  4. Installing Windows(**) 95 Upgrade on IBM ThinkPad 760C and 760CD
  5. Version 1.01
  6. Mar. 20, 1996
  7.
  8.
  9.   The purpose of this document is to assist you in installing Windows
  10.   95 on your ThinkPad 760C or 760CD computer.  All the steps listed
  11.   should be followed exactly to help you in your successful installation
  12.   of Microsoft(**) Windows 95 and the use of all the ThinkPad functions.
  13.   Make sure to have the proper diskettes on hand and do the steps to
  14.   prepare your system for the installation.  This document is written
  15.   with the assumption that you are starting with an IBM Preloaded
  16.   "SelectaSystem" which means that OS/2 Warp and Dos/Windows 3.11 came
  17.   on your system. Also assumed is that the ThinkPad Features and
  18.   utilities that were installed on your system are still there, for
  19.   example, you should have an icon called "ThinkPad Features" on your
  20.   Windows desktop.  If you have reformatted your hard drive or do not
  21.   have the ThinkPad Features loaded, you will need to obtain the
  22.   programs from IBM.  These additional programs are listed in
  23.   section 8 of this document.
  24.
  25.   As with any significant change to your computer's operating
  26.   system or software configuration, you should be sure to backup
  27.   all important files including data files before proceeding.
  28.

  202.
  203.       2. Remove STRTSCR.EXE (ThinkPad Welcome screens).
  204.
  205.       To avoid a possible "Windows 95 Explorer Fault" error
  206.       message, you should remove the STRTSCR.EXE from the
  207.       Windows WIN.INI file.
  208.
  209.          a. Start the Windows 3.1 NotePad application from the
  210.             Accessories Program Group.
  211.          b. Click File, Open. Then type "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and

  216.             delete this portion of the line. For example,
  217.
  218.             "run=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
  219.
  220.                  should be changed to:
  221.
  222.             "run=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE"
  223.
  224.             Or,
  225.
  226.             "load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE"
  227.
  228.                  should be changed to:

  236.       3. Remove unnecessary PCMCIA SRAM, Flash, and ATA drivers
  237.          and other settings.
  238.
  239.         If you are installing from CD or a network drive and you
  240.         plan to use the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
  241.         (recommended), you may want to first disable the PCMCIA
  242.         driver for SRAM, Flash, and ATA type PCMCIA cards. This
  243.         will remove the drive letters (usually D,E,F, and G)
  244.         reserved by the PCMCIA driver. These will not be reserved
  245.         when you install the Windows 95 Integrated PCMCIA support
  246.         later, so disabling this before installation of Windows 95
  247.         will give you a consistent default installation drive
  248.         for any Windows 95 drivers you may install in the future.
  249.         To disable the PCMCIA SRAM, Flash, and ATA driver:
  250.
  251.          a. Edit the CONFIG.SYS (using Windows Notepad or another
  252.             editor.
  253.          b. Find the line that contains:
  254.
  255.             "DISKDRV.SYS"
  256.
  257.             If not already present, place a "REM " in front of this
  258.             line so that it will not be executed. For example,
  259.
  260.             "DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
  261.
  262.                  should be changed to:
  263.
  264.             "REM DEVICEHIGH=C:\THINKPAD\DISKDRV.SYS"
  265.
  266.
  267.          Other cleanup recommendations:
  268.
  269.             While these lines will not prevent your system from
  270.             operating in Windows 95, they will generate error
  271.             messages and we recommend making these changes.
  272.
  273.          c. Edit the CONFIG.SYS using Windows Notepad or another
  274.             editor.
  275.
  276.          d. Find the line or lines that contain:

  280.             Remove the "/FASTA20" from this line, for example :
  281.
  282.             "DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /FASTA20"
  283.
  284.                 should be changed to
  285.
  286.             "DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS"
  287.
  288.          e. Find the line or lines that contain:
  289.
  290.             "MOVEXBDAHI"
  291.
  292.             Remove the "MOVEXBDAHI" from all lines, for example :
  293.
  294.             "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS MOVEXBDAHI I=B000-BFFF
  295.              X=C800-CFFF"
  296.
  297.                 should be changed to
  298.
  299.             "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-BFFF X=C800-CFFF"
  300.
  301.          f. Exit the editor and save the changes.
  302.
  303.      4. Remove IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows from the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  304.
  305.        This is necessary since the IBM Antivirus for DOS / Windows
  306.        program is not supported in Windows 95. If you are using
  307.        other virus protection software, you should see the SETUP.TXT
  308.        file on the Windows 95 Diskette 1 or in the \WIN95 directory
  309.        on the Windows 95 CD for information before continuing with
  310.        installation.
  311.
  312.          a. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT (using Windows Notepad or another
  313.             editor.
  314.          b. Find the line that contains:
  315.
  316.             "IBMAVDR.BAT"
  317.
  318.             Place a "REM " in front of this line so that it will
  319.             not be run. For example,
  320.
  321.             "CALL C:\DOS\IBMAVDR.BAT C:\DOS\"
  322.
  323.                  should be changed to:
  324.

  338.       the instructions that came with the Windows 95 program (normally
