  8. This is the freeware version of Eudora for Windows. 
  9. There is also a commercial version of Eudora called 
  10. Eudora Pro.  If you would like information about 
  11. the commercial version, a brief description is 
  12. provided in the "About Eudora Pro" menu in this
  13. freeware.

  31. Minimum Requirements
  32. ---------------------

  34. To use Eudora Light for Windows V3.0.2, you 
  35. must have the following:
  36.  
  37. *    IBM-compatible PC.
  38. *    For 16-bit Eudora: Windows 3.1, 3.11, 
  39.      or Workgroups
  40.      For 32-bit Eudora: Windows 95, NT 3.51,  
  41.      or NT 4.0
  42. *    Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking  
  43.      package (not needed for serial connection)
  44. *    A mail account with an ISP (Internet  
  45.      Service Provider) or an Internet-style  
  46.      network, providing an SMTP service and  
  47.      a POP3 service.
  48. *    Access to your mail account via a  
  49.      modem (9600bps or higher recommended)  
  50.      or Internet-style network connection.

  55. Installation
  56. ------------

  58. To install Eudora, follow these directions:
  59.  
  60. 1.   Exit any applications you are running.
  61.  
  62. 2.   If you are installing from a software archive,
  63.      double-click on it to start the Setup program.
  64.  
  65.      If you are installing from diskette, insert the
  66.      Eudora Light diskette 1 into drive A: of your PC.
  67.      Then select Run... from the Start menu, enter
  68.      A:Setup.exe, and click OK.
  69.  
  70. 3.   Read the Welcome screen, then click Next.
  71.      The Software License Agreement is displayed.
  72.  
  73. 4.   Read the Software License Agreement and click Next
  74.      (you can also save or print the Agreement).
  75.  
  76. 5.   Specify a directory to install Eudora, then
  77.      click Next.
  78.  
  79.      To upgrade an older version of Eudora Light, 
  80.      select your current Eudora directory. All of your 
  81.      messages, mailboxes, folders, and options will 
  82.      be maintained.
  83.  
  84. 6.   Select the version of the software that you want
  85.      to install, 16- or 32-bit. Based on the operating
  86.      system and connectivity software that you are
  87.      running, the Setup program recommends an appropriate
  88.      version.
  89.  
  90. 7.   Verify that the displayed settings are correct,
  91.      then click Next (or use the Back button if you need
  92.      to go back and make changes).
  93.  
  94. 8.   If you are installing from diskette, you are
  95.      prompted to insert additional diskettes into drive A.
  96.  
  97. 9.  Eudora is installed in the destination directory,
  98.     and you are prompted for whether or not you want
  99.     to view the README file. Click Yes.
  100.  
  101. Note:   Always keep the Help file in the same directory 
  102.         as the executable (.exe).

  109. Dragging the dump truck icon onto a folder icon in the 
  110. mailbox list now causes the folder to open automatically.

  114. Configuration
  115. -------------
  116.  
  117. The first time you run Eudora, you will 
  118. have to edit some of the configuration 
  119. information in order to be able to send 
  120. and receive mail.
  121.  
  122. Select Options... from the Tools Menu.
  123.  
  124. The fields you need to review are:
  125.  
  126. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have 
  127. an account on a computer that runs a POP3 
  128. server.  This is the account to which your 
  129. e-mail messages are delivered before they 
  130. are transferred to the Eudora program on 
  131. your PC.  In this field, type your login 
  132. name for this account, an "@" sign, and 
  133. the full (domain) name of the computer.  
  134. For example, if your assigned login name
  135. is "carolyn," and the name of the computer 
  136. where you receive e-mail is "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," 
  137. type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" in this field.
  138.  
  139. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, 
  140. as it appears here, is displayed in parentheses 
  141. after your return address in your outgoing mail.
  142. It is also displayed in the sender column of 
  143. all messages you send.
  144.  
  145. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with 
  146. an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) 
  147. server program is necessary.  You need not 
  148. have a login to this computer, but you must 
  149. have access to it through your network.  
  150. If the computer on which you have your POP 
  151. account is also an SMTP server, leave this 
  152. field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name 
  153. of the computer you want to use as your 
  154. SMTP server.
  155.  
  156. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses 
  157. your POP account as your return address.  
  158. If you wish to use a return address 
  159. other than your POP account, enter it here.
  160.  
  161.  
  162. If you have the New Mail Notification 
  163. "Sound" switch on, and when new mail
  164. arrives, you will hear a notification 
  165. sound.  In order for this to work, your 
  166. system must have a properly configured 
  167. sound board, or you must have installed 
  168. the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous  
  169. ftp from ftp.eudora.com the file 
  170. /quest/windows/utils/SPEAK.EXE).  
  171. Eudora has a built-in sound, but if you 
  172. wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV
  173. format.  To change the default new mail 
  174. sound, select Options... from the Special 
  175. menu, and then select the Getting Attention 
  176. category. Select the button under the 
  177. "Play a sound" checkbox, and a dialog  
  178. will prompt you for the sound file.
  179.  
  180. Note that this driver will only work for 
  181. the Windows 3.X operating system.
  182. It will not work for Windows NT or Windows 95.
  183.  
  184. If the mail you are sending is returning
  185. to you saying that the message
  186. does not have a Date: header, add the 
  187. following entry to your EUDORA.INI
  188. file:
  189.

  191. TimeZone=xxxnnnyyy
  192.  
  193. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations 
  194. like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is the offset 
  195. in hours WEST of GMT (i.e., those that 
  196. are east of GMT should enter a negative 
  197. number here).  xxx is the timezone during 
  198. Standard Time and yyy is the timezone 
  199. during Daylight Savings Time.  If you 
  200. do not change your clocks during Daylight 
  201. Savings Time, leave yyy blank.

  208. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, 
  209. then a Date: header will not be put
  210. in outgoing messages, which is fine for 
  211. most users because their mail server 
  212. will insert the correct Date: header.  
  213. The moral is - if you don't get messages 
  214. bounced because of a missing Date: 
  215. header, then leave the TimeZone entry alone.

  219. TCP/IP Services
  220. ---------------

  222. Eudora makes use of several different 
  223. TCP/IP services, and has default port
  224. numbers for these services.  Most sites 
  225. put these services on the default ports, 
  226. but some may not.  Contact your site 
  227. network administrator to make sure that 
  228. the following services listed below are 
  229. indeed on the default port numbers.  
  230. If they are not, you will have to make 
  231. some changes to some configuration 
  232. file(s) in your TCP/IP package 
  233. (usually to a SERVICES file).
  234.  
  235. Below are a list of the services which 
  236. Eudora uses, and what they might look 
  237. like in a typical services file.  The 
  238. names of these services must be exactly 
  239. as named here (e.g., the entry for the 
  240. POP3 service must be "pop3" and not 
  241. "pop-3").  Make sure that you make 
  242. any changes necessary for your TCP/IP 
  243. package to specify the location of the 
  244. SERVICES file.

  252. To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):

  259. Eudora, your site must have a password 
  260. changing server installed.  See the 
  261. directory quest/unix/servers/password on 
  262. ftp.eudora.com for examples of password
  263. changing servers):

  266. There are also entries in the [Settings] 
  267. section of the EUDORA.INI file for default 
  268. port numbers of services.  These are provided 
  269. for setups in which the SERVICES file cannot 
  270. be modified.  Do not use these entries
  271. unless the services are not on default port 
  272. numbers and you cannot modify them in your 
  273. TCP/IP package.  Here are sample INI entries:
