- I, and several of my friends, have had great success with
- these people (it's some effort though, you have to really
- want the book/s):
-
- Books-on-File
- PO Box 195
- Union City, NJ 07087, USA
-
- The service they offer is unique as far as I am aware (and
- may have changed in detail -- the last time I dealt with
- them was several years ago): you give them as much info
- as you can on the book/s you want, at least author and
- title; publisher, place and date if available; they then
- use some method, the details of which they don't tell you,
- to find some person or business that has a copy of the book
- and is willing to sell it. They don't tell you who that is
- either (else they wouldn't make any money), but they quote you
- a price for the book, which is what the entity wanting to sell it
- wants plus their fee. If you want it, you pay them, they buy it
- and send it to you. The prices are not off-the-wall, in the
- smaller tens of US dollars for an average-type hardback novel (or
- that's what they were then).
-
- They are very good for obscure out-of-print books (for rare books
- I think you will be better off with a rare book dealer, but not
- many SF novels are rare books -- yes, I know a few that are;
- and please, if you know what the phrase `rare book' means then
- fine, but if you don't then don't followup about that, I use it
- in the sense in which it will be understood by bibliophiles).
- I've never heard of them being unable to locate a book.
-
- If anyone does contact them now I would appreciate hearing about
- your experience.
-
- And by the way:

- These two are definitely American.
