  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  41. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  42. =====================================================================

  44.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  45.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  46.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.

  103. I. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95

  106.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  107.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  108.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  109.     for the December 31 definition set.

  114. II. Norton AntiVirus 2000 (6.0) and 2001 for Windows 95/98/2000

  117.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  118.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  119.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  120.     for the December 31 definition set.

  124. III. Norton AntiVirus 7.x Corporate Edition 
  125. =====================================================================

  127.  1. Run the file mmddx86.EXE (or mmddx861.EXE if using the
  128.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  129.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231x86.EXE
  130.     for the December 31 definition set.
  131.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  135. IV. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1x
  136. =====================================================================
  137.  
  138.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  139.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  140.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  141.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  142.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  143.  
  144.  This patch is available on the Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), 
  145.  the Symantec Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  146.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  147.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  148.  
  149.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  150.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause them to report false virus 
  151.  detections. 
  152.  
  153.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  154.  to extract the necessary files. Then follow the directions in the 
  155.  READ.ME file. This patch contains the April 1997 virus definition 
  156.  set. After applying this patch, you must update the virus definition 
  157.  set.
  158.  
  159.  Updating NAV 4.0 virus definition files using Windows 3.1x
  160.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  161.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  162.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  163.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  164.     December 31 definition set. 
  165.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  166.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  167.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  168.     critical files.
  169.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  170.     definitions.
  171.  
  172.  Updating NAV 4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  173.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  174.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  175.     from the File menu.
  176.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  177.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  178.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  179.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  180.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  181.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  182.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  183.     December 31 definition set. 
  184.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  185.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  186.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  187.     critical files.
  188.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  189.     definitions.

  191.  Troubleshooting
  192.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  193.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  194.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  195.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  196.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  197.  empty before starting the update.

  201. V. NT Tools, NT Scanner for Windows NT
  202. =====================================================================
  203.  
  204.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  205.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  206.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  207.     December 31 definition set. 
  208.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  209.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  210.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild

  217. VI. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT

  228. VII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  229. =====================================================================
  230.  
  231.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  232.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  233.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  234.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it 
  235.  is, you must update it with the UPDATEME.EXE patch before installing 
  236.  these definitions. These new virus definitions are not compatible 
  237.  with older versions of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report 
  238.  false virus detections.

  246.  directory. The network files must exist in your local directory or 
  247.  the UPDATEME.EXE patch will not extract the network files. Copy 
  248.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  249.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  250.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  251.  
  252.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  253.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  254.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  255.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  256.  
  257.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  258.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  259.  the program update.
  260.  
  261.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  262.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  263.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  264.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  265.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  266.     drive.
  267.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  268.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  269.  3. Type mmddI16.EXE [path] (or mmddI161.EXE [path] if using the
  270.     multi-disk floppy disk set) where the [path] is the location of
  271.     the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager that you just mapped. The
  272.     mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the
  273.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  274.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  275.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  276.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  277.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  278.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  279.     directory.
  280.  
  281.  
  282. =====================================================================
  283. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  284. =====================================================================
  285.  
  286.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  287.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  288.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  289.       directory.
  290.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  291.       extract the appropriate files.
  292.  
  293.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  294.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  295.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  296.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  297.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  298.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  299.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  300.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  301.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  302.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  303.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  304.     definitions directory. 
  305.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  306.         the definitions. 
  307.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  308.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  309.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  310.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  311.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  312.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  313.  
  314.  
  315.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  316.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  317.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  318.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  319.     mapped drive.
  320.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network 
  321.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  322.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE 
  323.     for the December 31 definition set.
  324.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  325.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  326.     Updater program.
  327.  4. To update definitions type mmddI32 /DUMP 
  328.  5. Delete mmddI32.EXE from the definitions directory.
  329.  
  330.

  332. IX. Norton System Center
  333. =====================================================================
  334.  
  335.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  336.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  337.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  338.  
  339.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  340.  
  341.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  342.     installation. By default the location is the 
  343.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  344.  
  345.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  346.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  347.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  348.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  349.  
  350.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  351.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  352.     documentation.
  353.  
  354.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  355.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  356.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  357.  
  358.

  360. X. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  361. =====================================================================
  362.  
  363. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  364. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  365.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  366. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  367.    definitions.

  370. XI. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  371. =====================================================================
  372.  
  373. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  374. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  375.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  376. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  377.    definitions.

  380. XII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  381. =====================================================================
  382.  
  383.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  384.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  385.  these instructions carefully.
  386.  
  387. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  388.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  389.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  390.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  391. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  392.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  393.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  394.    for the December 31 definition set.
  395. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  396. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  397.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  398.  
  399. =====================================================================
  400. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Firewalls
  401. =====================================================================
  402.  
  403.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  404.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  405.  these instructions carefully.
  406.  
  407. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  408.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Firewalls" in the
  409.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  410.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  411. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /fw". Remember the
  412.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  413.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  414. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  415. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  416.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.

  419. XIV. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes for AS/400
  420. =====================================================================
  421.  
  422.  1. Download the file as400.zip to a PC that is able to connect to 
  423.     the AS400 server.
  424.  2. Unzip this file to a temporary location on the PC.
  425.  3. From the temporary location on the PC, use FTP to connect to the
  426.     AS400 server.  Log in as QSECOFR, or a user that has *ALLOBJ 
  427.     authority.
  428.  4. Change to Binary transfer mode. 
  429.  5. Put the files into the Incoming directory: 
  430.      /SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING
  431.  6. From the AS/400 console issue the command:
  432.      CHGOWN OBJ('/SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING/*') NEWOWN(QNOTES) 
  433.     to change the owner of all the files to QNOTES.
  434.  7. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new definitions 
  435.     within 10 minutes.
  436.     
  437. =====================================================================
  438. XV. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes for OS/390
  439. =====================================================================
  440.  
  441.  1. Download the file s390.zip to a PC that is able to connect to the OS/390 server.
  442.  2. Unzip this file to a temporary location on the PC.
  443.  3. From the temporary location on the PC, use FTP to connect to the OS/390 
  444.      server.  Log in as your domino server user.
  445.  4. Change to Binary transfer mode. 
  446.  5. Put the files into the Incoming directory: 
  447.      (Your Install Location)/Symantec/virusdefs/incoming
  448.  6. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new definitions 
  449.     within 10 minutes.

  452. XVI. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  453. =====================================================================
  454.  
  455.  If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  456.  definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  457.  extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  458.  to the virus definitions folder. 
  459.  
  460.  Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  461.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  462.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  463.     or mmddI32.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  464.  
  465.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  466.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  467.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  468.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  469.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  470.  
  471.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  472.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  473.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  474.     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  475.  
  476.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  477.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
  478.     it is not loaded last, it may cause errors.
  479.  
  480.  4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  481.     on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
