  43. INTRODUCTION
  44. ====================
  45. The purpose of the alt.comp.virus newsgroup is to provide a forum for 
  46. discussion of computer virus issues.
  47.  
  48. "Computer virus issues" are defined as follows: issues relating to the 
  49. creation, dissemination, prevention, detection, and removal of computer 
  50. viruses.  Note that the discussion of these is not the same as doing them.
  51. For example, discussing the dissemination of computer viruses is OK, but 
  52. spreading them via the newsgroup is not.
  53.  
  54. "Computer viruses" are defined as programs (blocks of executable code) 
  55. which attach themselves to, overwrite or otherwise replace another program
  56. in order to reproduce itself without the knowledge of the PC user. See the
  57. alt.comp.virus FAQ for a more thorough definition.

  60. ON-TOPIC POSTS
  61. ====================
  62. Posts of the following types are expected (these are merely examples; 
  63. other topics may come up that are not listed here, but are nevertheless 
  64. still on-topic):

  66. a. Questions concerning computer viruses and anti-virus products.
  67.  
  68. b. Experiences with viruses and anti-virus products.  
  69.  
  70. c. Discussions of tests of anti-virus products.
  71.  
  72. d. Announcements of conferences, conventions, etc. related to computer 
  73.    viruses.
  74.  
  75. e. Announcements of anti-virus product updates or new anti-virus products. 
  76.    Announcements of a commercial nature are acceptable, provided they are 
  77.    brief and to the point (announcing a URL is usually the best way to do 
  78.    this).

  80. f. Conjecture as to the future of computer virus/anti-virus technology.

  83. UNWELCOME POSTS
  84. ====================
  85. Posts of the following types are considered to be unwelcome (Types of
  86. posts not listed here may be considered unwelcome as well; these are
  87. just the most common examples):

  89. a. Binaries of any sort.  If you want to distribute binaries of any sort, 
  90.    put them on a web page or FTP site (with the sysadmin's approval) and 
  91.    post the address where they may be found.  That way, you don't abuse 
  92.    UseNet in the process.  
  93.  
  94. b. Source code that is not relevant to the discussion.  Posting snippets
  95.    of source code to elaborate on a point or further the discussion is 
  96.    fine, but posting source code without relevance to the discussion is 
  97.    unwelcome.  Post it on a web page or FTP site (as above) or in the 
  98.    newsgroup alt.comp.virus.source.code.

  100. c. Posts warning of 'viruses' which are in fact hoaxes.  See:

  104.    and check if this new 'virus' is listed before posting the hoax message 
  105.    and propagating the hoax further.  Asking about hoaxes is fine, but 
  106.    don't post the full text of the warning (just the name of the 'virus'
  107.    will suffice to check whether it's a hoax).

  109. d. Advertising or product announcements of non-virus related items.
  110.  
  111. e. Posts that do nothing more than ask for viruses or source code.  If you 
  112.    want viruses, look for them yourself.  They aren't that hard to find.

  115. OTHER GUIDELINES
  116. ====================
  117. Please avoid posting in HTML.  It isn't readable by a significant portion 
  118. of the group's members.  Plain ASCII text is universally readable, so it is 
  119. preferable.

  121. Please try to limit cross posting of posts outside alt.comp.virus.  Posting
  122. to directly-related groups is fine, but keep in mind that follow-ups to 
  123. your post will also be posted in cross-posted groups.

  125. Check your headers before you post anyway, just to make sure where your 
  126. post is going.

  128. Occasional jokes are welcome. If you don't find any humor in life, try 
  129. another newsgroup.
  130.  
  131. Trolls will be subjected to bone-crushing wrist locks and the occasional 
  132. wedgie.

  134. These guidelines do not restrict how you talk about computer viruses, as 
  135. much as they restrict the conversations to computer virus related issues. 
  136. We are suggesting guidelines for this newsgroup so that it will be 
  137. enjoyable for everyone, without limiting peopleÆs right to express their 
  138. views openly, even if they are unpopular. We donÆt like the idea of 
  139. censorship. We do like the idea of proposed rules of conduct and common 
  140. courtesy.

  144. ====================
  145. Enforcement Provision: Posts clearly in violation of these guidelines (i.e. 
  146. posts of virus binaries) will often result in complaints by readers of 
  147. a.c.v. to the Internet Service Provider of the person posting the unwanted 
  148. material. Alternatively or in addition, readers of the group may killfile 
  149. or otherwise ignore the offender.  UseNet is a lonely place if nobody 
  150. replies to your posts.
