PURPOSE OF NETFILES
-------------------
This feature on RCIS permits viewing of lists of
downloadable files available on other systems throughout the RCIS
Network. It is of extreme value to users who are looking for
specific files.
Once you have found a file that you wish to obtain, you can
either call the remote system direct or request the file to be
sent to your local system.
REQUESTING FILES
----------------
In order to request a file, you must have enough credit in
your account to cover the cost of the long distance charges
incurred by the systems to get your file to you. After
requesting a file, the file request is addressed to the system
that contains the file. The file request will travel through the
network until it reaches its destination. On receipt of the file
request, the system will place the file in email, and address it
to you.
The file will travel through the network until it reaches
its destination, where it will sit in Email waiting for the you.
On your next login, you will have to first pay the transfer charges
from your account; then, you will be able to download the file.
After downloading, you may choose to transfer the file to a
download section on your local system, for others to download.
This can be done with the (T)ransfer option on the e-mail menu.
If you choose to do this, you will be awarded download credits
just as if you had uploaded the file directly.
The whole process from requesting the file until actual
receipt of the file can take anywhere from a couple days to over
a week. The time it takes depends upon how often the systems
involved transfer messages.
COST EFFECTIVENESS
------------------
For small to medium size files, requesting files can save
money, since you don't have to spend the time logging onto the
remote BBS, and work your way through the menus to get your file.
Also, more time can be spent due to bad file transfers.
For large files, requesting files can be expensive, since
some files have to travel several systems, and each system
incurs costs along the way. In this case, it might be best to
just call up the remote system direct, and download the file.
ACCOUNTS
--------
Accounts can be opened by sending your SysOp a check or
money order for the amount that you wish your account to be
credited. The amount you send in should be at least $5, and
accounts are non-refundable. The BBS address follows:
RCIS HQ
470 Hughes Road
New Milford, NJ 07646
Please make checks payable to Steven Rottinger.
