  1.        HELP ON USING THE MAIL INTERFACE AT VI/EX ARCHIVE alf.uib.no

  4.  BEWARE: If you have anon. ftp capability, please use it instead of
  5.      this mailserver (see below).
  6.  
  7.  VI/EX Archive alf.uib.no, and its mirrors have the most complete, and
  8.  the biggest publically available archive containing VI/EX stuff.
  9.  
  10.  To access the mailer, just send a mail message to  buboo@alf.uib.no
  11.  with no message in the body, just a subject line giving the keyword GET.
  12.  
  13.  Example of a simple request to get one of the INDEX files:

  21.  The Mailserver only understands the GET command....in UPPER CASE.
  22.  
  23.  The Mailserver will send a Control File for each file requested. The
  24.  control file will give you status information about your request.
  25.  The mailserver can only handle ONE FILE PER REQUEST. If you want more than
  26.  one file, send a separate request for each file.
  27.  
  28.  DO NOT request the whole archive! If you request the whole archive all 
  29.  at one time I will report you to your site admin. If you do want the 
  30.  whole archive, please request a small number (max 10) of files every day. 
  31.  
  32.  Before fetching a file, think: "Do I realy need this file, or is it just
  33.  'nice to have it' ?"
  34.  
  35.  All files will be run thru uuencode (1) before mailng, even textfiles.
  36.  To extract a requested file, use the command uudecode (1).
  37.  IF you request a file from the macros/ area, you must either
  38.  
  39.      edit the header of the uuencoded section in the mail deleting
  40.      the folowing word:  macros/  (Remember the slash !)
  41.  OR
  42.      create a subdirectory called macros, and run uudecode about the
  43.      macros directory.
  44.  
  45.  If you do not get a reply within a reasonable time, please do not send
  46.  another request for the file(s). The mailserver is only run at max 6
  47.  times a day. Even less in the weekends and holidays.
  48.  
  49.  Please report any problems or question to buboo@alf.uib.no

  51.  FTP:
  52.    Remeber that those who allow anon-ftp are very kind. Please do not
  53.    misuse or abuse this privilege.
  54.    Think twice before downloading, esp if you are a long-distance ftp' er.
  55.  
  56.    If you are going to use FTP, use the site that is the closest to you
  57.    counting NET-VICE. If you don't know what I'm talking about, please 
  58.    ask someone who does (like  your system administrator).
  59.  
  60.    IF YOU HAVE FTP-ACCESS, DO *NOT* USE THE MAILSERVER. Not even if you
  61.    temporarily cannot reach alf.uib.no or its mirrors.
  62.    The mirroring sites are always promptly updated.
  63.  
  64.    Why YOU shold use the site closest to you NET-VICE:
  65.      - Faster access.
  66.      - Reducing the net load.
  67.      - Keeping the site on the net. 
  68.  
  69.    The main archive is in Bergen, Norway, EUROPE. 
  70.    alf.uib.no is mirrored at sites around the world. If you find a
  71.    site nearer to you than alf.uib.no, please use that site. 
  72.    The mirroing sites are ALWAYS updated.
  73.  
  74.    Please do NOT use ftp to the sites during peak hours at the various 
  75.    locations. Please respect this because if there is too much ftp'ing 
  76.    going on in prime time to the various places, the ftp site may have to 
  77.    shut down.  NONE OF US WOULD WANT THAT, WOULD WE ?
