  30. 1) What is SGML?

  32.    ANSWER: SGML stands for "Standard Generalized Markup Language" (or
  33.     "Standard Goldfarb Mosher Lorie," but that's an inside joke).
  34.     Essentially, SGML is a method for creating interchangeable,
  35.     structured documents; with it, you can do the following:

  37.     - assemble a single document from many sources (such as SGML
  38.       fragments, word processor files, database queries, graphics,
  39.       video clips, and real-time data from sensing instruments);
  40.  
  41.     - define a document structure using a special grammar called a
  42.       Document Type Definition (DTD);
  43.  
  44.     - add markup to show the structural units in a document; and
  45.  
  46.     - validate that the document follows the structure that you
  47.       defined in the DTD.

  49.     The official definition of SGML is in the international standard

  90.     equivalent to asking where you can rent a machine to convert
  91.     bricks into a house automatically.

  95.     Guide (see above) to find some software tools that can get you

  100.    to HTML/RTF/Word/WordPerfect/Postscript automatically?

  102.    ANSWER: You _can_ do this automatically (it's more like converting
  103.     a house back to bricks), but usually not out of the box -- unless
  104.     someone has already done the job for you, you will have to use a
  105.     graphic interface or a programming language to tell the formatting
  106.     application what the document should look like.  Again, Steve
  107.     Pepper's Whirlwind Guide (see above) lists some software tools
  108.     that can get you started.

  111. 6) Who's using SGML?
  112.  
  113.    ANSWER: Government, many big industries, the military, academic
  114.     research projects (big and small), and everyone who uses the
  115.     World-Wide Web -- SGML consultants and developers are very busy.

  126. 7) What's the difference between SGML and HTML?

  128.    ANSWER: HTML is an SGML application (a DTD and a set of processing
  129.     conventions).  Most HTML browsers do not support some basic SGML
  130.     constructions, like arbitrary entities, but nearly all SGML
  131.     authoring tools are capable of producing good HTML documents.

  137. 8) What's the difference between SGML and XML?

  139.    ANSWER: Unlike HTML, XML is not an SGML application -- instead,
  140.     it's a set of simple conventions for using SGML without some of
  141.     the more esoteric features.  It's still SGML, though.

  149.    ANSWER: Sure, if they're real and SGML-related.  It's much more

  151.     from head-hunters.

  154.     often complain about too many job postings in comp.text.sgml.
