Gnuchess v. 4.0 for OSK
This is gnuchess version 4.0 patchlevel 62 adapted for the OSK computers.
Unpack the archive in the root (/h0) directory. The directory GNUCHESS4.0
will be created. The executables are in the SRC subdirectory. You may want to
move them elsewhere. Also, to save the disk space, you may remove (archive)
the sources and the entire DOC subdirectory. However, you will need the files
in /h0/GNUCHESS4.0/MISC to play. If you want to have them elsewhere you will
have to recompile everything after changing the variable LIBDIR in the
Makefile.
For users with access to postscript printers I have translated the nroff
manuals to postscript (they are in DOC directory).
To reduce the space taken by this package I have removed the file
/h0/GNUCHESS4.0/MISC/gnuchess.bk1. It is used to generate the new "bookfile"
containing the common openings. This has already been done - the bookfile is
called "gnuchess.data". The uncompressed gnuchess.bk1 file takes 2.7 MBytes
and, if needed, can be obtained with the original source of gnuchess from
prep.mit.edu by anonymous FTP.
KNOWN BUG
The program gnuchessn which has been compiled with TOP ncurses does not
display reverse video. Instead, the high bit of each character to be displayed
in reverse video is set. This is the internal ncurses flag for reverse video.
I do not know yet why it is not properly interpreted. Instead, the program
"gnuchess" can be used (using also ncurses but without reverse video) or
possibly a special font can be created.
