- Ami-Back is a state-of-the-art hard disk drive backup utility for the
- Commodore Amiga line of personal computers. Ami-Back makes the job of
- backing up hard drive data quick and easy to do! Included with Ami-Back is
- Ami-Sched, a scheduling program that directs Ami-Back to perform backups
- without user interaction.
-
- This DEMO is of the version of Ami-Back written for users of AmigaDOS
- 1.3. When you purchase Ami-Back, you will get both the 1.3 and 2.0
- versions on the same disk. That way, if you should move up to AmigaDOS
- 2.0, you won't have to go through any upgrade hassles!
-
- USING DEMO
-
- 1) Copy program to your hard drive; preferably to the sys:tools
- directory.
- 2) Execute the program either from SHELL or from WorkBench using the
- icon.
- 3) Set up the backup configuration (see menus). Save your
- configuration. You should set up the Program Configuration also.
- The log file, index file(s), and File Exclusion Filter all default to
- the sys:s directory.
- 4) Most of program functions should be self explanatory. There are no
- docs included with the DEMO version. A detailed manual is included
- when you purchase Ami-Back.
- 5) You will be able to perform backups to floppies, removable hard
- drives, and/or hard drive partitions, and SCSI Tape drives.
-
- NOTE: Applied Engineering's driver for the High Density Floppy drive
- currently does not work under Kickstart version 36.314. AE is
- working to correct this problem.
-
- General Information:
-
- 1) Backs up any Amiga hard drive to any AmigaDOS compatible device such
- as:
-
- Floppies (conventional or high density)
- Removable media hard drive(s)
- Fixed media hard drive
- SCSI Tape drive
- AmigaDOS File or device
-
- 2) System Requirements:
-
- - Any Amiga Computer A500/A2000/A2500/A3000
- - Requires AmigaDOS 1.3 (for this version)
-
- 3) Installation:
-
- - Installation program is provided to install the Ami-Back/Ami-Sched
- programs on the users hard drive, and update the Ami-Back.config file
- of their location.
-
- 4) Technical Support:
-
- - Technical support will be provided to REGISTERED OWNERS of Ami-Back
- via Phone, BBS, BIX, and GEnie. Phone numbers and accounts are listed
- in the owner's manual and in the "about" screen of the program.
-
- Features:
-
- Scheduler:
-
- 1) Includes versatile scheduler similar in concept to the UNIX cron
- program, but with a sophisticated, easy-to-use graphical interface.
-
- 2) Allows unattended backups based on user defined intervals. (Types:
- Complete, Incr by Date, Incr by Archive Bit)
-
- 3) Especially useful for users with tape drives or removable media.
-
- 4) Configured within the main backup program.
-
- 5) Runs in background. Can be initiated from Shell or Workbench icon.
-
- 6) "Multi-tasking friendly." Uses virtually no system resources.
-
- Backups:
-
- 1) User-interface of the 1.3 version designed to operate like the
- Workbench 2.0 interface.
-
- 2) Configuration files:
-
- a) For creating and storing user defined options for scheduling,
- backups and restorations. Also used to define locations of support
- files.
- b) Superb flexibility with total user control.
-
- 3) Size of backups are virtually unlimited.
-
- 4) Backup Types:
-
- a) Complete (entire device and/or directories)
- b) Incremental (by date, archive bit)
- c) Selective (hierarchical inclusion or exclusion by file or directory)
-
- 5) File exclusion filter:
-
- Allows exclusion of files during all types of backups using AmigaDOS
- wildcard metacharacters. Up to 100 exclusion conditions are allowed
- simultaneously.
-
- 6) Allows setting of archive bit during backup.
-
- 7) True verify mode during backups. Re-reads data from backup media and
- compares it with source data to ensure integrity of backup.
-
- Restores:
-
- 1) Restore Types:
-
- a) Complete (entire device and/or directories)
- b) Selective (hierarchical inclusion or exclusion by file or directory)
-
- 2) Allows user to restore to previous directory hierarchy from the backup
- or to a single user specified device/directory.
-
- 3) Allows user to control protection bits or use original bits (by
- default).
-
- 4) Allows user to specify current system date or retain original file
- dates (by default) from backup.
-
- 5) Duplicate file detection:
-
- a) Write-Over (overwrites existing files)
- b) Skip-Over (restores only files not found on target device)
- c) Re-Name (allows user to rename the files restored from backup which
- are found on the target device)
-
- Special Features:
-
- 1) Compare:
-
- Located on the restore configuration screen, this feature allows the
- user compare the data stored in the last backup and the data currently
- on the target device. Compare maybe used in the event of suspected or
- real hard drive corruption to check for lost or damaged files.
-
- 2) Log file:
-
- Logs all tasks performed by scheduler and errors detected during
- background backup operations.
-
- 3) Index File:
-
- Indices are stored for each backup. Index naming scheme includes:
- device backed up, type of backup, date of backup, and sequence number
- if needed.
-
- 4) Back-Tracking:
-
- During backup, if a defective destination floppy is detected, the
- program will allow the user to replace the defective media and resume
- the backup without interruption.
-
- Performance Tests:
-
- Test Machine Configuration:
-
- Amiga 3000/25-50
- 6 Mbytes Ram
-
- Program Test Configuration and results:
-

- These results represent only one of the many configurations Ami-Back
- has been tested with. SCSI controllers tested include: Commodore
- A2091, GVP Series I and II, and Microbotics Hardframe. Ami-Back will
- also work with the Commodore A2090A for backups to floppies and
- hard drives. The A2090A does not work well or at all with tape drives
- tested.
