  283. artists usually get no royalties for the

  456. [SL] Most of the gossip that's been spread about U2 is execrable, but it
  457. is also true that the boys (especially Mr.
  458. Clayton) have a tendency to live their lives without caring about the
  459. publicity consequences. I fully agree with
  460. that! After all, they're already giving us wonderful music, so I don't
  461. feel we have the right to impose them our
  462. moral values, or any specific behavior.

  464. 7.1  Marital Status of all band members
  465. [MJS] Bono-married, Edge-legally separated and otherwise engaged,
  466. Adam-single, Larry-single but under heavy
  467. manners

  469. [PC]  Bono married Alison Stewart on Aug. 21 1982. Edge married Aislinn
  470. O'Sullivan in July 1983, they are
  471. separated but not divorced. Edge was linked to Morleigh Steinberg - the
  472. belly dancer - during the ZooTV tour. 
  473. Adam is still single, he was engaged to "super-model" Naomi Campbell for
  474. several months in 1993. Larry is
  475. single but has a long-term significant other, Anne Acheson, with whom he
  476. has lived for 10+ years.

  493. also has a pet called Missy, but I don't

  497. [MJS] Their official heights are: Bono is 5'8"   Edge is 5'10"   Adam is
  498. 5'10"    Larry is 5'7" This is the second
  499. most popular topic of FAQ mail.  Everyone has a theory.  Unless someone
  500. can provide conclusive prove as to a
  501. correlation between height and musical ability or plans to field an
  502. all-U2 basketball team or a note from the
  503. school nurse attesting to their heights, this answer will stand.

  506. [MJS]  IMHO, Bono has all the talents of a deity but few of the
  507. responsibilities.  (BTW, this is a joke).

  510. [MJS]  There have been several rumors since the ZooTV tours about Bono
  511. starting an acting career.  James
  512. Sheridan said in a Dec. 1992 interview with Movieline magazine that Bono
  513. was taking a year off from music to

  529. is "a sleazy fill-in-the-blank")
  530. [MPZ] A couple of reputable sources, namely Army Archerd in Variety and
  531. the TV show "Extra" have also
  532. reported that Bono will act in the movie (although I'll believe it when I
  533. see it).

  535. [MJS] The recently retitled "Billion Dollar Hotel" is under development
  536. with German director Wim Wenders.
  537.  
  538. [P] Originally, there was NO plan for Bono to act in this movie. That
  539. plan has since reversed itself, and reversed
  540. back to original on at least one occasion. The latest I've heard is that
  541. there is a POSSIBILITY that Bono may do
  542. a "walk-on" part in the movie, one that would require very little acting.

  544. The Limo Driver - 
  545. [MJS] Supposedly this is a film starring or directed by Warren Beatty
  546. that will be filmed in Ireland next year.
  547. The plot follows a taxi driver who becomes obsessed with an actress. I
  548. guess we can rule out at least one role for
  549. Bono.  Hmm, I wonder if it's a "sleazy taxi driver"?

  551. 7.5 Is Edge on the Internet? aka, Does Edge read this newsgroup?
  552. [MJS] Who knows? There have been numerous stories about Edge's
  553. fascination with the Internet , countless
  554. rumors on the newsgroups that Edge is monitoring every thread, and of
  555. course, several miscreants claiming to
  556. be Mr. Evans himself with helpful IDs such as "EDGE" and "THE EDGE.".
  557. Personally, I give these people as
  558. much credence as the ones with IDs like "GOD" and "Jesus" - surely both
  559. the Almighty and the lead guitarist
  560. from U2 have better things to do than waste bandwidth. If Edge is on the
  561. Internet, he's keeping a low profile and
  562. is entitled to his privacy.

  564. 7.9  Bottom Feeders?
  565. [MJS]  I certainly agree with Sergio and hate to give any credence to
  566. most of the slop that passes for "news"
  567. about U2. However, since I recently read on the newsgroups a very
  568. interesting, and utterly untrue, story about
  569. Adam being arrested for heroin possession I have come to the conclusion
  570. that providing truthful answers to
  571. these questions is the best way to end these ridiculous rumors.  I've
  572. tried to present all reasonable viewpoints
  573. here, if you don't agree with what someone has written, be thankful for
  574. freedom of speech and e-mail me your
  575. "version" and I'll include it.

  577. 7.9.1 Until Further Notice, All of the Following is FALSE
  578. Nearly all of the following rumors have been posted on the Usenet within
  579. the past 12 months. To save time,
  580. bandwidth and, hopefully, kill rumors, what follows is a list of rumors
  581. which are ALL FALSE.
  582. - Bono is getting a divorce.
  583. - Bono once had a cocaine habit the size of Alaska. [Ditto for Adam,
  584. Edge, and Larry.]
  585. - Bono had an affair with Christy Turlington (a model) / Stevie Nicks /
  586. Winona Ryder / Maire ni  Brennan (from
  587. Clannad) / Kristen McMenamen (another model) / etc
  588. - Edge has quit the band to start his own Christian music label.
  589. - Larry and Anne have broken up.
  590. - Anne is rarely seen in public because she is actually a space alien who
  591. can only replicate human behavior for
  592. limited periods of time.
  593. - Larry IS Anne.
  594. - On the band's first US tour, they brought a hundred pounds of wacky
  595. weed with them on the plane.
  596. - Bono pierced his ears himself using an upholtery needle Edge carelessly
  597. left lying around
  598. - During the ZooTV tour Bono was kidnapped in Japan by a nefarious cult
  599. which subjected him to sensory
  600. deprivation and hypnotized him to confuse the phrase "smile for the
  601. camera" with "open wide for the dentist,"
  602. hence the many photographs which cause one to admire his mollars.  (Ok,
  603. so I made this one up myself.)
  604.   
  605.  Once more, the above rumors are ALL FALSE. Not one word of truth has
  606. ever been linked to any of these
  607. bone-headisms. Let's make them, "rarely asked questions."

  609.  7.9.2 However, oddly enough . . . . 
  610. This section is devoted to weird rumors from the Usenet and other sources
  611. that turn out to have a grain of truth
  612. to them. 
  613. Q:  Is it true that Bono likes to have his chest shaved?
  614. [MJS] Well, Bono has had his chest shaved once that I know of:

  616. [KM] Bono has an irregular heartbeat.  He had to have an exam for his
  617. insurance company.  He had too much
  618. chest hair for the doctor to be able to hear his heartbeat so they shaved
  619. part of it off.  I looked up irregular
  620. heartbeat - it is caused by stress, anger, smoking, too much caffeine in
  621. coffee or tea.  It is not fatal and it's ok to
  622. have one.

  624. [MJS] Whether or not Bono enjoyed having his chest shaved is unknown at
  625. this time.

  627. Q: I heard that Bono stripped in the middle of a crowded restaurant.
  628. [MJS] This is true. From Newsday March 27, 1992:  At a dinner earlier
  629. this week at London's celebrity haunt,
  630. Nikita, Bono surprised his 18 dinner guests by removing all his clothes 
  631. - including his black bikini briefs  - for
  632. no apparent reason. During the Russian meal of mainly vodka and caviar,
  633. we're told the Irish rocker sat naked
  634. and acted as if being nude in a plush, crowded restaurant was the most
  635. natural thing in the world. Which, in
  636. some quarters, we suppose it is. "Sometimes people drink vodka and do
  637. strange things," Nikita owner Sylvain
  638. Borsi told us. But didn't he find Bono's behavior a bit eccentric, to say
  639. the least? "No, he was very nice and very
  640. civilized," Borsi said. "I think he just felt more comfortable with
  641. nothing on."
  642.    But he had a really good reason! From Newsday March 30, 1992 : His
  643. spokesman says Bono was actually
  644. being interviewed by a journalist during dinner when the Irish rocker
  645. decided to undress, as we reported. "The
  646. writer was so unimaginative, so frozen, so unloose that Bono thought it
  647. would be a good idea to take his clothes
  648. off," the spokesman said. "And there wasn't much of a reaction."

  650. 7.9.3   What's the deal with Bono's guesthouse?
  651. [CB] Bono used to live in Bray, where he had a small Martello tower
  652. (these were watchtowers built to guard the
  653. coast). In interviews it was often referred to  as his 'castle', when all
  654. it was a spiral staircase with a wall around
  655. it. James Joyce used to live in a similar one close by, so Bono must have
  656. thought it ultra cool. When he moved,
  657. he kept the thing, and rented it out to people for a pound a month, or
  658. something like that. I believe Shane
  659. McGowan lived there for a while.
