  38.       | Welcome to soc.motss, the oldest newsgroup for lesbian and
  39.       | gay people. This FAQ introduces our unique discussion
  40.       | environment.

  42.       | The easiest, most effective approach is to spend time in
  43.       | listening mode, that is, to read the articles and observe
  44.       | what goes on in soc.motss. You'll gain a feel for the range
  45.       | of viewpoints expressed and for our varied personal styles.

  47.       | You don't have to be gay or lesbian yourself to participate,
  48.       | but bigots are not welcome. Soc.motss has zero tolerance for
  49.       | homophobia, sexism, misogyny and racism. If you're clear
  50.       | about that, feel free to join any discussion that interests
  51.       | you or to start a new topic.

  53.       | If you decide to stay around, the complete FAQ (see below)
  54.       | explains the group's history, in-group lingo and much more.
  55.       | It tries to help you feel at ease in our midst. However,
  56.       | there are a couple things you need to know right away:

  58.       |    * The acronym "motss" stands for "members of the same
  59.       |      sex". It's not the most obvious name, but it's the
  60.       |      original one and it has stuck. There are various ways
  61.       |      to pronounce soc.motss: the two most common ones are
  62.       |      "soash-mahts" and "sock-dot-mahts".

  64.       |    * Soc.motss is definitely NOT for discussion of whether
  65.       |      homosexuality is good or bad, natural or unnatural,
  66.       |      moral or immoral; other groups exist expressly for
  67.       |      debate on those topics.
