  26. 1. Preamble:

  28. Recognizing that Usenet, the newsgroup arm of the Internet, has lost
  29. much of its purity as its population skyrockets and books instructing
  30. people how to spam for commercial purposes are published, we have to
  31. likewise recognize that "Netiquette" is breached every day. Nonetheless, we
  32. strive to maintain a support group to which people who are seeking freedom from
  33. nicotine addiction and tobacco use can come, lurk, and post freely, without
  34. feeling restricted by 
  35. the presence of a moderator, or preyed upon by those seeking to profit at their
  36. expense.

  38. We find the conducting of commercial enterprise on a Usenet group,
  39. particularly when done under cover of being helpful, to be the most severe and
  40. despicable form of "net abuse," and for that reason we have formed a policy to
  41. which we ask people to adhere. Failure to do so will result in one or more
  42. complaints being made
  43.  to the offending poster's postmaster. These complaints can lead, *and have
  44. led*, to the cancellation of offenders' Internet accounts.
  45.  
  46. 2. The Policy:
  47.  
  48. It is simply this: if you have a technique or have used a product for
  49. smoking cessation, feel free to post about that technique or product in full, as
  50. long as IT WILL NOT COST A SINGLE SUBSCRIBER TO alt.support.stop-smoking A
  51. SINGLE PENNY, CENTIME, PENCE, ETC. AT ANY TIME. That means you may not offer to
  52. send, provide, or 
  53. point to any material of any sort for any fee whatsoever, including photocopying
  54. charges or postage costs. It also means you may not make a post which offers
  55. free information which *leads* to the vending of any idea, technique, or product
  56. designed to hel
  57. p a person to quit smoking.
  58.  
  59. In addition, please follow these guidelines in determining whether your post is
  60. appropriate. If you cannot satisfy *each* of these conditions, do not post! :
  61.  
  62.    a) You should first make sure your post does not violate any aspect of this
  63. policy;
  64.  
  65.    b) You should be able to reveal everything you know by posting to the group,
  66. *not* through e-mail;
  67.  
  68.    c) The product or technique should be available *in stores*, preferably
  69. world-wide, or, in the case of software or electronic media, available without
  70. cost or fee over the Internet;
  71.  
  72.    d) You should have no beneficiary connection to the product or
  73. technique whatsoever, except that:
  74.  
  75.    e) You yourself should be an ex-smoker who has actually used the
  76. product or technique to quit, or alternatively, make clear where you heard of
  77. the product or technique.

  79. 3. Good Intentions
  80.  
  81. No one will be exempted from this policy because of a pure heart or
  82. good intentions, even if your technique or product will wipe tobacco use off the
  83. face of the earth. In such a case, we suggest you contact a patent lawyer and
  84. learn about your other marketing options, such as retail, mail order - even a
  85. commercial Web pa
  86. ge. You could make a fortune, and you would deserve to! But
  87. alt.support.stop-smoking is a support group, not a store, and we're not here to
  88. go shopping.

  90. 4. Action Taken Against Violators of this Policy
  91.  
  92. It is likely that one or more readers will report your
  93. violation of "netiquette" to your postmaster or systems administrator and ask
  94. him or her to take action.
  95.  
  96. After a complaint has been lodged, you can expect your postmaster or
  97. systems administrator to warn you that posting commercial messages to a SUPPORT
  98. newsgroup is considered UNETHICAL.
  99.  
  100. Be advised that IT IS NOT UNCOMMON TO HAVE ONE'S ACCOUNT TERMINATED or
  101. INTERNET ACCESS REVOKED for unethical behavior on the net.

  103. 5. Other Commercial Posts
  104.  
  105. Any commercial post appearing on alt.support.stop-smoking will be dealt with as
  106. above, even if it is not for something related to smoking cessation.
