  61. Welcome to misc.kids, the newsgroup for parents, soon-to-be parents, and other
  62. people interested in children. In this group, we discuss issues relevant to
  63. pregnancy and child rearing, solicit advice from other netters on a host of
  64. parenting concerns, and generally seek and provide support and encouragement
  65. with respect to raising kids. This is a group intended for parents of children
  66. of *all* ages, including teenagers and adult children. This document introduces
  67. new readers both to the preferred etiquette for misc.kids and to a service we
  68. have devised in this group: a compilation of files of Frequently Asked
  69. Questions (FAQ).

  74.                        *** Netiquette on misc.kids ***
  75.  
  76. Most of the guidelines here are the same as in news.announce.newusers. In fact,
  77. it is *strongly* recommended that you read the etiquette guidelines in
  78. news.announce.newusers (or in any other introductory text on news readers)
  79. before you post any articles. 
  80.  
  81.    * misc.kids is a discussion group. Please do not post binaries. There are
  82.      groups specifically chartered for this purpose. misc.kids already has a
  83.      tremendous amount of traffic and the extra bandwidth used by these files  
  84.      is not appreciated.  Please remember that someone has to pay for all 
  85.      those bytes to be trasmitted around the world.
  86.    
  87.    * Please do not post advertisements. misc.kids is a non-commercial
  88.      newsgroup. Reviews and discussions of commercial products relating to
  89.      children are appropriate, although they would be more appropriate      
  90.      in misc.kids.consumers.
  91.  
  92.    * Please be very careful when asking for or giving medical advice. It is
  93.      one thing to state what your experience with X might have been, and
  94.      another thing entirely to dispense medical advice to complete
  95.      strangers. If you are asking for medical advice, please consider the
  96.      source, and consult with a trusted medical professional before using
  97.      any advice you obtain from the net. 
  98.  
  99.    * Please respond via e-mail whenever possible; if the original poster was
  100.      soliciting advice/information, s/he should post a summary to the net.
  101.      This helps cut down on net traffic. 
  102.  
  103.    * If someone takes the time and energy to respond to a query which you have
  104.      posted, *please* extend some common courtesy by acknowledging his/her
  105.      response via e-mail. A simple "thank you" should suffice in most
  106.      instances. 
  107.  
  108.    * Please read all follow-ups before posting one of your own; in many cases,
  109.      someone else has already covered the same point. 
  110.  
  111.    * Please limit the amount of material included from previous postings as
  112.      much as possible, and try to be concise. Certainly, .signatures should
  113.      be excised. Remember that most of the audience for misc.kids are busy
  114.      parents. However, please make sure you include enough of the original
  115.      article so as to make your follow-up sensible. (For example,
  116.      follow-ups such as "I totally agree!" with no material included from
  117.      the previous article make no sense at all, due to the nature of news
  118.      readers. And of course, if *ALL* that you want to say is "I totally
  119.      agree!", that should certainly be handled via private e-mail.) 
  120.  
  121.    * Please watch your attributions carefully; avoid misquotes and
  122.      misconstructions. 
  123.  
  124.    * Please avoid cross-postings to other newsgroups unless you are absolutely
  125.      sure there is relevance to the other group(s). There is usually
  126.      nothing that will spark a flame war faster than to cross-post an
  127.      article to groups such as soc.men, soc.women, or alt.sex. If you feel
  128.      you must cross-post or respond to a cross-posting, please delete
  129.      misc.kids from the Newsgroups line as soon as the relevance to this
  130.      newsgroup disappears. 
  131.  
  132.    * Please check your Subject line carefully! If you are starting a new
  133.      thread, do not use the standard follow-up command. (If you aren't sure
  134.      about how to post a new article, read some help articles, or read
  135.      news.announce.newusers (strongly recommended reading for any new
  136.      netter anyway).) Similarly, if you want folks to read your article,
  137.      and especially, if you want people to offer advice/comments, tailor
  138.      your Subject line accordingly. This is a very busy newsgroup, and
  139.      Subject lines that are vague might not catch the eye of the very
  140.      people who might have something to offer. For example, if you have
  141.      questions about breastfeeding and sibling rivalry, please take the
  142.      time to write two separate articles with appropriate Subject lines. 
  143.  
  144.    * Please remember that this newsgroup has a world-wide readership. With
  145.      that in mind, please note the following: First, readers whose primary
  146.      language is not English might not know what a VBAC (Vaginal Birth
  147.      After Cesarian) is, or what Tylenol is. (There is an FAQ file entitled
  148.      "Acronyms" -- please check the FAQ File Index for instructions on how
  149.      to request that file.) Second, check your Distribution line before
  150.      posting an article. If you are looking for an occasional babysitter in
  151.      Idaho, you're unlikely to find interested readers in New Zealand!
  152.      Third, please be understanding and patient with spelling or style
  153.      errors made by people who are obviously posting from a non-English
  154.      speaking country. (For that matter, spelling and/or grammatical errors
  155.      should not be pointed out via the newsgroup, but through private
  156.      e-mail if you feel it is absolutely necessary to show someone the
  157.      error of their ways.) 
  158.  
  159.    * Before posting an article to misc.kids, please be sure it is actually
  160.      relevant to parenting or children. Misc.kids can be a great source of
  161.      support, but it is not the only newsgroup on Usenet. Thus, queries
  162.      regarding the best dishwasher to get would be entirely inappropriate
  163.      for this newsgroup. 
  164.  
  165.    * While there is a newsgroup (alt.kids-talk) for non-adults to participate
  166.      in, comments from children and teens are very welcome in this
  167.      newsgroup. 
  168.  
  169.    * Please refrain from name-calling, tantrums or other hysterics-- we get
  170.      enough of that from our children :-).
