  536.     Caltech Muslim Students Group offers number of files on its
  537.     ftp server. These files have been extracted from different
  538.     forums and are in compressed (in UNIX) format.

  544. Primer on getting documents from the Caltech MSA ftp site.
  545.  
  546. 1. To access the site, you should log into a UNIX account.  If you
  547. don't have one, get one.  The reason that UNIX is preferred is that it
  548. is currently the operating system of choice in academic spheres which
  549. are capable of using ftp.  The other reason that UNIX is used is that
  550. efficient data compression routines are standardly packaged with UNIX,
  551. and we can thus pack more information into the limited space that we
  552. are allocated for the site.
  553.  
  554. 2.  The next step is to run ftp (stands for File Transfer
  555. Protocol). The information is stored at punisher.caltech.edu (this is
  556. called the location of the site).  To do this type the following at
  557. the command prompt:
  558.  
  559. % ftp punisher.caltech.edu
  560.  
  561. Alternatively, you can start up ftp and go to punisher within it, like
  562. this:
  563.  
  564. % ftp
  565. ftp> open punisher.caltech.edu
  566.  
  567. Note that the "ftp>" is a prompt provided by the ftp program.
  568.  
  569. 3. At this point ftp will ask for a name.  The information is public,
  570. so you'll want to use anonymous ftp.  That is, at the name prompt,
  571. type anonymous.
  572.  
  573. Name: anonymous
  574.  
  575. 4. Then ftp will say it's okay, but you need to send identification as
  576. the password.  This means that when it asks you for a password, you
  577. type in your e-mail address.
  578.  
  579. Password: <your address>         (for example: mughal@caltech.edu)
  580.  
  581. 5. Now you are in the Caltech system.  The next step is to get to the
  582. Muslim Student's association directory.  The full name of the
  583. directory is /home/ftp/pub/calmsa.  However, you are placed into the
  584. /home/ftp directory when you get in.  To get to the msa directory,
  585. then, type:
  586.  
  587. ftp> cd pub/calmsa
  588.  
  589. Note, the on-line Quran translation is located in a subdirectory of
  590. the calmsa directory named Quran.  To get into it, use "cd Quran".
  591. Also, you can use the command "ls", as in UNIX, to list the files in
  592. the directory that you are currently in.
  593.  
  594. 6. At this point you can retrieve files.  Things go more quickly if
  595. you are in binary mode.  Thus, you tell ftp,
  596.  
  597. ftp> mode bin
  598.  
  599. 7. To get a file, you simply use the command get.  For example,
  600.  
  601. ftp> get thefileIwant.Z
  602.  
  603. A list of files with brief descriptions is located in the file README.
  604. It is NOT compressed, so you can simply read it.
  605.  
  606. 8. Notice that the file from get has a .Z extension.  This is because
  607. it is compressed.  To uncompress it, you need to get out of ftp.  The
  608. command is "bye".  At the command line, the command to uncompress,
  609. surprisingly enough, is "uncompress"
  610.

  612. % uncompress thefileIwant
  613.  
  614. 9. Now you can print the file, more it, whatever...

  956.     the reader with selective reading ability.

  987.         Newsletter is  displayed.  This  will  display  a menu. Move the
  988.         pointer to the Fourth sub-menu: `Find' and keep moving it to the
  989.         arrow at right. This will give you another menu.The second entry
  990.         in this new menu is `Find  Selection'.  Take the pointer to this
  991.         entry and release the right  mouse  button.  It will take you to
  992.         that particular article.
