  30. What This Diskette Does
  31. -----------------------
  32.  
  33. The System Program Service Diskette given here can update the system
  34. program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions,
  35. or expand functions. The supported models are as follows.

  37.    - ThinkPad 560
  38.  
  39. To determine if you have to update the system program or not, please
  40. refer to the "Summary of Change" section.

  95.  - (Fix) A small amount (8KB) of data could be overwritten and lost

  99.          - There is data present on the last cylinder of the Hard

  101.          - The ThinkPad actually enters Hibernation mode by pressing
  102.            Fn-F12 or by customized power management options.

  104.         NOTE:  - The problem does not occur when creating the Hibernation
  105.                  file.
  106.                - It only occurs when the ThinkPad actually enters
  107.                  Hibernation mode.
  108.                - Only 2.1GB Hard Disk has this problem.  There is no
  109.                  problem with other hard disks currently available from
  110.                  IBM.

  112.  - (Fix) Customized Typematic rate is reset at the Hibernation
  113.          wake-up time.
  114.  
  115.  - (Fix) When the ESS Audio base address is set to 240H, audio function
  116.          test in the Easy-Setup menu returns "150-31 ERROR" message
  117.          even when there is no hardware failure detected.

  121. Hard Disk Password  <New Function>
  122. ==================
  123.  
  124.  
  125. The hard disk password is a newly added function for ThinkPad 560
  126. computers.
  127.  
  128. The hard disk password helps you protect the information stored
  129. on your removable hard disk drive.  Even if your hard disk was
  130. removed from the computer, the information stored in your hard
  131. disk cannot be accessed without the hard disk password.
  132.  
  133. When you turn on the computer, the hard disk password prompt
  134. appears on the screen and reminds you to enter your password.
  135.  
  136. Note:  The hard disk password is stored on the hard disk drive,
  137.        and the power-on password is stored in the nonvolatile
  138.        memory of the computer.
  139.  
  140. Using the hard disk password with the resume function:
  141. ------------------------------------------------------
  142.  
  143. When a hard disk password is set, a preset time-out or an incoming
  144. call will not activate the resume function.
  145.  
  146. To use the resume function with a hard disk password, set the
  147. same password for both the power-on password and the hard disk
  148. password.

  153. * Using a Hard Disk Password with a Power-On Password:

  155. * You can use the hard disk password with the power-on
  156. * password at the same time.  When you turn on the computer,
  157. * the power-on password prompt appears first, and then the hard
  158. * disk password prompt appears on the screen.  Enter the
  159. * correct passwords.

  161. * When you set the same hard disk password as the power-on
  162. * password, only the power-on password prompt appears on the
  163. * screen.  Enter the correct password.  The hard disk password
  164. * screen does not appear.

  168. SETTING A HARD DISK PASSWORD
  169. ----------------------------

  171. To set a hard disk password:
  172.  
  173.   1  Start Easy-Setup; then select the Password icon.
  174.  
  175.      To start Easy-Setup, press and hold F1 and turn on the
  176.      computer.
  177.  
  178.   2  Select the HDD icon.
  179.  
  180.      NOTE:  In your User's Guide, only the Power-On icon is
  181.             mentioned.  However, the HDD icon appears on the
  182.             same panel as the Power-On icon.
  183.  
  184.   3  Type your desired hard disk password; then press Enter.
  185.  
  186.      You can use any combination of up to 7 characters.  Use a
  187.      combination of any letters or numbers (A to Z, 0 to 9) in
  188.      upper case (A) or lower case (a).  Uppercase and lowercase
  189.      letters (for example, A and a) are treated the same.
  190.  
  191.      NOTE:  When you type a wrong key, use the Backspace key to
  192.             erase it, and then type the correct key.

  194.   4  Type your hard disk password again to verify it; then press
  195.      Enter.

  211. Once you set the password, you cannot change or remove it in
  212. Easy-Setup; you must change or remove a password at the
  213. password prompt screen that appears when you turn on the
  214. computer.  See "CHANGING A HARD DISK PASSWORD" and "REMOVING
  215. A HARD DISK PASSWORD".

  218. ENTERING A HARD DISK PASSWORD
  219. -----------------------------
  220.  
  221. If a hard disk password is set, the hard disk password prompt
  222. appears when:
  223.  
  224.   -You turn on the computer.
  225.   -When the computer returns to normal operation from suspend
  226.    or hibernation mode.
  227.  
  228. When the password prompt appears at the top left corner on the
  229. screen:
  230.  
  231.   1  Type the hard disk password.
  232.  
  233.      -Each time you press a key, the symbol ... appears.
  234.      -When typing your password, release each key quickly.  If
  235.       you hold a key down too long, the same letter can be
  236.       entered repeatedly.
  237.  
  238.      NOTE:  DO NOT PRESS THE SPACEBAR after you enter the
  239.             password; this action removes the password.
  240.  
  241.   2  Press Enter.
  242.  
  243.      -When the password is entered correctly, OK appears and
  244.       the computer starts normal operation.
  245.  
  246.      -When you enter the password incorrectly, X appears.
  247.       Enter the correct password.
  248.  
  249.       If you fail to enter the correct password after three tries,
  250.       you must turn the computer off, wait at least 5 seconds,
  251.       and turn it on to try again.

  254. CHANGING A HARD DISK PASSWORD
  255. -----------------------------
  256.  
  257. The procedure to change a hard disk password depends on
  258. whether it is set to the same password as the power-on password.
  259.  
  260. When the hard disk password is set the same as the power-on
  261. password:
  262.  
  263.   1  Remove the passwords by following the steps in "Removing a
  264.      Power-On Password" in your User's Guide.
  265.  
  266.      This operation removes both the hard disk password and the
  267.      power-on password.
  268.  
  269.   2  In Easy-Setup, set a new hard disk password.  See the steps
  270.      in "SETTING A HARD DISK PASSWORD".
  271.  
  272.   3  If you need a power-on password, set in Easy-Setup.
  273.  
  274. When the hard disk password and the power-on password are
  275. different, or a power-on password has not been set:
  276.  
  277.   1  Turn off the computer and wait at least 5 seconds; then turn
  278.      it on.
  279.  
  280.   2  If you have set a power-on password, type it; then press
  281.      Enter.
  282.  
  283.   3  When the hard disk password prompt appears, type your
  284.      current hard disk password; then press the Spacebar.
  285.  
  286.   4  Type the new password: then press the Spacebar.
  287.  
  288.      Use no more than 7 characters.
  289.  
  290.   5  Type the new password again to verify it; then press Enter.

  298. REMOVING A HARD DISK PASSWORD
  299. -----------------------------

  301. The procedure to remove a hard disk password depends on
  302. whether it is set to the same password as the power-on password.
  303.  
  304. When the hard disk password is set the same as the power-on
  305. password:
  306.  
  307.   1  Remove the password by following the steps in "REMOVING A
  308.      POWER-ON PASSWORD" in your User's Guide.
  309.  
  310.      This operation removes both the hard disk password and the
  311.      power-on password.
  312.  
  313.   2  If you need a power-on password, set it in Easy-Setup.
  314.  
  315.  
  316. When the hard disk password and the power-on password are
  317. different or a power-on password has not been set:
  318.  
  319.   1  Turn off the computer and wait at least 5 seconds; then turn it
  320.      on.
  321.  
  322.   2  If you have set the power-on password, type it; then press
  323.      Enter.
  324.   3  When the hard disk password prompt appears, type your
  325.      current hard disk password; then press the Spacebar.
  326.   4  Press Enter.

  336. Updating System Program
  337. -----------------------
  338.  
  339. Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update
  340.          the system program.
  341.  
  342.        - If your computer is attached to a port replicator,
  343.          turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  344.  
  345. 1.  Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  346. 2.  Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  347. 3.  Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive
  348.     and turn on the computer.
  349. 4.  Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the
  350.     information that appears.
  351. 5.  Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  352. 6.  Select "Update system program" and follow the instruction on
  353.     the screen.
  354.  
  355.     Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update
  356.              has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE
  357.              COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM
  358.              BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
  359.  
  360. After the update has been completed, run the diagnostics to make sure
  361. that the computer runs with no errors:
  362.  
  363. 7.  Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from
  364.     the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
  365. 8.  Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key
  366.     until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
  367. 9.  If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  368. 10. Select Test, then select Start to run all the basic tests.
  369.     Various test patterns will appear on the screen.
  370.     An OK will appear for each device that passes the test.
  371. 11. Verify that OK appears for all of the devices tested.
  372. 12. Press the Esc key to exit Test and turn off the computer.
