Title: VIDSTUF AVAIL
Date: 94/05/03
What this package contains:
===========================
This package contains video utility programs for use ONLY
with the ThinkPad 350/350C & PS/Note 425/425C systems.
Each utility is designed to provide a single feature or
workaround for a common problem, & is described in detail
in the following section. Additional utility programs
may be added to this package from time to time.
Use of these programs on any other system may result in
unpredictable results.
Program Descriptions (& package history):
=========================================
(All programs copyright IBM Corporation)
Package version 1.0, 94/05/03:
1IFIX.EXE v1.0 (DOS)
------------------------
A problem exists with the AF4US1I system BIOS, where text
character descenders may be lost (the bottom-most portion
of lower case 'g', 'j', etc.). This occurs when a system
with the "1I" BIOS is started with the Vertical Position
set to "Top", "Center" or "Bottom". This problem will not
occur if the Vertical Position is set to "Expand".
The Vertical Position setting & BIOS level can be checked
within the Configuration Utility (Fn+F1), pages 2 & 3,
respectively.
The current workaround is to use the Configuration Utility
to set the Vertical Position to "Expand", exit the utility
(select "Yes" to save changes), then re-enter the utility
& reset the Vertical Position to the desired setting (saving
the change again). This procedure must be repeated each time
the system is started 'cold' (power switch) or 'warm'
(control-alt-delete).
For DOS users, simply add the 1IFIX.EXE program to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, & the descenders will be restored properly
without having to perform the above workaround. This routine
is **not** resident & requires no system resources when it
has finished executing. There are no command line switches
for this routine.
VGAONLY.COM v1.0 (DOS)
--------------------------
Some DOS programs may incorrectly "auto-detect" the highest
possible display resolution. Some programs have been found
to incorrectly select 800x600 resolution when running on the
LCD (which is limited to 640x480). A stable display will
result, but a portion of the screen on the right & bottom
edges will not be visible.
Some programs will allow the user to "force" the display to
a particular resolution, & if available, that method should
be used. For programs which do not offer this option, &
which incorrectly select the 800x600 modes, the current
workaround is to run the program with an external display
attached (which is capable of 800x600).
VGAONLY.COM is a TSR (terminate & stay resident) program
which will intercept video mode set calls & reject any
request for modes higher than VGA (640x480). This program
will **usually** inhibit DOS programs from incorrectly
selecting a video mode which is incompatible with the LCD.
There are no command line switches for this routine.
This program should be used ONLY WHEN NECESSARY for specific
DOS programs. It can only be removed from memory by restarting
the computer - either 'cold' (power switch) or 'warm'
(control-alt-delete) restart.
If you are using Windows (tm) with a high resolution video
driver (anything greater than 640x480 & 16 colors), & you
forget to remove this program, Windows will not start.
You will see a message similar to:
Error: Video BIOS does not support this mode.
<< Press any key to continue >>
Simply reboot your system to remove the VGAONLY TSR, then
restart Windows.
