  23. The following is a list of currently active USENET newsgroups as of
  24. 2 Dec 1996.  This list does not include the gatewayed Internet newsgroups
  25. (see below).  The groups distributed worldwide are divided into eight
  26. broad classifications: "comp", "humanities", "misc", "news", "rec",
  27. "sci", "soc", and "talk".  Each of these classifications is organized
  28. into groups and subgroups according to topic.
  29.  
  30. "comp"  Topics of interest to both computer professionals and
  31.     hobbyists, including topics in computer science, software
  32.     source, and information on hardware and software systems.
  33.  
  34. "humanities"
  35.         Professional and amateur topics in the arts & humanities.
  36.  
  37. "misc"  Groups addressing themes not easily classified under any of the
  38.     other headings or which incorporate themes from multiple
  39.     categories.
  40.  
  41. "news"    Groups concerned with the news network and software themselves.
  42.  
  43. "rec"    Groups oriented towards the arts, hobbies and recreational
  44.         activities.
  45.  
  46. "sci"   Discussions marked by special and usually practical knowledge,
  47.     relating to research in or application of the established
  48.     sciences.
  49.  
  50. "soc"    Groups primarily addressing social issues and socializing.
  51.  
  52. "talk"    Groups largely debate-oriented and tending to feature long
  53.     discussions without resolution and without appreciable amounts
  54.     of generally useful information.

  56. These "world" newsgroups are (usually) circulated around the entire
  57. USENET -- this implies world-wide distribution.  Not all groups
  58. actually enjoy such wide distribution, however.  Some sites take only
  59. a selected subset of the more "technical" groups, and controversial
  60. "noise" groups are often not carried by many sites (these groups are
  61. often under the "talk" and "soc" classifications).  Many sites do not
  62. carry some or all of the comp.binaries groups.
  63.  
  64. There are groups in other subcategories, but they are local: to
  65. institutions, to geographic regions, etc. and they are not listed
  66. here.  Note that these distribution categories can be used to restrict
  67. the propagation of news articles.  Currently, distributions include:
  68.     world        worldwide distribution (default)
  69.     can        limited (mostly) to Canada
  70.     eunet        limited (mostly) to European sites in EUNet
  71.     na        limited (mostly) to North America
  72.     usa        limited (mostly) to the United States
  73. There may be other regional and local distribution categories available
  74. at your site.  Most US states have distribution categories named after
  75. the two letter abbreviation for that state or category (e.g., "ga" for
  76. Georgia, "nj" for New Jersey). Please use an appropriate distribution
  77. category if your article is not likely to be of interest to USENET
  78. readers worldwide.
