  1. maX.500 2.0 README non-UMich

  3. This document describes the maX.500 2.0 distribution aimed at
  4. non-University of Michigan people.  If you are U-M affiliated, you
  5. should obtain the "maX.500 2.0 UMich" distribution instead of this
  6. one.

  8. + What is it?
  9.     maX.500 is an X.500 Directory client (user agent) for Macintosh.
  10.     X.500 is an international standard for online directory services,
  11.     and it is being implemented at a large number of sites across
  12.     the world.  X.500 is being used initially for "white pages"
  13.     information; i.e., information about people and organizations.
  14.     maX.500 allows you to search the Directory, view entries, and
  15.     make changes (if you have permission).

  17.     maX.500 2.0 is a product of the X.500 Directory project at the
  18.     University of Michigan.  It was developed by the Research
  19.     Systems Unix Group, which is part of the Information
  20.     Technology Division.

  23. + Getting Help with maX.500
  24.     Questions or comments about maX.500 should be sent via
  25.     electronic mail to the address:  x500@umich.edu.

  28. + Documentation
  29.     The written documentation for maX.500 2.0 is still being
  30.     written.  It should be available in July 1993.  For now, this
  31.     README and the online help should hopefully be enough to help
  32.     you use the software effectively.

  35. + Getting Started
  36.     maX.500 2.0 requires a Macintosh Plus or newer Mac running
  37.     Apple System Software Version 6.0.5 or later (including
  38.     System 7).  It also requires Apple's MacTCP control panel and
  39.     a TCP/IP network connection.  If you already use applications
  40.     such as NCSA Telnet or Fetch, MacTCP is probably already
  41.     installed and properly configured.  If not, ask your system
  42.     administrator or a colleague for assistance.

  44.     When you launch maX.500 (by double-clicking the "maX.500 2.0"
  45.     icon), it will try to connect to an LDAP (Lightweight Directory
  46.     Access Protocol) server.  LDAP servers are specified by Internet
  47.     domain name.  The default server is ldap.itd.umich.edu, which is
  48.     located at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  If
  49.     you don't have a server at your local site, encourage someone
  50.     nearby to run one.  In the meantime, feel free to use the
  51.     ldap.itd.umich.edu address.

  53.     Once maX.500 has finished starting up, you can choose "maX.500
  54.     Help" from the Help menu to open the online help (this is found
  55.     on Apple menu if you are running System 6).  The online help can
  56.     be printed out if you would rather study it on paper.

  61.     interested in joining:

  64.     about new versions, availability of documentation, etc. will be
  65.     sent.  To join, send a message to:

  69.     beta testers.  If you are interested in obtaining pre-release
