LICENCED SOFTWARE
68040 : I have received the OS-9 2.4 Industrial and Professional Licence
distributions. They are available at 210sf and 550sf respectively (same
price as 68030). Hans von der Schmitt has been using the 68040 in the OPAL
experiment since the start of the LEP run. His enthusiastic comments can
be found in the latest edition of :
"Mini-Micro Computer News-Letter"
Contact Anne Perrelle (perrelle@cernvm) if you want to be added to the
MMCNL distribution list.
X11 : Antonio Pastore tested the Microware implementation of the X11 client.
It worked fine. I would like to hear from people who envisage moving from
the in-house version of X11 to this microware product.
Contact : kemp@cernvax.cern.ch
NFS 1.1 : We received a beta release of this product and it has been tested
in OPAL. They found that this was very much better than the first release
in terms of stability and speed. The main release is scheduled for June.
UNIBRIDGE ON DECSTATIONS : We have just received the MIPS port of this
product from Dr. Keil Gmbh. It is installed on our DECstation. It runs
well (except for the warning messages generated by the ULTRIX kernel
caused by misaligned data). Users who would like to try this product should
contact Antonio Pastore (antoniop@cernvax).

PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
YTAR : Antonio Pastore reports that a new version of the Ytar program is
available. This new version, labelled 9.0, corrects most of the problems
of the previous ones, and adds 2 new options: "-U" and '-z". The first
option prevents the translation of text files during restore operations
(i.e.: ASCII 10 <--> ASCII 13 ), while the second option is similar to
the usual OS-9 counterpart, and allows the specification of file names
either from standard input or from a file. As usual the Ytar OS-9
executable is in :
/usr/local/os9/Tools/Tar/ytar.os9
while the Ultrix version is on-line.
For additional information contact antoniop@cernvax.cern.ch.

ERROR REPORTS
Date : 1991-May-13
Problem : (CES) : incorrect use of bits for PD_PAR in SCF descriptors
Source : Sigurd Guenther
Description : The bits for adjusting stop bits and character length
are not correctly used by OS-9 SCF-drivers from CES
(version 2.3).
Changing control bits 4 and 5 of the PD_PAR field of
SCF devices change character length instead of stop
bits (which should be modified by bits 2 and 3) and
vice versa.
Remedy : use bits 2 and 3 for stop bits and
bits 4 and 5 for character length.

OTHER DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
Papers
'The OS-9 Device Stub Controller Startup',
A. Bland & F. Ghinet, Apr 91
They show how the BOOTP protocol (and TFTP) is used to boot discless
systems and also consider the use of NFS. The full list of the modules
included in their systems is appended.
'OS-9 Operating System Building for the CERN Host Interface (CHI)',
C.R. van der Vlugt, May 91
This Fastbus module is equipped with a 68030, Ethernet etc. The paper
describes how the Eprom is constructed and how the startup is organised
so that the Internet Number can be changed from module to module while
retaining the same Eprom.
Commercial - House Magazines
'The Handshake', Spectralab (Eltec).
This month's issue deals with their tower-cased 68030/68040 systems,
graphics boards, the OSF/Motif user interface and a data-evaluation/
presentation package.
Commercial - Catalogues
'Microsys-VME', Microsys 91
The company has a wide range of boards including a (50Mhz?) 68040, with
SCSI, upto 64MB and the possibility of an Ethernet Piggy-Back. They also
sell a range of VME half-height boards.

INTRODUCTION FOR NEW PEOPLE ON THE MAILING LIST
A general catalogue of OS-9 software, contacts etc can be found in the
file (on CERNVAX) :
/userb/kemp/os9/CATALOGUE
or the same file on VXCERN :
VXCERN::DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9.CATALOGUE]
Previous mail-shots can be found in the directory (on CERNVAX) :
/userb/kemp/os9/mail-shots
with names such as info-0688 etc. They are also kept in the
Notes-file OS9 on VXCERN.
There are other files of interest in the os9 directory, see :
/userb/kemp/os9/READ.ME
Files on CERNVAX can be accessed from VAX VMS systems using e.g.
priam::"/userb/kemp/os9/mail-shots/info-0688"
Much public domain software can be found in the various directories
in : VXCERN::DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9.PUBLIC]
[Note VMS files can be accessed from CERNVAX using the commands dls, dcp,
dcat e.g. DCP VXCRNA::'DISK$CG:[PRIAMOS9]ERRORS.TXT' X.TXT
Binary files have been converted to S1 format and should be converted
back into binary using the OS-9 utility EXBIN.
You may also bring floppy(s) to the OS-9 Demonstration room (31 1-012)
and take copies.
Various documents about OS-9 are held in the OS-9 demonstration
room (31 1-012). The key to this room is with Douglas Kemp (31 1-011).
This room also has OS-9 demonstration systems with OS-9 software
products (from Microware and others) available for trial use. When
you want have a demo of a software item give me a ring :
