  25. This document describes Progressive Networks' RealAudio Player.
  26. Our web site is http://www.realaudio.com. Please check it
  27. for the latest information.  For technical information and 
  28. answers to frequently asked questions, see 
  29. http://www.realaudio.com/help.html.  The software and documentation
  30. is provided to you in accordance with your license agreement.

  32. The RealAudio Player provides real time sound over the Internet.
  33. Once you have installed the RealAudio Player, RealAudio will play
  34. automatically when you select any RealAudio clip on a World Wide Web
  35. page.  You do not need to load the RealAudio player first.  The
  36. RealAudio Player only plays RealAudio files.  It does not play .au
  37. or .wav files.

  39. To use your RealAudio Player, connect to a World Wide Web site
  40. that has RealAudio. Click on a link and the RealAudio player will
  41. open and start to play. The Player first contacts the host
  42. computer that contains the audio.  It then briefly buffers
  43. some audio. If you are curious about the audio packets coming
  44. into your computer, please pull down the "View" menu
  45. and select "Statistics."

  49. Installation
  50.  
  51. There are two different RealAudio Players available for Windows:
  52.  
  53. * RealAudio Player for Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11
  54.   The installer for this player is called RA16_2B1.exe
  55.   This is a 16 bit Windows application.
  56.  
  57. * RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  58.   The installer for this player is called ra32_2b1.exe
  59.   This is a 32 bit Windows application.  It requires a
  60.   32 bit winsock.

  62. To install, execute the installer under Windows.
  63. If you want to control where and how RealAudio is installed,
  64. use Custom Setup.  The default installation location is
  65. C:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  66.  
  67. The RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  68. consists of the following files:
  69.  
  70. In C:\RAPLAYER (or the directory specified under Custom Setup):
  71. RAPLAYER.EXE, RATASK.EXE, RAPLAYER.HLP, README.TXT,
  72. START.RAM, COMPLETE.RA, THANKYOU.RA

  75. RA32.DLL, RA3228_8.DLL

  77. If you installed the RealAudio Plug-In, then in the
  78. plugins directory:

  93. System Requirements
  94.  
  95. To play RealAudio files, your system must meet
  96. the following requirements:
  97.  
  98.    * 486/33 SX or better PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  99.      Windows NT or Windows 95
  100.  
  101.    * 8 megabytes RAM.
  102.  
  103.    * 2 megabytes free disk space.
  104.  
  105.    * A sound card with a Windows Sound driver.
  106.      (The RealAudio Player is not compatible with the
  107.      PC Speaker program or other software programs which
  108.      simulate a sound card.)
  109.  
  110.    * An Internet Connection. Either a direct connection
  111.      or a 14.4K Baud or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  112.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.
  113.  
  114.    * RealAudio for Windows 95 or Windows NT requires a
  115.      32 bit winsock.
  116.  
  117. RealAudio now offers 28.8 content.  To listen to
  118. RealAudio 28.8, you need:
  119.  
  120.    * 486/66 DX or better running Microsoft Windows 95,
  121.      or Windows NT.  If you are running Windows 3.1X,
  122.      you will need a Pentium class machine.
  123.  
  124.    * An Internet Connection.  Either a direct connection
  125.      or a 28.8K Baud or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  126.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.

  128. RealAudio for Windows 95 and Windows NT provides a Netscape
  129. Plug-in.  To use the Plug-in requires Netscape 2.b2 or later.

  133. New Features
  134.  
  135.  * RealAudio 28.8 - RealAudio 28.8 is a new algorithm that provides
  136.    enhanced sound quality to all people who have a 28.8 baud modem
  137.    or better connection to the Internet. This near-FM (mono) sound
  138.    quality greatly enhances the clarity of music and voice delivered
  139.    in real time over the Internet. 
  140.  
  141.   * Plug-in - The new RealAudio Plug-in for Netscape Navigator allows
  142.     content creators to seemlessly integrate RealAudio directly
  143.     into their Web page layouts.  Plug-in's are supported by
  144.     Netscape Navigator 2.0b2 or later.  Plug-in's are only available
  145.     with the RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT.  The
  146.     Windows 3.1X RealAudio Player does not support Plug-ins.

  151. Accessing RealAudio through Firewalls
  152.  
  153. RealAudio uses port 7070 for TCP and ports 6970 through 7170
  154. inclusive for UDP transmission. If you are accessing RealAudio
  155. through a firewall, your firewall administrator will need to
  156. authorize these ports. You can point your administrator to our
  157. firewall page, http://www.realaudio.com/firewall.html for details.

  172. Sound Quality
  173.  
  174. Audio is transmitted to the RealAudio player in the RealAudio
  175. format.  The player then by default produces 16 bit
  176. 8 Kilohertz sound. If you hear garbled audio then you can change
  177. the kind of sound the RealAudio player produces.  To change the
  178. kind of sound produced, please pull down the "View" menu and
  179. choose "Options". Select "Advanced" and you will see toggle boxes
  180. for "use 8 bit" and "use 11 Khz":
  181.  
  182.    * 16 bit  8 Kilohertz (default)
  183.    *  8 bit  8 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit)
  184.    * 16 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 11 Khz)
  185.    *  8 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit and use 11 Khz)

  187. If you receive poor quality audio, please see our 
  188. FAQ entry on audio quality by going to 
  189. http://www.realaudio.com/help.html and choose FAQ.  From there,
  190. select the "Audio Quality" entry.

  192. Please note that to receive RealAudio 28.8 you must have at least
  193. a 19.2KBaud connection to your Internet Service Provider.

  197. The Internet Adapter (TIA)
  198.  
  199. The RealAudio Player does not currently work with TIA.
  200. TIA does not transmit UDP packets to client connections.  If
  201. you connect using TIA you will receive everything but the audio.
  202. A TIA version that supports UDP is expected in the near future.

  206. Known Problems
  207.  
  208.    * Having large applications open may prevent the RealAudio
  209.      installer from executing.  If this happens, please close
  210.      all other applications and then install.
  211.  
  212.    * Starting or quitting large applications while playing
  213.      RealAudio can cause some brief disruption of the playback.
  214.  
  215.    * Playback on some 486/25 SX computers does not work properly.
  216.  
  217.    * The user interface during playback of 28.8 content on slower
  218.      systems may have slow response time.  Performance of other
  219.      applications may suffer during playback.

  223. Browser Upgrade
  224.  
  225. After you upgrade your browser, you may lose the configuration 
  226. information for the RealAudio player. The easiest way to 
  227. re-configure your browser is to re-install the player.
  228. Alternatively, you can manually configure your browser:

  230.    * Viewer name: c:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  231.    * Mime Type: audio
  232.    * Mime Subtype: x-pn-realaudio

  238. Audible Defects
  239.  
  240. There are occasional audible defects that are evident when
  241. playing audio clips. To help our continuous quality improvement
  242. plans, we would appreciate it if you could submit a problem
  243. report telling us which clip and where in the clip the defect is.

  249. In the event that RealAudio Setup was unable to find a Web Browser,
  250. please check our on-line help information for detailed instructions on
