BULLETIN BOARD
OS-9 INTERNATIONAL
The first issue of this magazine has articles (mostly in German) on :
1) The Europaeisches Forum Fuer OS-9 and the contents of the EFFO #20
set of floppies.
2) How to access the swiss FTP site and a list of worldwide FTP, mailbox
and BBS sites for OS-9.
3) Simple articles on how to write drivers ("Ein OS-9 Geraete-Treiber")
and how to handle exceptions ("Erkennen von Exceptions").
4) A description of the "Software Management System" software from
Intasoft Ltd, UK.
OPEN BUS SYSTEMS '92 in Research and Industry : this conference, organised
by CERN, ESONE, ETH, PSI, SAP and VITA will be held in the Swiss Institute
of Technology, ETH, Zurich Switzerland on October 13-14-15. Among the
many talks will be one by Peter Dibble on the multiprocessor OS-9000
('Hydra'). For more information contact Chris Eck, Chris Parkman or myself.

LICENCED SOFTWARE
VISIT TO MICROWARE FRANCE
The highlights of this visit were the presentation of Microware's product
plans for the near future by Ken Kaplan and a demonstration of the new
C compiler by Andy Crane.
1) C Compiler: Planned for late summer (68K Version), rapidly followed
by the 386 version and then other OS-9000 targets such as MIPS and
SPARC.
It is a full ANSI compiler with a backwards compatibility switch. There
are 3 selectable interfaces - the present cc, a full version which
allows detailed selection of features such as optimisation techniques
and a POSIX compatible version.
It is accompanied by a new debugger and source-level debugger. The
various UNIBRIDGE ports will follow.
Large improvements in compile/link speed and execution times were
shown on the demonstration system. The former due to the new linker
which uses an index rather than a sequential search and the latter
due to the optimisation techniques. The new linker can, optionally,
handle old libraries but I would like to test this out when the
production compiler arrives.
A C++ front-end is a possible next stage (depends on demand).
2) ISP 1.4 : Planned for late summer. It is faster, has a better
real-time response (due to improved priority organisation) and
has several extra drivers for new hardware implementations.
3) KERNEL IMPROVEMENTS : Planned for end 92. Performance can be enhanced
by some minor changes and also by having the possibility to have a
reduced function smaller kernel (which will cost less on price
critical systems). Examples given were : single-colour memory,
simpler scheduler, optionally saving fewer registers...
4) XHOST : Planned 93. This will be an X-based graphic menu system to
replace UNIBRIDGE.
5) HYDRA : Planned 93. This is the name for their multiprocessor system.
It will support tightly, or loosely coupled heterogeneous OS-9000
systems.
6) POSIX : will follow 1003.1 and 1003.4 (when finalised) for OS-9000.
7) NFS : no new release is planned.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
RSHD (Remote SHell Daemon) : Antonio Saravia has written this unix daemon
which allows OS-9 (non-interactive) programs to be run from any system
with the Remote Shell (RSH) utility.
See : RSHD (on SUNSOFT)
SHARED LIBARIES : Patrick Elcombe has extended my and Laurent Guglielmi's
work on subroutine modules to allow initialised data within such modules.
The data may be any mixture of absolute, code-relative or data-relative.
See : AA_ASCII/DOC/SUBPACK/init_data.doc on SUNSOFT
OPAL'S BUFFER MANAGER AND DAQ SKELETON : Patrick Elcombe has informed me
that this OPAL software can be found on :
vxcern::disk$opal:[os9dev.daq92...]
This software is all fairly stable, well debugged code by now.
Patrick is now converting it to be portable - he already has a portable
buffer manager that runs on OS9, VMS POSIX, SUN, Apollo, any system that
supports VOS etc. - this may also be useful to other people and he hopes
to get something about it in an ONLINE newsletter.

'Pipelines', Microware, Spring 92
This issue has articles on :
1) OS-9000 1.3 for 386. This has many improvements and additions e.g
a) a graphical menu-driven system for installation
b) DOS emulation
2) Applications : underwater vehicles, testing astronauts orientation
capabilities, ESRF control system and an OS-9000 PC based process
control and monitoring system.
3) Announcement of software support of MIDI ("Musical Instrument Digital
Interface") and CD+G ( low bandwidth graphics embedded in standard
music discs ).
4) How to fine-tune signal handling using some undocumented features
of OS-9.
5) Third-Party software and hardware offerings - I mention the disk

INTRODUCTION FOR NEW PEOPLE ON THE MAILING LIST
Software and documentation is held on SUNSOFT. You may ftp from this
computer (from within CERN) using PUBLIC password:OS9_public.
+------------------------------------------------------------+
All files in PUBLIC/AA_ASCII should be transferred in ASCII
All other files should be transferred in BINARY
Filenames ending in .prg should be renamed without the .prg
and set as executable (attr -epe)
+------------------------------------------------------------+
A general catalogue of OS-9 software, contacts etc can be found in the
file : PUBLIC/AA_ASCII/catalogue
Previous mail-shots, with names such as info_0688 etc, can be found in
the directory : PUBLIC/AA_ASCII/MAIL_SHOTS.
There are other files of interest and much public domain software see :
PUBLIC/AA_ASCII/READ.ME and PUBLIC/AA_ASCII/ls_lR
You may also bring floppy(s) to the OS-9 Demonstration room (31 1-012)
and take copies.
Various documents about OS-9 are held in the OS-9 demonstration
room (31 1-012). The key to this room is with Douglas Kemp (31 1-011).
This room also has OS-9 demonstration systems with OS-9 software
products (from Microware and others) available for trial use. When
you want have a demo of a software item give me a ring :
