  28. What this list is
  29. -----------------
  30.
  31. This is a list of resources for *emotional* support on the Internet and
  32. interconnected systems. It is intended to help you find and use these
  33. groups. Please do *not* mass mail this list for *any* reason at all.
  34.
  35. Groups and resources with a focus on information giving, campaigning
  36. academic study or advocacy are not listed. Some groups are not listed
  37. because I know that they *can* be too rough on people seeking support. On
  38. the other hand, I have not been able to give all these groups a full "road
  39. test".
  40.
  41. PLEASE LET ME KNOW of errors, changes etc.
  42. mailto:steveha@cix.compulink.co.uk
  43.
  44.
  45. Anonymity and Privacy
  46. ---------------------
  47.
  48.  The growth of web-based email services such as Hotmail means that
  49. anonymity is even easier than it used to be. Consider getting a free
  50. alternative email address from www.hotmail.com or www.yahoo.com just for
  51. use when using support groups.
  52.
  53.  Keeping sensitive information confidential? Encrypt your e-mail with
  54. "Pretty Good Privacy" (tm). "PGP" is a powerful engine and we supply the
  55. rest of the car! See http://www.netservs.com/pgp/
  56.
  57.
  58. How to use this list
  59. --------------------
  60.
  61.  Find the subject in the first column. Look under several headings.
  62. Generally, you should mail the address in the second column 2 and (where
  63. listed) "say" the command shown in the body of your message.
  64.
  65.  A few of these e-mail addresses are prefixed "mailto:". With these, you
  66. are talking direct to a person rather than joining a group.
  67.
  68.  Where an address is prefixed "news:", you should use your system's normal
  69. command for joining Usenet groups. Many of these groups are in the "alt"
  70. hierarchy and you may find that your system doesn't carry the group you
  71. want. Try asking your system administrator to add the missing group.
  72.
  73.  Note: some browsers will suppress the "mailto:" and "news:" tags
  74.
  75.  Where an address is prefixed "AOL", "CIS", "CIX", "Genie", "Prodigy" or
  76. "Delphi", the group is restricted to users of the named system and you
  77. should use that system's normal command for joining a "conference", "forum"
  78. etc.
  79.
  80.  Note that references to "CIX" refer to the UK based system of that name.
  81. Even if you are not in the UK, CIX membership is possible by Telneting to
  82. cix.compulink.co.uk. They charge 29.38 pounds sign up and a monthly minimum
  83. of 7.34 pounds for which you get at least 100 minutes. On line registration
  84. by credit card. Is something similar for the other systems I mention?
  85. Please tell me!
  86.
  87.  These groups are not suitable for those who wish to argue that the
  88. particular condition does not exist. If you believe that what you have to
  89. say may upset some readers, use a "spoiler". For example, you might prefix
  90. your message:
  91.
  92.  "SPOILER: Explicit account of rape"
  93.
  94.  and put lots of blank lines between that and the main text.
  95.
  96.  These are primarily *support* groups. They *may* be good sources of
  97. information too. Let this slant influence the way you post to a group. If
  98. someone posts "Hey, I've just been diagnosed with X disease, anyone know a
  99. good doctor?", ask how badly it's affecting them and how they feel about
  100. it. Information exchange can be valuable but often the hardest thing to
  101. find is personal emotional support.
  102.
  103.
  104. Checking the "Rules"
  105. --------------------
  106.
  107.  Be careful to read any "Welcome" message sent to you when you join a
  108. mailing list or any other source of information about local "rules". Often,
  109. what's on the list is considered confidential and expected to stay on the
  110. list. Some posters to Usenet groups maintain that they are confidential
  111. too. Given the public nature of Usenet it's more gray. Always remember
  112. these are *support* groups and not hunting grounds for those who want to
  113. "save" people. Let them be a "safe" place, safe to post a suicide note
  114. even.
  115.

  496.
  497. Checking out the "agenda"
  498. -------------------------
  499.
  500. Almost all of these resources are self-help groups. They don't try to sell
  501. you anything. Of course, individual members may have their own agenda and
  502. occasionally you'll see blatant commercial postings - usually from
  503. outsiders.
  504.
  505.  When an *organisation* offers a resource, you're entitled to expect it to
  506. have an agenda of some sort and to be able to discover what it is. The only
  507. organisation currently listed is The Samaritans. They're a non-profit,
  508. non-religious support service for the suicidal and despairing. Their only
  509. agenda is emotional support. They don't sell anything.
  510.
  511.  There's a few other people around on the Net offering support services.
  512. With some of them, I haven't yet been able to discover their agenda. With
  513. others, at least part of their agenda is to sell you something. Now,
  514. there's nothing wrong with someone earning a living in this area but when
  515. your audience is potentially vulnerable, it's important that your agenda is
  516. easily visible. Such visibility cannot be conveyed easily in a listing such
  517. as this so that's why such resources are not here. Having said that, I'd be
  518. interested in hearing from *anybody* on this issue.
  519.
  520.  Finally, what's *my* agenda? Firstly I believe that offering people
  521. emotional support is a "Good Thing". The other half is that I sell
  522. software for email helplines. See: http://www.netservs.com/helpmail/
  523.
  524.
  525. Quiet and Busy Groups
  526. ---------------------
  527.
  528. Some of these are very busy with dozens of messages a day. If you find that
  529. doesn't suit you, look to see if there's an alternative. It may be a cue
  530. that a *regional* group is needed if only to become manageable.
  531.
  532.  At the other end, you may find that a group seems to be dead. This can be
  533. natural, especially in a small group. It doesn't mean that the group is no
  534. good so don't let that put you off asking for support. The group may spring
  535. to life and help you and then subside.
  536.
  537.
  538. Start your own group? Some thoughts
  539. -----------------------------------
  540.
  541. Start your own Internet Emotional Support group? Some thoughts
  542.
  543. First of all, ask yourself why. One good answer is that you
  544. can't find what you need in an existing group.  Try using the
  545. search engine at http://www.netservs.com/care/ to check that
  546. there really isn't a suitable one already..
  547.
  548. You'll probably need to devote a fair amount of effort to starting
  549. up and publicising your group. It takes time for things to really
  550. get going. On the other hand, don't expect a group to be a constant
  551. hive of activity. I know several good groups with only a few dozen
  552. members where it's often quiet for weeks. When a member needs the
  553. group - it springs to life.
  554.
  555. Some very successful groups are based on automated mailing lists and
  556. they're easy to start. Try http://groups.yahoo.com/. They have thousands
  557. of groups on all subjects so check again that there isn't an existing
  558. group. If necessary, follow their instructions to set up a group. If you
  559. find the process too technical for you, consider finding another sufferer
  560. with more expertise.
  561.
  562. Most group are self-help but The Samaritans suicide hotline in the list is
  563. modelled on the traditional telephone service. There you are talking to
  564. trained volunteers. Starting such a service is a major undertaking. See
  565. http://www.netservs.com/helpmail/ for more information.
  566.
  567.
