If the control panel window is still active from the previous step,
double left click on the 'network' icon. If it is not, from the start
menu select settings and control panel to get to this point.
There should be a window stating that 'The following Network components
are installed'. Examine this to see what sort of networking is already
installed on your computer. If the window is blank, continue.
If you have a network card in your computer, there may already be things
in the window.
If you are on a Local Area Network, you should contact your system
administrator about setting up your computer for both LAN and dialup
networking usage.
Click on the 'Add' button below the installed components window.
Double left click on the 'Adapter' icon.
Under Manufacturer in the left display window, select 'Microsoft' by

You should leave the other windows, 'Bindings, Advanced and WINS
configuration blank. If you enable their capabilities, RAIN will not
work correctly.
Click the 'OK' button at the bottom of the window to finish up this step.
Now click on the 'OK' button again at the bottom of the 'Network' window.
Windows should now ask you if it is ok to restart the computer so that
changes can take effect. You need to reboot your machine at this point.
*****************STEP IV: Connecting to RAIN**********************
When the machine is back up, close the control panel window and double
left click on the 'My Computer' Icon, or the icon that resembles your
computer, usually at the very top left of your desktop.
When the window that contains the floppy disk drive, the hard disk drive,
and any other drives attached to your computer comes up, if the previous
instructions have been completed there should be a folder here by the
name of 'Dial-Up Networking'.
Double left click on the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder.
In the new Dial-Up Networking window, there should be an Icon labeled
'Make New Connection'. Double left click on this icon
In the field 'Type a name for the computer you are dialing' enter Rain.
In the field 'Select a modem:' there should appear the designation of
your modem. This may appear as the brand name or the speed of the modem
and whether or not it is external or internal. As long as it is
recognized, it's fine.
Click on the 'Next>' button.
Under phone number, insert the appropriate information about area code
and then put in the phone number of the Rain local dialup for your area.
These numbers are:
Ventura, Ojai, Camarillo and Oxnard:
650-5354 for 14.4 access,
650-5379 for 28.8 access.
Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpenteria, Isla Vista and Montecito:
899-8600 for 14.4 access
882-2260 for 28.8 access.
Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Agoura Hills, Conejo Valley,
Newbury Park, Northridge and Westlake Village:
230-2300 All speeds
Santa Maria:
348-3500 All speeds
Solvang:
686-2516 All speeds
Santa Paula:
659-1209 All speeds
San Luis Obispo:
781-7660 All speeds
Click on the 'Next>' button at the bottom of the window.
In the next window, if the previous entries are correct, click on the
'Finish' button. If incorrect, click the 'back' button and correct them.
You should now be at the Dial-Up Networking window again, with the new
Rain icon present.
Left click once on the newly made 'Rain' icon and hold down on the mouse
button while dragging the mouse pointer to the background desktop. This
should look like a transparent copy of the 'Rain' icon acting as the
mouse cursor, which you should move to t he desktop near your other icons
and then release the mouse button. The computer will ask you 'You cannot
move or copy this item to this location. Do you want to create a
shortcut to the item instead?' You should click the 'Yes' button.
An icon for Rain should now appear on your desktop. When you wish to
connect to Rain, you need only double left click upon that icon to
connect. The first time you do this, it will bring up a window asking
you for some information.
In the User Name: field, you need to put in ppp:userid where userid is
the account name you signed up for Rain with. This is the same as your
email address, but without the @rain.org part of it. If your userid was
trevor, you would put ppp:trevor in the window. The ppp: is very
important and you will not be able to log onto Rain without it. Note:
the ppp:userid must be in all lower case letters and without any spaces,
as should the password.
In the Password field, simply enter the password you gave when you signed
up for Rain. If you are the only user of the computer and are not
concerned with security, you should click a check into the 'Save
password' box, and it automatically save the info information for future
logins.
If the phone number that appears is correct, you need simply click the
'connect' button to connect to rain. Note: You must achieve a
successful connection before the Dial up adapter will save the settings
used.
****************STEP V: Getting Netscape/Explorer*******************
When you have completed the previous steps and are connected to RAIN, if
you don't already have a working copy of Netscape on your computer you
will need to download one. Provided with your membership should be a
disk with the folder "Ws_ftp95" on it. Move this folder to your hard
drive and double left on the blue icon for ws_ftp.exe. When the session
profile window comes up, simply click on 'Ok' to establish a connection
to RAIN.
Once you are connected, a list of files should appear in the
right hand window. To copy one of these files from our server to your
local hard drive, simply select the file you wish to download and either
double click on it or else high light i t with a single click and then
click on the arrow pointing towards the left. Either method will
initiate a file transfer. At this point, you should locate and double
click on the file named 'n32e301p.exe'. This is the latest version of
Netscape for Win windows95 and will take approximately 60 minutes to
transfer at 14.4k baud or 30 minutes at 28.8k baud. If you prefer
Microsoft Internet Explorer, you should select the file 'msie301r.exe'
instead of 'n32e301p.exe'. It is RAIN's opinion that they are both
excellent programs, and we cannot recommend one over the other for
functionality, instead we leave it entirely up to your preference.
If you desire the 'Eudora' email program, you may also download
it at this time by double clicking on it to transfer it to your computer,
however the mail clients provided with either Netscape Navigator or
Microsoft Explorer are excellent so this s is more of a preference than a
necessary componant.
Now that you have the files on your desktop, you need simply
double left click on them to install them using their own setup routines.
The final thing that needs to be done before your internet setup is
complete is to set up your web browser f or use with RAIN. For Netscape,
you need simply choose the options menu and select 'mail and news
preferences'. The outgoing and incoming mail server needs to be set to
'mail.rain.org' and the pop3 username should be your login
identification. For Microsoft Explorer, select mail, then select the
'mail' menu and select 'options'. Click on the 'servers' tab and input
the information. Outgoing and Incoming mail should be set to
'mail.rain.org' while pop3 account should be your user identification.
If you experience problems with these directions, you can request
technical support from RAIN by sending an email to help@rain.org. Please
remember to include your operating system, the problem you are having and
any error messages that are relative to the problem. If you are unable
to send or receive email, you may call 899-4695 between 12-5pm Monday
through Saturday and request technical support. Some days Techinical
support is not in the office, but if you leave a message your call will
be re turned as soon as possible.
