The Umich Atari Archive Help File
Welcome to BART, Brode's Archive Retrieval Thang, the University of
Michigan's Atari Archive mail server. To use the server, send a message to
atari@atari.archive.umich.edu. The subject line is ignored. The body of
the message should contain, one per line, any of the following commands.
Each of the commands sends its output back to you via e-mail.
help
This command sends this file.
index
This command sends the archive's index. The index lists all
of the files in the archive with a short description where
available.
send 0ls-lR.Z
This command sends the archive's ls -lR index. This is the
raw output, with no descriptions.
path mail-address
This command tells BART where to send the requested files.
BART tries to send messages back to the address it finds in
your From: line. If that is invalid, you must use this
command to give BART a valid reply address.
send directory/filename
This command sends files from the archive. Binary files are
uuencoded before they are sent. You must issue a send command
for each file you want to receive. Use the index to find the
directory and exact file name for your request. Here is an
example of requesting the arc.ttp program from the Archivers
directory:
send Archivers/arc.ttp
To get the list of new files in the archive:
send 0new
If you miss parts of a file, rather than re-request the whole
thing, you can give BART a comma separated list of the parts
you are missing and it will send you those parts. For example:
send Languages/gcc.arc aa,ac,af
The only way to get a file larger than your quota is to
request the file by parts until you have the whole thing. A
full part is approximately 30k of data.
Note: BART does not accept wildcards such as ? or *.
sendb directory/filename
This command works just like the send command, except that
all files are uuencoded before they are sent.
The commands are not case sensitive, but the filenames are. Be careful you
are using the correct case before complaining that the server is broken.
BART enforces a quota of 1M or 10 files per 24 hour period. Your current
quota can be found in the headers of the messages that BART sends you.
Your quota is restored, in full, 24 hours after your last message to BART
is received. If you are persistent enough, your quota may never be
restored. BART does not queue requests that went over quota for later
processing, you must re-send them 24 hours later. Quotas are given in
Eastern Standard Time (-4 GMT).
If you give a valid command (path, help, index, send, sendb) that cannot
be processed, you will get an error message back. Otherwise, BART will
silently dispose of your request.
