1. Download the file rainsock.exe from the directory /usr/local/win at
RAIN. Note: this
is not the same as the rainsock.zip file that you may have seen elsewhere on RAIN.
2. Create a directory called c:\trumpet (where 'c' is the name of your hard
drive).
3. Move rainsock.exe into c:\trumpet.
4. Run rainsock.exe.
5. Modify the path line in your autoexec.bat to contain a reference to the
c:\trumpet directory.
e.g. path c:\dos;c:\windows;c:\trumpet
6. Restart your computer. Start Windows.
7. From the Program Manager, go to the File menu. Select New. Select 'new
program item' from the dialog box that comes up. From the next dialog box,
select 'Browse'. Page through your directories until you reach the
c:\trumpet directory. Select tcpman.exe. Click 'OK'. Click 'OK' again. A
new TCPMAN icon will have been created.
8. Double click the TCPMAN icon.
9. From the Dialler menu, select '1 Setup.cmd'. A series of four dialog
boxes will come up one after the other. Answer each question in turn,
clicking 'OK' after answering each question. The default modem init string,
at&f&c1&k3s7=60, works extremely well for most modems. If it doesn't
work with your particular modem, refer to your modem manual for the correct
initialization string.
10. Select Setup from the File menu. A dialog box will come up. In the SLIP
Port text box, enter your the number of the com port on which your modem is
installed. The default is com 2. Now enter your baud rate. The default is 57600.
If your modem supports V.42 compression, multiply your modem speed by four
to get your baud rate. Click 'OK'. Close Trumpet Winsock. Re-open TCPMAN.
TCPMAN will automatically start dialling when you open it. Hit the ESC key if
you want it to stop dialing.
11. Your c:\trumpet directory contains a file called ftp_zip.exe. Create a directory
for this file, and place the file in its new directory. Run ftp_zip.exe. This will place
several new files in the directory, including one called ws_ftp.exe. Return to the
Program Manager, and create a new program item for ws_ftp.exe (just as you did
for TCPMAN.EXE). Use this program to get files from other computers on the
Internet.
12. iIf you are not already logged in, from the Dialler menu, select Login. Trumpet
will dial RAIN's phone number for you. If RAIN is busy, Trumpet will redial every
few seconds until the Sun turns into a red giant and engulfs the earth in flame.
13. To end your session, select Bye from the Dialler menu.
14. Between 12 and 13 above, have loads and loads of fun.
15. E-mail me if you need additional assistance.
