  135. With a career that spans more than twenty-five years, it's no great
  136. surprise that James Taylor's musical influence has reached just about every 
  137. corner of the globe. Since leading the singer-songwriter movement in the early
  138. 70s, JT has gone on to refine his style, changing over the years while still
  139. maintaining the musical craftsmanship that garnered so much attention
  140. early in his career.
  141.  
  142. This document--and the newsgroup that spawned it--are testaments to JT's
  143. unusually long and successful career, and also to the worldwide following
  144. that career has created. Just a quick scan of the contributors to this
  145. document makes it obvious that JT is much more than an American star. 
  146. The readers of alt.music.james-taylor come from just about everywhere--
  147. Europe, Asia, South America, Australia--and they all share a love for JT's
  148. music.

  150. This document is constantly being expanded, so you'll probably notice some

  192. James Vernon Taylor was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 12, 1948 in
  193.     Boston General Hospital at 5:06 p.m.
  194. Adult JT stands 6'3" and weighs about 155 pounds.
  195. His mother's name is Gertrude. His father's is Isaac.
  196. Brothers: Alex (1947-1993), Livingston (born 1951), and Hugh (born 1952?)
  197. Sister: Kate (born 1949)
  198. All the siblings have recorded songs.

  200. 1951 - Family moves to Chapel Hill, NC
  201.      - His father, Dr. Isaac Taylor, was the dean of the University of North
  202.         Carolina-Chapel Hill medical school.

  204. 1953 - JT begins attending Milton Academy, a prep school outside Boston.
  205. 1958? - JT hears someone play guitar and decides he wants to learn how.
  206.       - JT had studied cello when he was younger.

  208. 1960 - JT's parents buy him his first guitar.

  210. 1963 - JT meets Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar on Martha's Vineyard.

  225.      - Kootch and Joel O' Brien join JT to form The Flying Machine.

  227.      - The Flying Machine makes studio recordings. Album wasn't released
  228.     until 1971 under the title "James Taylor and the Original
  229.     Flying Machine."

  239.      - November: "James Taylor" released in U.K. with little commercial

  242.      - Enters Austin Riggs, another mental hospital in Massachusetts, partly
  243.     due to his heroin addiction.

  1608.   It contains the entirety of the 1st two albums ("James Taylor" and "Sweet
  1609. Baby James") in piano/vocal format, and (unusually for its day)
  1610. contained a separate section for guitarists featuring some performance notes
  1611. and guitar tablature (a means of writing music for guitar that has becpme
  1612. very popular only in the last 4-5 yrs.)  The tablature parts were written by
  1613. Happy Traum, himself a recording folk musician, and now head of Homespun Tapes
  1614. in Woodstock, which offers music instruction tapes by well known musicians,
  1615. including one by Livingston.  The book also contained the original Apple
  1616. release, an interview with James, a letter he wrote about himself, and a
  1617. reprinted review of a 1970 Carnegie Hall concert. It is easily recognizable by
  1618. its black & white cover photo of a rather severe looking JT.  This book was de
  1619. rigeur for folk guitarists in the 70s. A great many copies were once in
  1620. print, which means it may be easier to locate at used book shops for those
  1621. interested.

  1649. bad influence on him, and convinced her to go away for awhile. They
  1650. bought her a plane ticket, she got on the plane, and en route, it crashed
  1651. and she was killed in the accident. She was the 'sweet dream', and the
  1652. plane was the 'flying machine'.

  1815. black). This was the part I liked most. I prefer the slow songs (Long
  1816. Ago and Far Away, You Can Close Your Eyes, etc.) generally, and their
  1817. performance for so many people created an incredible effect: can you
  1818. imagine 200.000 people in a rock festival almost completely silent,
  1819. sitting on the ground? It was this magic mood that made the experience
  1820. incredible, and the origin of the magic was JT's music.

  1822. - The other instruments entered slowly, up to the moment where the group
  1823. was complete. Then followed "You've Got a Friend", "Fire and Rain",
  1824. "Mexico", etc. All the big hits, everything I wanted to hear. I think
  1825. he finished with "Up on a Roof", but I am not certain.

  1827. The fact that the audience was so big (the biggest from the 10 days of
  1828. the festival) was due to a large extent to JT. He was (is) very famous
  1829. in Brazil, especially for the generation that lived the 70s.

  1871. by a guy in St. Paul, called James Olson.  He used those guitars in "New
  1872. Moon Shine."  He played a Yamaha for a while, but lately he had been
  1873. playing the Olsons only. He owned three Olsons, one of each of the sizes
  1874. Olson made: a "parlor-size," a dreadnought, and a cutaway.

  1876. He was using a Lloyd Bags pickup under the bridge, and when playing live
  1877. he used a Pendulum audio preamp.  This was a 4-band equalizer with a
  1878. variable notch filter that helped him take out "some of the 'oinky,' sort

  1886. up in bass and piano.  But when he drops the low E to a D, he goes back
  1887. to the dreadnought.

  2284. What the Web Is:

  2286. First, the World Wide Web (WWW, or the web), isn't based on any particular
  2287. program.  There are several popular programs to access web resources,
  2288. though.  These programs will allow you to see the text and--if you have the
  2289. right hardware--graphics and sounds provided through the web.
  2290.  
  2291. Most web sites like James Taylor Online are made of multiple pages that you
  2292. access using a web browser such as Lynx (for those limited to text-based
  2293. Internet access), Mosaic (the former web standard), or Netscape (the newer,
  2294. most popular web browser).

  2296. To view web pages, you'll need to run a browser program and instruct it to
  2297. point at the James Taylor Online address.

  2299. Text-Based Web Access:

  2301. If you are limited to typing text commands in a UNIX shell (text-only)
  2302. account, your best bet is to access the web through Lynx.  To see if it's
  2303. installed on your site, simply type this at your UNIX prompt:

  2313. you may be able to download and install Lynx yourself, but it isn't for the
