- Welcome to Fracscape
- --------------------
-
- Fracscape is a Landscape Design, Generation and Modeling package for the
- Amiga series of machines, written by Lee Bull. This Public Domain Disk
- contains just one module from the full Fracscape package ie.
- the 3D modeler module.
-
-
-
-
- The Full Fracscape Package
- --------------------------
-
- The complete package is finised and may be released onto PD at some time
- in the future. Here are some features :
-
-
- * Landscape CAD system
- --------------------
- This program is a CAD style system allowing the Designing of landscapes
- by designing contours, with infinite zoom etc. Just frame the area to be
- generated, and set the resolution and save the information in a file to
- be processed by the Generator module.
-
- * Landscape Generator
- -------------------
- This takes files from the designer and outputs Fracscape DEM format
- landscape files, at the resolution/size specified in the designer. The
- files are generated in real-time, so the size of the landscape is limited
- only by size of disk/hard-drive/ram: and user's patience.
-
- * Fractal Interpolator
- --------------------
- Provides a virtual system of quickly expanding designed landscapes or
- increasing the resolution of survey DEM files.
-
- * Mandelbrot & Julia set landscape generator
- ------------------------------------------
- A Mandelbrot & Julia set generator capable of 2nd, 3rd & 4th order
- calculations. The user can save an unfinished generation, and continue
- it at a later date. The generator is capable of outputting Mandelbrots
- & julias as smoothed Fracscape DEM landscape files, at any specified
- dimensions.
-
- * Output of any Fracscape file to Vista Format
- --------------------------------------------
- A utility to convert Fracscape DEM files to Vista DEM files.
-
- * 3D Modeler
- ----------
- A modeler, similar to vista. This allows visualization of landscapes
- up to 513x513 using a scrolling system, in a vista style interface.
- Also allows visualization of colour-map. Landscapes of any resolution/size
- can be rendered using virtual processing. DEMs can be installed in memory
- for reduced rendering times.
- Images can be rendered in Low-Resolution 32 colour images only.
- Support for script files to allow batch rendering for animations.
-
-
-
-
-
- A Brief History
- ---------------
-
- The Fracscape Package was written as an A-Level project in about 3 weeks
- and was written using AMOS. Since that first version, I have made a few small
- alterations and improvements, but not many. The entire source code totals
- around 2MB. A 1500 page manual was written for A-Level submission, detailing
- how Fracscape was designed and written. I did the algorithms off the
- top of me brain, but if your interested, Good books are:
-
- Fundamentals of Interactive Graphics (Addison-Wesley)
- Dynamical Systems & Fractals (duno. Femi`s borrowed the book)
- The Science of Fractal Images (Springer-Verlag)
-
- Its been sitting around for a year doing nothing, so its time to put it on PD.
- I am now studying for an Honours Degree in computing at Queen Mary
- and Westfield college, London University.
-
-
-
- Whats On the Disk ?
- -------------------
-
- The 3D modeler is compiled and one the disk, along with a directory of
- example IFF images generated using fracscape. two other DOC files accompany
- this one, and are in the DOC directory :
-
- Instructions.DOC
- FileSpec.DOC
-
- To see the example pictures type :
-
- Execute fracscape_v1.0:Show_Examples
-
- after the program has been quitted or at a workbench shell.
-
- In the example pictures, I mainly used survey DEM files, as published by
- Virtual Reality Labs for the Vista series. They are much better than
- fractal landscapes, and are mainly what fracscape was written to use. If you
- are wondering how to do this yourself, well i`m very sorry, but they were
- ripped using my custom ripper program which I am not going to release onto
- the Public Domain. Copyright reasons stop me from releasing the Vista DEMs
- onto the PD scene in Fracscape format. Even though the data itself is
- Public Domain from the US Government, it costs a hell of a lot to get these
- files from the government and I am sure I will be sued right left and up
- my backside. I am however, looking into getting raw survey data myself from
- sources that would not mind what I did with it.
-
- If anyone has any survey data in grid format on a disk of any type, that
- they would not mind being used, or even better, if you have converted it to
- Fracscpae format, please get in touch with me, as I would like it myself,
- and would like to distribute some on PD.
-
-
-
- Contacting Me
- -------------
-
- If for any reason, you should wish to contact me, feel free to write to the
- following address :
-
- Lee Bull,
- 263, Archway Rd,
- Highgate,
- London, N6 5AS
- England.
-
- or alternatively, you can E-MAIL me on :
-
- fractal@qmw.ac.uk
-
- Send any bugs, pics, animations, landscapes etc. especially survey data.
-
- I don't mind technical questions, suggestions or comments as long as they
- are not too stupid. If you want an answer, remember to enclose a
- stamped addressed envelope.
-
-
-
- Distribution
- ------------
-
- Feel free to distribute this software to friends. I ask only, that the
- document files are included with the software, and that the software is
- not used for any financial benifit to anyone, other than PD libraries
- who have got to earn a living and do a good job.
-
-
-
- The Future
- ----------
-
- There may be future updates of Fracscape, though Im not certain. It is much
- more likely that I will be writing a much bigger rendering package in C, which
- will be 24-bit, commercial, and should wipe the floor with Vista.
-
- Any updates to Fracscape may include :
-
- * Clouds (already done it actually, but needs 2 32 col images gelled
- into HAM. See the Grand Canyon Example on this disk.)
-
- * Vista DEM read compatibility. I can only do this if I spend a
- while decoding Vista's DEM write compression system, or they
- send me the specs for it (which they wouldn't do last time).
-
- * Brownian Motion DEM Generator (already done this too, but the results
- look a bit naff really)
-
- * Spectral Synthesis (fourier filtering). When I get a faster processer
- for my cerebral hemesphere and a 64 bit cortex to understand it.
-
- * Smoothing facilities (when I can think of a decent algorithm. If
- anyone out there knows anything about this can they contact me !).
-
-
- Ive done a few 3MB animations using it too. Im a bit naff at artistry, so
- they are not really good enough for the PD anim scene. If I do manage to
- do some good ones I might though.
-
-
- And Last, A few Thanx & Stuff:
- ------------------------------
-
- Thanx to Virtual Reality Labs for the Vista series & such good service. If
- you like this program, please buy VistaPro. (Do it direct from the states,
- its much cheaper).
-
- And thanks to my Granny & Grandad for supplying cups of tea at regular 15
- minute intervals to keep me awake. This product was brought to you by
- Lee Bull in accociation with caffeen, Peroni Beer, and serious pizzas &
- Public Enemy on the Hifi.
-
- If you like the landscape piccies output by Fracscape, try getting away from
- a screen and looking at some real ones, they`re much more believable, and
- in real-time too.
-
- Well done to Francois Lionet & Europress for Amos. It is good, but please
- try to improve your debugging. (I know mine's bad, but this aint commercial).
-
- No Thanx to Commodore UK, the crappiest business people on Earth.
