  6. Version 2.05 of the Lout document formatting system is now available
  7. (free of charge).  The system reads a high-level description of a
  8. document similar in style to LaTeX and produces a PostScript file which
  9. can be printed on many laser printers and graphic display devices.

  11. Lout offers an unprecedented range of advanced features, including
  12. optimal paragraph breaking, automatic hyphenation, PostScript EPS file
  13. inclusion, equation formatting, tables, diagrams, rotation and scaling,
  14. sorted indexes, bibliographic databases, running headers and odd-even
  15. pages, automatic cross referencing, and much more, all ready to go.
  16. Furthermore, Lout is easily extended with definitions which are very
  17. much easier to write than troff of TeX macros because Lout is a
  18. high-level language, the outcome of an eight-year research project that
  19. went back to the beginning.

  21. New features just introduced in Version 2.05 include full support for the
  22. ISO-LATIN-1 character set and arbitrary PostScript encoding vectors, small
  23. changes to the DocumentLayout package to simplify porting it to non-English
  24. languages, source code which compiles cleanly on type-fussy compilers and
  25. at least one 64-bit architecture (the DEC Alpha) but is not yet ANSI, and
  26. a few small enhancements and bug fixes.

  28. Lout is written in C, is highly portable to Unix systems, and produces
  29. PostScript output (used by many laser printers).  It is distributed under
  30. the GNU public licence as a compressed tar file called lout.2.05.tar.Z
  31. in the "jeff" subdirectory of the home directory you land in when running
  32. "ftp ftp.cs.su.oz.au" with login name "ftp" or "anonymous" (enter any
  33. non-empty password).  The comp.sources.misc newsgroup is an alternative
  34. source of Lout distributions.  The distribution contains
