  82.     Description
  83.
  84.         This document provides a partial -- and not comprehensive -- list
  85.         of implementations of Emacs-type editors and literature about such
  86.         editors. You can help make it more comprehensive by sending me
  87.         additional information and/or updates.
  88.
  89.         This document is also gradually acquiring the role of a repository
  90.         of (at least) Emacs-related history. While that subject requires a
  91.         book to itself, this document will probably serve until someone
  92.         (_not_ me!) writes one.
  93.
  94.         This document is available via anonymous FTP and WWW. See above
  95.         URLs.
  96.
  97.         To be included in this list:
  98.
  99.         o   A piece of literature should be a book, manual, article, paper,
  100.             or something that covers (or mentions) Emacs in particular or
  101.             text editing techniques in general. Specifically excluded are
  102.             items that are only of interest to non-Emacs users (a book on
  103.             "how to use vi") or vendor manuals for Emacs implementations
  104.             (as those are implicitly included in the implementations).
  105.             Non-vendor (i.e., third party) manuals are included.
  106.
  107.         o   An implementation must either (1) be "advertised" as being an
  108.             Emacs-type editor or (2) be extensible and come with an Emacs
  109.             command set "mode" already written. Editors that are extensible
  110.             but do not come with such a mode (i.e., you have to write it
  111.             yourself) are not listed.
  112.
  113.        The following information is included for each implementation:
  114.
  115.         The *NAME* line contains the name of the implementation.
  116.         Implementations are listed alphabetically by name. Acronym
  117.         expansions are listed in ()s. Other acronyms:
  118.
  119.             TECO    TAPE Editor and COrrector
  120.                     (later: Text Editor and COrrector)
  121.             EMACS   Editor MACroS
  122.
  123.         The *LAST* *CHANGED/VERIFIED* line contains the date that the entry was
  124.         last changed or an explict "looks ok to me" was received. This
  125.         field was added 1994-12-20, so all entries were initialized to that
  126.         value.
  127.
  128.         The *ORIGINAL* *DISTRIBUTION* is the date (or partial date) of the
  129.         first release. It is in YYYY-MM-DD format.
  130.
  131.         The *VERSION* is the latest known version. It is probably out of
  132.         date.
  133.
  134.         The *BASE* *LANGUAGE* is the language that you need a compiler or
  135.         interpreter for in order to use the editor. If the software is
  136.         distributed as a pre-compiled binary, this should be the language
  137.         that the program was written in.
  138.
  139.         The *IMPLEMENTATION* *LANGUAGE* is the language that the bulk of the
  140.         implementation is written in.
  141.
  142.         The *EXTENSION* *LANGUAGE* is the (often custom or modified) language
  143.         that the is used when altering or writing extensions to the
  144.         implementation. It is "none" if there is no extension language.
  145.
  146.         The *SCOPE* is either "command set" or "extensible." In the first
  147.         case, the implementation offers a basic Emacs command set; however
  148.         the user cannot readily change what the commands do. In the second
  149.         case, the user can fully control what all of the commands do.
  150.
  151.         The *REQUIREMENTS* is a brief characterization of what hardware or
  152.         software is required. The purpose of this item is to offer a broad
  153.         selection key; not be a comprehensive list. You should consult the
  154.         implementation (for free software) or the vendor to find out
  155.         whether a specific implementation works in your environment. For
  156.         example:
  157.
  158.         o   "UNIX" refers to any version of UNIX(tm) from any vendor.
  159.         o   "IBM PC" is used to cover MS/DOS, OS/2, and Windows
  160.             implementations.
  161.
  162.         (Starting Dec 1994 the list will support an additional level of
  163.         detail for IBM PCs.)
  164.
  165.         o   "DOS" refers to MS/DOS support. May also run under Windows or
  166.             OS/2 in some mode. - "Windows" refers to Microsoft Windows support.
  167.         o   "OS/2" refers to to OS/2 support. - "Windows NT" refers to
  168.             Microsoft Windows NT support.
  169.
  170.         The *ORGANIZATION* is the name of and contact information for the
  171.         implementor OR >CURRENT MAINTAINER<.
  172.
  173.         The *STATUS* is one of
  174.
  175.         o   no longer available: Self-explanatory.
  176.         o   free: The implementation is available to most people at no
  177.             charge. Even such "free" implementations may have restrictions:
  178.             consult information about the particular implementation. Where
  179.             available, information on how to obtain a copy is also listed.
  180.         o   not free: The implementation is for sale. Contact the vendor
  181.             for specifics.
  182.
  183.         Many of the names of the implementations in this list are
  184.         trademarked. Specific trademarks are not called out.
  185.
  186.         Full source code is available for all of the free implementations.
  187.         Source availability varies among the not free implementations:
  188.         check with the vendor before you buy.

  381.             This is a bare-bones Japanese version of EMACS.  It's missing all
  382.             the cool GNU-stuff (including help),  but it does do split-
  383.             screening and all of the cursor/text editing commands that I

  390.             fastest version of EMACS for the Mac.  It is also the most

  459.         Addendum from Jesper Larsson <Jesper.Larsson@dna.lth.se>: This is
  460.         not quite correct. First, if "misAEr" is the Swedish word, "AE"
  461.         should not be the "ae" glyph (not used in Swedish -- maybe it's
  462.         spelled that way in Norwegian), but an "a" with two dots above
  463.         it. Secondly, this word actually means "destitution" or "penury".
  464.         It is closely related to the English word "misery". [ I am _not_

  772.         _Note:_ Emacs for NeXTstep 4.1 is a superset of GNU Emacs 19.28
  773.         with which it shares most of the code. The main change is that this
  774.         Emacs supports the NeXTstep window system on the same level as GNU
  775.         Emacs supports the X window system. It continues to fully support
  776.         the X window system as well.
  777.
  778.         Also, this may be new information on the same release: Emacs.app, a
  779.         full port of GNU Emacs to NeXTstep also supporting NS features,
  780.         runs on Intel, NeXT, and HP hardware.
  781.
  782.         There are also two mailing lists for Emacs for NS,
  783.         <emacs-for-ns-users@lists.princeton.edu> and
  784.         <emacs-for-ns-announce@lists.princeton.edu>. The former is intended
  785.         for general discussion and allows anybody to post. The latter
  786.         restricts posting and should contain only a handful of
  787.         announcements of new releases every year. Both of these lists are
  788.         handled by the CREN Listproc which means that you can subscribe and
  789.         unsubscribe automatically. For example, to subscribe to
  790.         emacs-for-ns-users I'd send a message with the content `SUBSCRIBE
  791.         emacs-for-ns-users Carl Edman' to <listproc@lists.princeton.edu>.
  792.         For more details write to the same address with the content `HELP'.

  795.
  796.         ** So why in the world is it called version 4.1 ? To avoid
  797.         confusion with the older Emacs.app interface (lately up to
  798.         version 3.1) which is completely unrelated except for the fact
  799.         that its author, Michael Brouwer, has been a major contributor to
  800.         this project as well. And even he has replaced the old Emacs.app

  1202.             From a user:
  1203.
1204.         ...and I think it is worth to mention that JED (which is the
1205.         "GNUishest" of all the non-GNU implementations -- almost *every*
1206.         keystroke is like within GNU/XEmacs) has the complete editing
1207.         part of the AUCTEX-package built in, with BibTeX-mode, so if you
1208.         have to edit La/BibTeX-source outside your home/business, JED
1209.         might be your first choice.
  1210.
1211.         And, what's more than that: JED runs on the smallest PC systems
1212.         used these days: in the library etc. I take my Toshiba T1000
1213.         (which was the first laptop and has a 4.77 MHz CPU in it: 512 KB
1214.         RAM, *no* HD and a single FD) -- and works like a charm since it
1215.         loads the necessary modules into memory only when needed (dired
  1216.         etc.).
  1217.
1218.         Unlike "freemacs" (which was my favourite editor before JED) it
1219.         can manage files over 64 KBytes in size and it is further under
  1220.         development.
  1221.
1222.         Since it runs on Linux to (with a special XJed binary) I use it
1223.         for quick tasks on my desktop, too.

  2327.
2328.         _Note_ from Carl Hoffman: Probably Multics Emacs' greatest claims
2329.         to fame are (1) having been the first to popularize the notion of
  2330.         using a Lisp-like extension language which non-expert programmers
2331.         could use and understand, and (2) originating certain constructs
2332.         (e.g. "save-excursion", etc.) which today survive in GNU Emacs.
  2333.
2334.         _Note_ from Bernard Greenberg: Multics Emacs was implemented in
2335.         Multics MacLisp, also known as Version 2 Lisp. Multics Emacs was
2336.         the first and only Multics Software Product in Lisp -- PL/I was the
  2337.         official system language.
  2338.
2339.         The notion of using Lisp for a mainframe product whose native
2340.         language was not Lisp was radical at the time. I chose Lisp because
2341.         of the possibility of implementing many small, cheap, modular,
  2342.         easily-replaceable functions (not a possibility in PL/I), having
2343.         found this to be a major feature of an earlier private tool I
  2344.         implemented in Multics MacLisp.
  2345.
2346.         The notion of using Lisp on the Lisp machine (for Eine, and later
2347.         Zwei) was a requirement, not an innovation. It did not speak to the
2348.         issues of the suitability of Lisp for such a task, nor to that of
2349.         what would be the best language for such a task. The idea of
2350.         -choosing- Lisp for a mainframe editor implementation was innovated
2351.         here. The idea of augmenting Multics TECO, and that of writing a
2352.         TECO-like editor gut in flat-out PL/I were rejected by me in favor
2353.         of a Lisp program that implemented editor functionality.
  2354.
2355.         Inspired by the TECO in which EMACS (on ITS, then the only program
2356.         using that name) was implemented, I designed a TECO-like control
2357.         and "point" manipulation model in a Lisp framework, which I thought
2358.         was natural and obvious, not at all similar to the buffer-pointer
2359.         passing model of the Lisp Machine editors. The natural combination
2360.         of Lisp macrology and scoping with this type of model proved to be
2361.         flexible, powerful, and appealing: this model caught on, and is now
2362.         the basis of everything in the world; the Lisp machine's did not.
2363.         The intellectual lineage of GNU Emacs, in these regards, comes
2364.         directly from James Gosling's Emacs, which came directly from (and
2365.         was credited to) Multics Emacs.
  2366.
2367.         I rank the significant innovations of Multics Emacs as: (1)
2368.         Explicitly-designed extension languages, which could be understood
2369.         and used by non-experts. (2) Lisp as an editor implementation
  2370.         language. (3) Lisp and Lisp-macros as an extension language. (4) A
2371.         control regime and macrology, including many names (e.g.,
2372.         "save-excursion"), that have become today become semi-standard
2373.         through GNU Emacs and other systems.
  2374.
2375.         Major extensions that became part of the product should also be
2376.         credited to Richard Lamson, Gary Palter, and William York, who
2377.         became my guerilla band, back then.

2904.         Z80EMACS is a port of microemacs 3.6 to the CP/M operating system.
2905.         Microemacs keeps all data in memory, and CP/M must live in a 64KB
2906.         address space. By clever use of overlays and byte-squeezing and
2907.         tuning, Z80EMACS is able to edit files of size 30KB! microemacs 3.6
2908.         had no facility for remapping the keyboard bindings. Z80EMACS does
2909.         it with an offline utility. Z80EMACS uses overlays extensively, but
2910.         the most frequently used commands are all either in the root
2911.         segment or in one particular overlay. Since this overlay is usually
2912.         already in memory, performance is quite good, even when running
2913.         from floppies. Z80EMACS has the ability to edit multiple files,
2914.         display multiple windows, and do keyboard macros, among other
2915.         things. This makes it the spiffiest CP/M editor you could ever hope
2916.         to see. Z80EMACS comes with source and binaries; it was compiled
2917.         with AZTEC C, which few CP/Mmers have, so the binaries are more
2918.         likely to be useful than the source.
