  9.       bibtex - make    a bibliography for TeX

  12.       bibtex [aux_file_name]

  14.      DESCRIPTION
  15.       BibTeX reads the top-level auxiliary (.aux) file that    was
  16.       output during    a running of tex(1) and    creates    a bibliography
  17.       (.bbl) file that will    be incorporated    into the document on
  18.       subsequent runs.  The    aux_file_name on the command line must
  19.       be given without the .aux extension.    If you don't give the
  20.       aux_file_name, the program prompts you for it.
  21.  
  22.       BibTeX looks up, in bibliography database (.bib) files, the
  23.       entries specified by the (for    example) \cite and \nocite
  24.       commands in the source file.    It formats the information
  25.       from those entries according to instructions in a style
  26.       (.bst) file, and it outputs the results to the .bbl file.

  28.       The LaTeX manual (a.k.a.  LaTeX - A Document Preparation
  29.       System, by Leslie Lamport, published by Addison-Wesley)
  30.       explains what    a LaTeX    source file must contain to work with
  31.       BibTeX.  Appendix B of the LaTeX manual describes the    format
  32.       of the .bib files. The `BibTeXing' document by Oren
  33.       Patashnik describes extensions and details of    this format,
  34.       and it gives other useful hints for using BibTeX.

  36.       BibTeX can be    used with formats other    than LaTeX; in
  37.       particular, the eplain macros    support    BibTeX.

  39.      ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
  40.       bibtex searches the directories in the path defined by the
  41.       TEXINPUTS environment    variable for .bst files.  If TEXINPUTS
  42.       is not set, it uses the system default: ..  For .bib files,
  43.       it uses the BIBINPUTS    environment variable in    a similar way.
  44.       The default path there is: .:/usr/local/lib/tex/bib.    See
  45.       tex(1) for the details of the    searching.  If the environment
  46.       variable TEXMFOUTPUT is set, BibTeX attempts to put its
  47.       output files in it, if they cannot be    put in the current
  48.       directory.  Again, see tex(1).  No special searching is done
  49.       for the .aux file.
