maX.500 2.0 README non-UMich
This document describes the maX.500 2.0 distribution aimed at
non-University of Michigan people. If you are U-M affiliated, you
should obtain the "maX.500 2.0 UMich" distribution instead of this
one.
+ What is it?
maX.500 is an X.500 Directory client (user agent) for Macintosh.
X.500 is an international standard for online directory services,
and it is being implemented at a large number of sites across
the world. X.500 is being used initially for "white pages"
information; i.e., information about people and organizations.
maX.500 allows you to search the Directory, view entries, and
make changes (if you have permission).
maX.500 2.0 is a product of the X.500 Directory project at the
University of Michigan. It was developed by the Research
Systems Unix Group, which is part of the Information
Technology Division.
+ Getting Help with maX.500
Questions or comments about maX.500 should be sent via
electronic mail to the address: x500@umich.edu.
+ Documentation
The written documentation for maX.500 2.0 is still being
written. It should be available in July 1993. For now, this
README and the online help should hopefully be enough to help
you use the software effectively.
+ Getting Started
maX.500 2.0 requires a Macintosh Plus or newer Mac running
Apple System Software Version 6.0.5 or later (including
System 7). It also requires Apple's MacTCP control panel and
a TCP/IP network connection. If you already use applications
such as NCSA Telnet or Fetch, MacTCP is probably already
installed and properly configured. If not, ask your system
administrator or a colleague for assistance.
When you launch maX.500 (by double-clicking the "maX.500 2.0"
icon), it will try to connect to an LDAP (Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol) server. LDAP servers are specified by Internet
domain name. The default server is ldap.itd.umich.edu, which is
located at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. If
you don't have a server at your local site, encourage someone
nearby to run one. In the meantime, feel free to use the
ldap.itd.umich.edu address.
Once maX.500 has finished starting up, you can choose "maX.500
Help" from the Help menu to open the online help (this is found
on Apple menu if you are running System 6). The online help can
be printed out if you would rather study it on paper.
+ Mailing lists
There are several maX.500-related mailing lists you may be
interested in joining:
max500.announce@umich.edu - this list is where information
about new versions, availability of documentation, etc. will be
sent. To join, send a message to:
max500.announce-request@umich.edu.
max500-testers@terminator.rs.itd.umich.edu - this is a list of
beta testers. If you are interested in obtaining pre-release
versions and providing feedback to the authors, send e-mail to:
max500-testers-request@terminator.rs.itd.umich.edu.
