  6. Instalation:

  9. If you are using version 0.90, the name of the Preferences folder and  
  10. Preferences file has changed. You need to change the following files inside 
  11. your preferences directory:
  12. "Mosaic NetScape f" becomes "Netscape f".
  13. "Mosaic NetScape Preference" becomes "Netscape Preferences"

  16. New features since 0.90 (incomplete list)

  19. - Secure communication. Currently, there is no document describing the
  20.   security user interface. You'll notice several user interface
  21.   enhancements: security icon in the lower left corner, security color bar,
  22.   document info menu item, new pane in preferences, and a number of
  23.   warning dialogs when switching between secure and insecure modes. If
  24.   you are interested in technical details, you might want to look at the SSL
  25.    protocol RFC (http://home.mcom.com/info/SSL.html).

  27. - Fonts are customizable. You can pick a proportional and fixed fonts,
  28.   in Preferences:Styles menu.
  29.  
  30. - Persistent disk cache. Netscape will use disk to cache downloaded
  31.   files. This should reduce network traffic, and improve performance,
  32.   especially for low-bandwidth users.
  33.   By default, Netscape places its disk cache inside its 
  34.   "Netscape Preferences ─:Cache ─" folder, and uses 1 Meg of disk space.
  35.   You can customize the location and size of the cache in 
  36.   "Preferences:Directories". We suggest to increase the size of the 
  37.   cache to between 5 - 20 Meg. If you crash, cache files that are
  38.   unknown to Netscape will automatically be deleted next time you
  39.   run the application.

  41.   Additional tech  notes: Each file fetched off the network has an 
  42.   expiration date, determined by algorithms which vary with protocol. 
  43.   For HTTP, if the file in the cache has expired, Netscape will use 
  44.   "If-Modified-Since" request to fetch the document. Therefore, even
  45.   if the file is cached on the disk, you might see some network activity.
  46.   For servers, smart use of "Expires:" header will make Netscape contact
  47.   your server less often.

  49.  WARNING: persistent cache will get confused if you are running multiple
  50.  versions  of Netscape at once. The symptomis that Netscape will load
  51.  a file from the cache that does not correspond to the file on the network.

  53. - Async DNS lookup: all DNS lookups are done asynchronously, no more
  54.   hangups of your machine.
  55.  
  56. - Full ISO character set support in forms.
  57.  
  58. - Better SOCKS support: Netscape will now read socks.conf file out
  59.   of its Preferences folder.

  61. - Go to MCOM spinning icon. If you click on the spinning icon, it
  62.   will load the MCOM home page.

  64. - Support for "GetURL" Apple Event. Next release of NewsWatcher (after d19)
  65.   will be able to use Netscape as a helper application.

  68. Incomplete list of fixed bugs
  69. ====================================================================

  71. Directories menu for preferences used to crash if Finder database was
  72. corrupted. Now you will get a warning that you need to rebuild your
  73. desktop

  75. You can cut/copy/paste into all text fields.

  77. Abort of DNS lookups sometimes caused all subsequent DNS lookups to
  78. fail.

  80. Mailer reversed your name and email address.

  85. did not work, because Netscape converted carriage returns to

  98. Bugs we need more feedback on

  101. SLIP/PPP/TIA incompatibilities: Some users have reported crashes when
  102. using Netscape over PPP/SLIP/TIA. Sometimes, setting the minimum
  103. number of connections to 1 fixed this. We'd like to hear all about
  104. your problems, together with detailed description of what software
  105. are you using, and if setting the number of connections to 1 fixes
  106. the problem.

  108. Several users have reported that after using Netscape to read news,
  109. and browse, Norton Utilities would complain that newsrc and
  110. global history files have been corrupted. We have been unable to
  111. reproduce this, and would love to hear a detailed description of
  112. how to reliably reproduce this bug.

  115. Known bugs/incompatibilities

  118. "QL Fax Print"and "Fax Manager".
  119. The extension adds a fax control item in the file  menu of the 
  120. currently running app. Crashes Netscape when you click on a menu. 
  121. This might be fixed in this release.

  123. Microsoft Mail pops up a window in front of Netscape that you 
  124. cannot click on?
