  5. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
  6.  
  7. Please read the README.FIRST file - found at the root level of this server - 
  8. for general information and instructions on unarchiving and uncompressing
  9. files (files with the ".sit", ".hqx", ".zip", ".tar", and ".Z" extensions).

  11. The README.BROCHURE also contains helpful descriptions of this and other
  12. software offered on the ftp server.

  15. NCSA LAYOUT
  16.  
  17. This is a graphics editing package that allows the user to create professional 
  18. quality color Layouts of scientific data with the ability to add annotations, 
  19. grid lines, and tick marks.  When opening an HDF file in NCSA Layout 1.3, a 
  20. list of the contents of the file is brought up so the user may choose from the
  21. existing elements of the file.

  23. The NCSA Layout1.3 distribution contains two Mac applications, Layout1.3 and
  24. Layout1.3 LCsi.  The LCsi version will run on the Mac LC or SI machines without
  25. the 68881 math coprocessor.  The other version takes advantage of the math
  26. coprocessor to make computation faster.

  30. The "misc" directory contains the laybat application....
  31.  
  32. The sample file includes Layouts, images, and palettes.  The Layouts include 
  33. "Shock Wave" and "vortex2.layout".  "Shock Wave" is described in the Tutorial 
  34. section of the documentation.  "vortex2.layout" is an example of what can be 
  35. created demonstrating the pasting abilities of NCSA Layout 1.3.  The drawing 
  36. annotations were created in MacDraw and pasted into NCSA Layout.  The images 
  37. folder contain two examples of images that can be loaded into NCSA Layout 1.3.
  38. The palettes folder contains several example palettes.

  40. The source file includes the source and make files for the application, the 
  41. color menu definition, and HDF file routines.  The source code was compiled 
  42. using MPW 3.2.

  45. NOTES BUGS
  46.  
  47. Undo is always dimmed.  This is because you cannot undo.  Sorry!
  48.  
  49. File error checking is not as thorough as it should be.  Not all file 
  50. errors are reported to the user (i.e. disk full).
  51.  
  52. The color pop up menus do not work properly with the init 
  53. "ScrollMBar".
  54.
