This is about the time I decided to become a 'serious' collector, and started searching for older issues. I started collecting the questions and answers on the mailing list, then added more information gathered primarily from the 40th and 35th anniversary issues. Most of the information from the anniversary issues falls into the 'interesting fact' category, rather than the 'frequently asked questions' category. If you know of an interesting fact that is not included, please let me know. Recently it has become a very popular place to find adds for Playboy back issues for sale, or wanted. - About the Playboy Collectors Association. I only just recently discovered the Playboy Collectors Association. It was started in 1987 by Tom Bonner. The main purpose of the PCA is to help promote the hobby and give information to collectors on buying and selling Playboy Memorabilia. Anyone having questions on selling their early issues or Playboy Memorabilia can write PCA with a self-addressed envelope. PCA will help try to find a buyer, either through other collectors or other dealers. Playboy Memorabilia includes items from the catalogs, clubs or casinos and magazines from 1953 through 1955. Playboy Magazine was founded by Hugh Hefner. The first issue was published in November of 1953. The issue had no date on it, as Mr. Hefner was unsure if there would ever be a second issue. Luckily there was. It is now a monthly publication from Playboy Enterprises, Inc. It is self-billed as "Entertainment for Men" and features articles on a wide variety of issues; reviews of movies, books, music, cars, sports and new gadgets; interesting and in-depth interviews; and last, but not least, pictorials of beautiful women. Eventually, Playboy branched out and published books, videos, special pictorial issues, and more recently, designer apparel. * About the Playboy World Wide Web Site The Playboy home page contains excerpts from the Dear Playboy, Movie Reviews, Book Reviews, Playboy Advisor and miscellaneous quotes from the various other articles and features. It also contains the full text of selected Playboy interviews, which change periodically. Starting with the December 1994 Playmate Elisa Bridges, each Playmate has a page dedicated to her. These pages ususally contain a blurb about the Playmate, an inline, rated PG-13 JPEG, and a link for downloading an unpublished nude JPEG of the Playmate. Some pages also include digitized signatures and sound clips. And finally, there are links to The Playboy Catalog and a page describing the various Playboy email addresses. The Playboy Home Page can be found at <http://www.playboy.com>. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions about Playboy ----------------------- - Is Playboy obscene/pornography? Oh no you don't. I'm not even gonna touch that one. Obscenity and pornography are both subjective labels, and each person must make that decision for themselves. If it could be determined objectively, you wouldn't be asking me. - Are there databases of [playmates/articles/books/videos]? If you have the money to spend, Bob Chatham and Paul Hugli maintain the "Destiny Reference Guide." Volume 1 covers Playboy magazine from December 1953 through June 1992, including Playmates, Pictorials, Articles and Interviews. Volume 2 covers Centerfolds and models appearances in calendars, videos, specials, movies and television programs. They are both printed on 8.5"x11" paper with plastic spiral binding. They are also available in database form. Both volumes are available from Ken Ritchie (see Apendix B) : Volume 1 is $25, Volume 2 is $20. Hefner originally intended the magazine to be called "Stag Party" but switched to Playboy when Stag Magazine threatened legal action. - When was the first issue of Playboy published? The first issue was published in December 1953, although the issue had no date. - Why can't I find the March 1955 issue of Playboy? Because there isn't one. Playboy was not able to meet the publishing deadline for the March issue, so they published the late March issue as the April issue and have continued to publish issues a month early every since then. * How much is the (month year) issue of Playboy worth? That depends on the issue and the condition of the magazine. A copy of the first issue can run as high as $8,000 (near mint condition) or as low as $500 (fair/poor condition). Appendix C of this FAQ contains a list of reputable dealers and their Price lists. These lists can give you an idea of how much you would pay for a particular issue. Of course, don't expect to be able to sell an issue for the listed price, especially issues from after the 1960s. There are several book and guides available. The most up to date is "Playboy Magazine Price Guide and Checklist" from the Playboy Collectors Association. This simple guide is obviously not done by a professional publisher, but is nonetheless the most current and complete guide. It contains thumb-nail photos of each centerfold (black and white photocopied) from December 1953 through December 1976 and each cover from December 1953 through December 1963. It lists the price of each issues in Fine, Very Good and Good condition. It is $8.95 and is available from Ken Ritchie (see appendix C) or directly from PCA : : Playboy Collector Association : PO Box 653 : Phillipsburg, MO 65722-0653 "The Playboy Collectors Guide and Price List 6th edition" Published and distributed by Budget Enterprises P.O. Box 592, Snowdon Station, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, H3X 3T7. This is a professionally done paperback book, 383 pages long. It is a comprehensive guide specifically for Playboy collectors. It also contains black and white thumb-nail photos of each cover, and lists the feature articles, pictorial and interviews for every issue from December 1953 through December 1983. This would be invaluable if it were more up to date. As a guide to collecting, though, it has no equal. The Collectors Guide and Price List is available from Ken Ritche (see Appendix C) for $9. - What are those stars on the cover inside or next to the 'P' in the Playboy? Popular rumor was that the number of stars represented either the number of times Hugh Hefner had slept with the Playmate of the Month, or his rating of how good she was in bed. Officially, however, the start represent the advertising region for that magazine. If you find the same issue with a different number of stars, you will notice that some of the advertisements are different. There were 13 regions, including Chicago Metropolitan, New York Metropolitan, Southern California, Northern California, Central, Eastern, Western, Southeastern, Southwestern, Canada, International, United Kingdom and Military. The last issue with the stars was September 1979 - Where can I get Playboy products? Contact Playboy at 1-800-423-9494 and request a current copy of their catalog. They only sell Playboy Products inside the U.S., their territories and Canada, supposedly because of too many problems with customs, duty, etc. For memorabilia (stuff advertised in older issues), try Ken Ritchie (see Appenix C). - How can I change my subscription address? You may be able to do it over the phone, at the customer service number below, but I've never tried it. There was a radio show called The Playboy Advisor on Westwood in the seventies. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions about Hugh Hefner --------------------------- - How old is Hugh Hefner? That depends on what today is. He was born on April 9, 1926 so that would make him 69 as of this version of the FAQ. - Is he really a genius? My dictionary defines a genius as "a person having extraordinaryily high intelligence, esp. one with an I.Q. of 140 or above." So if the Playboy press releases stating he has an I.Q. of 152 are correct, then yes, he is a genius. - Who are some of his romantic interests? In June 1949, before he started Playboy, he married a classmate from Northwestern University, Mildred Williams. They were married for 10 years. The Playboy Book lists several women as 'interests,' 'important' or some such description, including Joyce Nizzari, Barbi Benton, Karen Christy, Donna Michelle and Sondra Theodore. Carrie Leigh sued him for palimony in 1988, after their four year relationship went sour (she eventually dropped the lawsuit). On July 1, 1989, he married Kimberly Conrad at the Playboy Mansion West. She appeared in a special pictorila as the "Playmate for a Lifetime." * Does he have any kids? Yes, he has several. His first marriage (to Mildred Williams) produced a daughter, Christie (born in 1952), and son, David (born in 1955). His second marriage (to Kimberly Conrad) has (so far!) produced two sons, Marston (born in 1990) and Cooper (born in 1991). Around 1984, he accepted a young man named Mark as his son, based on the mother and the birthday of the boy. However, later tests proved that Mark was not his son. - Hasn't he been arrested a couple of times? He was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for the January 1958 pictorial of Elizabeth Ann Roberts, who was not yet 18 when she posed for Playboy. The charges were later dropped. He was arrested for obscenity for the June 1963 pictorial "The Nudest Jayne Mansfield." The trial ended with a hung jury. - Does he really have an animal species named after him? Yes, there is a species of endangered marsh rabbits named Sylvilagus palustris hefneri. + Where does he live? The original Playboy Mansion, which has been converted into condos, was at 1340 N. State Street. BY THE NUMBERS - through Stacy Sanches, March 1995 Two things to keep in mind: 1) Not all Playmates before the data sheets started with Sondra Theodore in July, 1977 had their measurements published. The figures represent those who did, and are limited to U.S. Playmates. 2) Read the beginning of the human measurements section in the Guiness Book of World Records about the accuracy of human dimensional claims when there is a buck to be made. That depends on what condition you want the issue in. If it is a fairly recent issue, or a post-1960 issue and you aren't concerned about scuffs and folded pages/covers, check Appendix B for a dealer in your local area. If there isn't one, check out the reputable Mail Order dealers in Appendix C. Generally they have each issue in a wide range of conditions. It might cost a little more than what you might pay in a local store, but will probably be in better condition. You can also watch the local classifieds under collectables for someone selling their collection at a bargain price. Most of the time they won't sell individual issues, but it can't hurt to ask. If you are looking for older issues, or want higher quality older issues, you'll have to do a little more work. First, check any local dealers. It's unlikely, but not impossible, that they'll have good quality magazines, but you may get a bargin! Again, watch the classified section of your local news paper, under collectables. On occasion someone will sell an entire collection, often at a good price. Make sure you see the collection before you buy, and check the condition of every issue, if you have time. If you want top quality condition issues, check the list of reputable dealers in Appendix C. You will definately pay more, but, as they say, you get what you pay for. You could even place your own ad in the wanted section, asking for an entire collection in good condition. And again, watch the classified section of your local news paper, under collectables. Make sure you see the collection before you buy it, and check the condition of every issue. There are also several newsgroups on the internet that regularly have postings about Playboy magazines for sale. However, it is kind of risky since you don't know the person, and they usually want payment in advance. This is ok if you want a fairly cheap issues, but I wouldn't recommend buying a December 1953 issues without making arrangements to see it first. It really depends on how serious you are and how much money you have to spend. If you are very very serious, and want permanent, archival storage, you should use mylar/acid-free bags and boxes, with acid free backing boards (to prevent corners and edges from wrinkling and bending). This can be expensive, but will offer the best protection for the magazine. Even if you are very very serious, bear in mind that the circulation of Playboy increased dramatically in the early 60s. It may be a bit of overkill to store these more easily obtainable issues with mylar/ acid-free bags and boxes. One of the better suggestions I've heard was to go all out for the first 100 issues, then use the less expensive Polyethylene bags for issues after that. If you are moderately serious, comic shops and collectors shops often have Polyethylene or plastic bags that will fit Playboy for about 7-8 dollars per 100. Some places may have bags that seal (ala ziploc baggies) to make them airtight. It is generally thought this is bad, because temperature and air pressure variations could cause water vapor to come out of the air trapped in the bag, damaging the magazine. Also, it has been reported that sandwhich bags commonly available in grocery stores will cause the magazine to fade due to both the bags and the paper Playboy is printed on are clay based. * I can't find bags/backing boards locally. What size do I need? The size bag you need depends on the size of each magazine, and whether or not you also plan on using acid free backing boards. For recent issues, 8 1/2" x 11" should be ok. I recomend a flap of at least 1 1/2". For older issues, especially Christmas issues from the Eighties, or if you want to use acid free backing boards, 9" x 11" is pretty much a minimum. If you can find them, bags that are slightly longer than 11" (11 1/8" or more) are great.
