  in XML form. Currently the only document type definition
  70.               is db (for DocBook).

  72.        -L     In PostScript mode: use landscape mode.

  74. FILES
  75.        Mapping files like 8859-1.txt
  76.               Antiword looks for its mapping files in  three  directories,  in
  77.               the order given:
  78.               (1) The directory specified by $ANTIWORDHOME
  79.               (2) The directory specified by $HOME/.antiword
  80.               (3) Directory /usr/share/antiword
  81.  
  82.        The fontnames file
  83.               Antiword will look for its fontname file in the same directories
  84.               as used for the mapping files.
  85.               The fontnames file contains  the  translation  table  from  font
  86.               names used by MS Word to font names used by PostScript.

  88.        NOTE:
  89.               Antiword cannot tell the difference between a file that does not
  90.               exist and a file that cannot be opened for reading.

  92. ENVIRONMENT
  93.        Antiword uses the environment variable ``ANTIWORDHOME''  as  the  first
  94.        directory to look for its files. Antiword uses the environment variable
  95.        ``HOME'' to find the user's home directory. When in text mode  it  uses
  96.        the  variable  ``COLUMNS'' to set the width of the output (unless over-
  97.        ridden by the -w option).

  99.        Antiword uses the environment variables  ``LC_ALL'',  ``LC_CTYPE''  and
  100.        ``LANG'' (in that order) to get the current locale and uses this infor-
  101.        mation to select the default mapping file.

  103. BUGS
  104.        Antiword is far from complete. Many features are  still  missing.  Many
  105.        images  are not shown yet. Some of the images that are shown, are shown
  106.        in the wrong place.  PostScript output is only available in ISO  8859-1
  107.        and ISO 8859-2.
