  59. It is a newsgroup for discussion of the psychic or mental 
  60. phenomena outside the range of the normal.  If your browser 
  61. is of the correct type, access the newsgroup from [link] here.

  63. 2. What is "normal"?

  66. "Normal" has to do with experience within the range of the 
  67. 5 senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.  PSI, outside 
  68. the 5 senses, is also "normal" in that it constitutes an 
  69. accepted standard of society and occurs naturally.  There 
  70. is scientific testing/analysis, practice, and enhancement 
  71. of PSI ability.

  73. Rather than list the various subjects and give a detailed 
  74. description of them, it is sufficient to say that the 
  75. descriptions of FAQ 1 and 2, above, tell us what may be 
  76. included in the category of "paranormal."  As examples, 
  77. it naturally includes Spirit Communication, Remote Viewing, 
  78. and Reincarnation.

  80. 3. What is the purpose of alt.paranormal?

  83. The central purpose is helpfullness.  We urge any and all 
  84. participating, to answer questions of those who are troubled, 
  85. and who inquire.  If you do not feel qualified, refer them to 
  86. another poster who shows an awareness of particular subjects.  
  87. Generally, to us, the paranormal is not an end, but rather a 
  88. means to an end of spiritual upliftment, happiness, fulfillment, 
  89. and enlightenment for ourselves and others.   Our discussion 
  90. with each other is usually for that central purpose, so we may 
  91. use the insight gained to help others.

  93. 4. What about "skeptics"?

  96. First, we define **so-called "skeptics."  They are sometimes called
  97. "pseudo-skeptics," and should be clearly understood as not in the same
  98. category as "skeptical people" with the true dictionary definition of
  99. "questioning," "doubting" or "suspending judgement."

  104. Next, we state that we believe in free speech, and there are many newsgroups
  105. to exercise that free speech in.  Therefore, debate regarding the existence
  106. of paranormal phenomena should be conducted in newsgroups such as
  107. sci.skeptic.  alt.paranormal is for discussion of  the paranormal.  This is
  108. the view of Steve Reiser, sir@srv.net, founder of alt.paranormal.

  110. 5. What conduct is expected in alt.paranormal, and 
  111.    what about a charter?

  114. When a person writes about us, or our views, in a respectful manner, address
  115. that person in the same way.  If they denigrate you or anyone posting in the
  116. newsgroup, lie about, or as bigots, write degrading remarks about us or our
  117. views of reality, then effectively and explicitly **flame them.

  122. The fact that a person is doubtful, or is sure of the non-existence of
  123. paranormal phenomena, and posts in alt.paranormal, is *not* a reason to
  124. flame them.

  126. If a person thinks the paranormal must be of Satanic origin, that is also
  127. not a reason to flame them.  Their views can be debated in the appropriate
  128. newsgroup of their particular sect.

  130. Advise the person wishing to debate that they place that request in
  131. alt.paranormal, inviting those who wish to engage in that debate to
  132. sci.skeptic, a similar "skeptic," or other sect newsgroup.  Most of those
  133. reading alt.paranormal will have the opportunity to read or participate in
  134. the debate in other newsgroups.

  137. discussion between skeptics and paranormal enthusisasts is appropriate in
  138. that newsgroup:

  162.       for disbelievers to voice their contempt

  165.       proof. Groups discussing the scientific validity

  167.       they have some other designation.

  190.               perhaps debate the research findings in other
  191.               appropriate newsgroups.

  194.               other appropriate newsgroups, so people may
  195.               discuss issues of whether there is such a 
  196.               thing as the paranormal, or whether it is
  197.               necessarily satanic in origin, in those other
  198.               newsgroups.

  200. Neither the author of this FAQ, or any of the participants in the newsgroup,
  201. assume legal liability for advice or insights into the lives of those
  202. participating in the Newsgroup.

  204. No paid readings or advice about personal matters

  207. 6. What about crossposting?

  210. Please do not crosspost to any "skeptic" type newsgroup.  This includes
  211. alt.fan.art-bell in its **present state.  Such crossposting invites
  212. "skeptics."  Crossposting to opposing view sects invites those people also.

  214. When "skeptics" cross-post, (post simultaneously in sci.skeptic and
  215. alt.paranormal) please advise them this is
  216. against both the FAQ's of alt.paranormal, and that of sci.skeptic, and that
  217. you will cease including their
  218. newsgroup in your header.

  240. Extensive discussion about "skeptics" or other sects also invites them to
  241. post in alt.paranormal.

  243. If "skeptics" or other sects wish to engage you in arguments about posting
  244. debate in alt.paranormal, simply copy and paste the appropriate parts of
  245. these FAQ's and post them.  If you argue with them, they will have reason to
  246. continue posting in alt.paranormal.

  248. 8. What is on-topic posting?

  251. We endeavor to post on-topic.  An on-topic post is one about the paranormal.
  252. This includes writing about how
  253. the paranormal subjects are presented and discussed.

  255. 9. What about polite, civil, "skeptics" or actual skeptical people who
  256. continue to attempt debate after being asked to post debates in skeptical
  257. newsgroups?

  260. Please do not flame them, or harass them with excessively repititive
  261. requests if they treat you, and all those in the newsgroup, with respect.
  262. However, it is strongly urged that you do not engage in debate, or try to
  263. prove the existence of the paranormal, in alt.paranormal.  Usually, your
  264. inactivity in that regard discourages future attempts.

  266. 10. Why not debate with polite "skeptics" in alt.paranormal?

  269. The experience of most people with more than a year of positive contribution
  270. in alt.paranormal, and who find value in the subject of the paranormal, is
  271. that most of the people who argue against the existence of the paranormal,
  272. in alt.paranormal, are obnoxious.  The volume, frequency and hostility of
  273. the postings dissuades serious inquirers from reading or posting in the
  274. newsgroup.  There are, of course, some "skeptics" who have
  275. debated with no real harm to the newsgroup, but for the most part it has
  276. been, and would likely continue to be, destructive to the harmonious and
  277. productive flow of information and ideas. The exact type of acceptable
  278. "skeptic," or the names of certain individuals  to debate whether the
  279. paranormal exists, cannot feasibly be placed in these FAQs.

  281. 11. Do we debate about the paranormal?

  284. Civily conducted debate regarding the paranormal, such as methods of ESP
  285. enhancement, how to communicate with spirit guides, how to channel with
  286. automatic writing, the nature of ghosts, etc. is encouraged, but not debate
  287. about whether such phenomena exists, or if all such phenomena is necessarily
  288. Satanic in origin.

  290. 12. What is binding law? 
  291. ========================

  293. These Freqently Asked Questions (FAQ) and answers do not, necessarily,
  294. constitute binding law either on Usenet, or on the Internet Service
  295. Providers.  They serve as guidelines, having been shown to be be the will of
  296. regular posters who have contributed for years, who find paranormal
  297. phenomena to be both real and valuable.

  299. These FAQs are referenced by Internet Service Providers and Usenet if
  300. matters that are written in them also concern matters of Usenet Abuse, spam,
  301. or breaches of netiquette that Usenet or Internet Service Providers normally
  302. take action about.

  307. 13. How does alt.paranormal relate to paranormal-type organizations?

  310. There are no favorites, nor does alt.paranormal represent any sect or
  311. religion.  There are many religions, and many applications of the paranormal.

  313. On the matter of good and evil, or light and darkness, we do favor light,
  314. love, truth, abundance, helpfulness, caring, and discourage darkness, lies,
  315. negativity, hatred, and poverty.

  317. 14. What is a moderator?

  320. There are 2 types of moderators:

  322. A. A moderator of a "moderated" newsgroup. 
  323.  
  324.    That person determines which posts appear and 
  325.    which do not.  Presently, alt.paranormal has 
  326.    no such moderator.

  328. B. A moderator of an officially "unmoderated" newsgroup. 
  329.  
  330.    There are a number of regulars, people who find value in 
  331.    the subject of the paranormal, and they tell 
  332.    what is and is not acceptable by posting
  333.    on the newsgroup.

  335. 15. Who runs alt.paranormal?

  338. The "regulars" of alt.paranormal, which include, but are not limited to
  339. those who's names appear in this section (#reg) of a certain  web page.

  344. more, who finds value in, and has knowledge of, paranormal phenomena -- not
  345. someone who argues against the existence of the paranormal.

  347. 16. Who founded alt.paranormal and when?

  350. It was founded by Steve Reiser, sir@srv.net, in 1990.

  352. 17. What about Advertising?

  355. Short, to the point, advertising is permitted if it concerns the subject of
  356. the newsgroup, and is not excessively repetitive.  As examples, we are not
  357. interested in ads for sex phone lines, get-rich-quick schemes, or health
  358. related items.  This is in accordance with present-day netiquette standards.

  360. 18. What is a "kook"? 
  361. =====================

  363. They are silly, eccentric, or crazy people.  Kooks are quoted on certain
  364. **web pages, and a link is provided to a site with the rules regarding the
  365. nomination and election of people declared to be Usenet Kooks.  Obsessive
  366. behavior by "skeptics" and other sects in alt.paranormal is silly and crazy,
  367. and will probably lead to nomination and election as Kook of the Month: (kOTM).
